How To Make A Minecraft Server For Free (Guide) | Create A Minecraft Server [2022]

It is great you can get your own private server for playing Minecraft without spending any extra bucks. Online services like Aternos and Minehut are inclusive of some limitations though. First of all, there’s a cap on the number of players that can join the game. You also get limited memory, which might not be enough if you’re planning to establish a full-fledged community server.

Apart from private servers, you also have the choice to join realms, play on a public server, or start a new single-player world in Minecraft.

Which Service Providers Are The Best For Minecraft Servers

If youve decided to go with the purchasing option and buy a Minecraft multiplayer world service from a reputable provider, then there are many options you can pick from. Its best to stick with the major, reputable ones because these are the companies that you can actually trust to provide you a consistent, powerful, and high-quality service!

Depending on your requirements and budget, which business you decide to go with will vary. Here are three of our favorite options that are well worth considering:

  • MonoVM
  • Believe it or not, our own company , offers not only Dedicated and VPS servers but can offer Minecraft Servers as well, upon request. In fact, we have widened our services to include Minecraft servers and all-inclusive setups at extremely affordable prices. Its really easy to get started and done properly you can get your multiplayer Minecraft world off the ground and up and running for people to join it in an afternoon!

  • 1GBITS
  • Did you know that you can get your own Minecraft server on the internet up and running extremely quickly and effectively at a price just for a few dollars per month? Its true, and 1GBits is the company that youll want to get this insane service. Their server computers are extremely powerful, and they have very helpful guides for going through the process, which we highly recommend you to use.

Minecraft Server: Own Home Server Or Rent A Server

If you want to create and run your own Minecraft server, you will first need the appropriate hardware. In theory, a home PC is adequate for this but this also depends on the desired number of players and server setting. For three to five players, for example, the Minecraft team recommends three gigabytes of RAM, 18 gigabytes of hard drive space, and broadband resources of at least 12 MBit for the game. In addition, there are the requirements of the operating system for Windows 10, this would be another one or two gigabytes of RAM and 16 or 32 gigabytes of hard drive space .

These key numbers already make it clear that you cannot run other programs in parallel to the Minecraft server on the respective PC, so it functions exclusively as a host. The purchase of a second PC in addition to your normal device not only takes up the home broadband quota, but also means additional running costs in terms of power consumption. It is probably only an option for very few Minecraft enthusiasts.

What actually is a server? In our article on the term Server we answer this, and many more questions, addressing, among other things, the ambiguous use of the term in computer science!

Rentable server resources are also referred to as Infrastructure-as-a-Service , which is IT infrastructure provided to users by a provider as part of a service.

How To Host A Minecraft Server For Free

The process of creating and setting up a free Minecraft server is almost the same as for the paid version.

First, you have to find a free hosting provider that will allow you to host your data on its hardware. This isnât exactly easy, as not many people like sharing their property with others for free.

Moreover, youâll be forced to use a non-official Minecraft server application created by a third party. The same goes for the game client, since the original game isnât free and thereâs no way to override this.

If youâre ok with all of the above, you just need to download the Bukkit-server and launch it via the Forge Minecraft server app on your free hosting. The method is identical to the one we explained above for the non-free options.

Start A Free Minecraft Server With Aternos

Aternos is another free platform that offers private Minecraft servers to players. Just like Minehut, setting up a server with Aternos is a breeze. All you have to do is create a free account, add a server, and configure it up to your liking.

To get started, first visit aternos.org. Then click on the Play button located in the bottom-right corner.

Here, you can sign up for a free account or log in to an existing one. You can also sign in using your Google account if you want. Note that specifying an email address is optional, and you can create your account using just a username and password.

Once you have logged in to your account, click on the Create a server button.

Next, specify the server name and the description. You can also choose between Java Edition and Bedrock/Pocket Edition here. Note that, unlike Minehut, Aternos doesn’t support cross-platform play and you’ll have to create separate servers for both editions. Click on the Create button to continue.

On the server dashboard, you’ll have the option to start your server. To manage your server, select an option from the left sidebar. You can switch between Bedrock and Java editions by switching to the Software tab.

Likewise, the Console and File options allow players to access the console and file manager respectively. You can generate new worlds or backup your existing world using the Worlds and Backups option.

    Create A Windows Batch File

This is where things start to get a little more complicated.

You will need to create a Windows Batch File to launch your Minecraft server and have it running as smoothly as possible.

To do this, head into the folder where you have stored the “server.jar” file and then create a new text document. The latter will eventually become your Windows Batch File, but don’t worry about that just yet.

Name the new text document something easily recognizable, like “run.txt” or “server_start.txt” and then open it.

In this text document, you will need to copy and paste the following command:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar nogui

If you are interested in what each of those bits mean, we have broken it down for you in a glossary below. Otherwise, if you’re eager to keep moving, just save the text document and skip ahead to Step 5.

    • Java: This just means that you are using a Java server.
    • Xms1024M -Xmx1024M: This is how many megabytes of RAM you want to allocate to the server. You can tweak this number if you want
    • Jar: The server file you downloaded is a jar file
    • Server.jar: This is the name of the server file that you previously downloaded. It is important to make sure that this bit is right, otherwise the command will not work. So just double check that your server file is indeed called the same thing.
    • Nogui: This disables the Minecraft Graphical User Interface meaning that the server can only be interacted with from your terminal.

    Operating Systems And Other Software

How To Make A Minecraft Server in 2021

To be able to create your own Minecraft server, youll need the Minecraft server software. The developer Mojang provides you with a free setup for this, which is only compatible with Minecraft: Java Edition. A current version of the Java Runtime Environment is also required.

Secondly, you will need an operating system to manage your server resources and install the Minecraft server software. In connection with the local home server, it has already been hinted that you can certainly get your own Minecraft world running on the standard user operating systems from Microsoft, such as Windows 10 or Windows 8. Installation on macOS is also possible, according to developer information. For an optimal setup, however, the classic server operating systems are recommended:

    • Windows Server 2019
    • Ubuntu
    • openSUSE

It is required that you are able to use Java via the command line. On macOS and Linux, this should be set up by default. In Windows, you often need to enable the option first via enable PATH environment variable.

Everything Else You Need To Know About Creating A Minecraft Server

There are a few things to know before you run off to create your own persistent online world.

If you want to customize your world, the text file server properties in the Minecraft Server folder can be tweaked to your liking.

If you plan on having friends from outside the house join your server, the code theyll need is your IPv4 plus some extra digits.

To find your IPv4 number, just search what is my IPv4 number? on Google. Each IPv4 number is specific to each computer, so ours will be different to yours.

You should get something like 100.20.511.329 .

Take your IPv4 and add a colon followed by 25565 so you end with something that looks like the following:

    100.20.511.329:25565

Your version of the above number is your server address other players will need to enter when joining.

Finally, to allow other players to join you need to forward your router ports to allow access from other parties. YouTuber Voizdev has a great explanation and walkthrough on this should you find yourself a little confused.
