Since they’re not built like conventional helmets, players will need to do some breeding of turtles in order to make a turtle shell for their armor loadout. In addition to their armor usage, turtle shells can be used to brew the Potion of the Turtle Master. When equipped, turtle shells also provide an extra ten seconds of Water Breathing, allowing longer dives into oceans, lakes, and rivers.

To make turtle shells, players will need a material known as scute.

Why Cant I Breed Turtles In Minecraft

So, youve rounded up two or more turtles and successfully had them mate, but one of the turtles keeps trying to run away, and neither of the mated ones actually lay the eggs. As explained earlier, a turtle wont lay eggs unless its on her own home beach. Time wont help here, either. So, if you want to create a turtle farm, you need to make sure that its on a beach. Also, you shouldnt go around trying to find turtles on different beaches look to the local ones.

The good thing about this is that youll end up with a turtle farm with everything you need in its proximity Sea Turtles and Seagrass.

Add Items To Make A Turtle Shell

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make a turtle shell, place 5 scutes in the 3×3 crafting grid.

When making a turtle shell, it is important that the scutes are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. There should be 3 scutes in the first row and 2 scutes in the second row on either side . This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a turtle shell.

How To Scute A Turtle

Scutes are dropped from baby turtles when the baby grows into a full adult. Players can either wait for the turtle to grow into a full adult, which takes around 20 minutes in real time, or a whole day in Minecraft world time, or players can speed up the process.

Players can cause a baby turtle to age much faster by feeding it seagrass. Seagrass is found all over Minecraft’s underwater biomes, in both tall and short forms. Players can feed this to baby turtles to help them age much faster.

Once the turtle is aged to a full adult, the turtle will drop one scute that players can place in their inventory.

A fun fact about baby turtles: at 0.12 blocks, they are the smallest mob in Minecraft. This is just another cute reason to have the Sea Turtle mobs mate.

Add The Scutes To Make A Turtle Helmet

In the crafting table, add the scutes to the grid.

You must add the scutes to the grid exactly as shown in the image below. Simply place down 3 scutes in the 1st row and 2 scutes in the 2nd row . This is the Minecraft turtle shell recipe.

After you’ve added the items to the crafting grid as described above, you’ll notice a turtle shell in the box on the right.

How To Get Scutes In Minecraft

Like I have mentioned above, Scutes are obtained when a Turtle grows from its child form to its Adult form. So to obtain it, you will need to first find two Turtles. You will be able to find them on Sandy Beach Shorelines. Once you are there, you will need to feed the Turtles Sea Grass. Its a common plant found at the ocean beds, lake beds, and river beds. Once you feed them, the normal breeding process of animals will begin. After breeding, one of the Turtle will lay eggs on the Sand Blocks. Once the eggs hatch, you will get a baby Turtle out of it. How To Craft The Turtle Shell In Minecraft

First things first, players must grab some shears and begin cutting down sea grass found growing on the sea floor. Sea grass are turtles’ favorite snacks, and as such, will begin breeding when two are fed this oceanic item. Once turtles mate, the female’s belly will grow larger as she begins searching for a suitable spot on the beach to lay her eggs. Turtles will always search for the chunk that they spawned into to lay their eggs.

Once in their spawn chunk, the pregnant turtle will lay up to four eggs, and it’s now up to the player to protect those eggs. Come night time, zombies, husks, and drowned alike will all attempt to trample and destroy the eggs. To stop this from happening, construct a house around these eggs, or, use a silk touch pickaxe to move the eggs to a safer location. Turtle eggs take multiple day cycles in order to fully grow and hatch, and will grow faster during the night.

Once the baby turtles hatch, players can use 10 sea grass to increase their growth, and once fully grown, turtles will drop a scute. Repeat this process with four more turtles until the player has a total of five scutes.

Place the scutes in a three by three crafting grid as if to make a helmet, and receive the turtle shell item.

In order to get scute in a sizable number, players will want to breed a significant number of turtles.

Found in beach biomes, Minecraft’s turtles alternate between their home beaches and oceans. When fed seagrass, which is commonly found growing in ocean biomes, turtles enter breeding mode and find a mate. After mating, the turtles return to their home beach and lay eggs with a maximum of four eggs each time. After cracking thrice, the eggs will hatch and spawn baby turtles.

Baby turtles are incredibly small and vulnerable, and players aiming to get scute should speed the process. Fortunately, by using seagrass, baby turtles’ aging can be sped up. Once grown into a full adult, a baby turtle will drop one scute piece. Five scute pieces will be needed to craft one turtle shell, so the more turtles players breed and raise, the more capable they will be at crafting turtle shells efficiently.

How Do You Count Scutes

The rings within the scutes will usually alternate between wider rings of one color and narrower rings of another color. In theory, the wider ring represents a period of good eating, typically the warm season. On the other hand, the narrower ring represents a period of scarcity, often in the winter.

Uses For Turtle Shells

The Turtle Shell in Minecraft can be equipped in the Helmet slot and provides the players with 2 armor points, which is similar to an Iron Helmet.

Players will also get Water Breathing Status effect for 10 seconds. This gives the players 10 extra seconds underwater.

They also have more durability than Iron and chainmail helmets!

Then, craft a surplus of wooden shovels and enchant them with lapis lazuli, cycling through until Silk Touch appears. Switch the shovel with the pickaxe that will be used to pick up the turtle eggs.

Once the eggs have been collected, take them to a preferred location with sand and water. Remember to fortify the area from monsters. Turtle eggs will generally hatch within 4-5 nights. After the babies are born, they will make their way towards nearby water. After a hatchling becomes an adult, it will drop scute. Players can speed up a turtle’s growing process by feeding it seagrass. After collecting enough scute, Minecraft players can craft a Turtle Shell, a helmet inherently enchanted with Water Breathing, allowing players to breathe underwater for ten seconds. Additionally, players can use the Turtle Shell at a brewing stand to make Potion of the Turtle Master. This tonic reduces damage taken but decreases movement speed for a brief duration.
