Sponges Extended! for 1.3.1 Minecraft Mod

Sponges are used for absorbing water, just like in reality. However, sponges in Minecraft are a little different. As most players know, the world of Minecraft is composed of blocks: both solid and non-solid blocks. Water and air are no different. A sponges purpose is to absorb water when it comes into contact with a water block next to it. This will then turn the water block into an air block.

Once a sponge has done its purpose, it will immediately turn into a wet sponge and not absorb any more water. A sponge can only absorb water blocks up to 7 blocks away in all directions. Taking note of this fact will help with strategically placing sponges inside water-filled rooms and areas.

Where Does Sponge Spawn In Minecraft

Sponges spawn in ocean biomes, never above land, always in water. They will attack the player, but if looked at they will run away as long as the crosshair is on them, until they are attacked themselves. Sponges do not split like other slime mobs, so once one is killed, it will not spawn any smaller Sponges.

How To Get Sponges

Sponges in Minecraft can be found under water in Ocean Monuments, which can be tricky to find regardless. Once players find an Ocean Monument, however, they can then go about getting sponges. There are two ways to acquire them. The first, and perhaps worst, way of going about getting sponges is to defeat Elder Guardians. Elder Guardians can be found in Ocean Monuments and will drop one wet sponge when they die. For that reason, farming them isn’t as useful as other Minecraft resources, like finding sponges naturally within the monuments themselves.

Indeed, the better way to get sponges is to find sponge rooms inside Ocean Monuments. These rooms allow players much greater access to sponges than Elder Guardians do. They are also less dangerous than killing Minecraft enemies and will yield more sponges. For those reasons, getting sponges from natural sponge rooms is definitely the best way for players to gather sponges in survival mode.

Overall, sponges don’t impact Minecraft much though they can be helpful for dedicated players. While getting them seems simple, it isn’t necessarily easy. Players should keep themselves secure when hunting for sponges and remember that the monsters of Minecraft can be shockingly dangerous.

Minecraft is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

How To Dry A Sponge

Since wet Sponges cannot absorb water, you will need to dry them out before being able to use them again. This can be done in a couple of ways. Firstly, you can cook a wet Sponge in a Furnace to dry it out. This process works the same as if you were making food in that you put the wet Sponge on the top slot of a Furnace and then some fuel on the bottom slot. The dried Sponge will appear on the right slot after the white progress arrow has filled up.

Although, if you want a way to dry Sponges without using resources for fuel, you can instantly dry out a Sponge in the Nether. Any wet Sponged placed in the Nether will immediately dry out, however, this means that you will need a Nether Portal.

Furthermore, there is a way that you can dry Sponges that is exclusive to the Bedrock Edition of the game. If you place a wet Sponge in a dry biome , it will dry out by itself after a few minutes.

Surviving In An Ocean Monument

In practice, the first problem is going to be not to die 50 times while exploring the temple.Whether by drowning or by mobs, death quickly occurs.

Dont drown

To avoid drowning, the best solution Ive found is to take a few torches in your action bar.By placing them against a wall this will give you the ability to breathe and raise your oxygen bar. This goes down very quickly, think about always having an eye on them.

You can also consider aquatic breathing potions, but their effect will disappear with each bucket of milk you drink .

Dont die

Then youre going to have to fight two types of problems with mobs:

  • The damage: as with any mob, youll take damage. But given the number of guards in the ocean monument, it can go very fast. Consider planning golden apples or regeneration potions to find life if necessary.
  • The effect of fatigue: the ancient guardians will give you an effect of fatigue as soon as you enter the temple. This effect being rather long , it will completely prevent you from doing anything. Plan buckets of milk to make it pass the time to break blocks.

Ideal inventory

I dont know if its the ideal inventory, but its certainly the one Im trying to get before I venture into an ocean monument:

If you have any other stuff ideas to add, tell me in the comment, Ill add later.

Attack plan

Once youve prepared all this, its time to take action.

How Much Water Sponges Soak Up

When a Sponge is placed in water, it will absorb all water up to 7 blocks away from its placed location. This means that all 6 directions around a Sponge will be cleared of water almost instantly. This allows you to create an octahedron air pocket in any body of water. However, keep in mind that there is a limit to how much water a Sponge can soak up. To be exact, every 1 Sponge can absorb up to 135 blocks of water total before it becomes oversaturated.

You should also keep in mind that water can flow through a space created by a Sponge. For example, if you place a dry Sponge at the bottom of an Ocean biome, it will soak up water in its usual range, however, water from above will flow down to refill that air pocket with water. As such, if youre planning to make a path leading to an underwater location, youll have to start from the surface and soak up the water as you travel downward.
