How To Make A ‘minecraft’ Server

If you just want the short version of how to create a Minecraft Server, these are the broad strokes.

  • Check that your PC meets the system requirements
  • Make sure that you have the latest version of Java
  • Download the server software from the official Minecraft website and store it somewhere on your desktop
  • Create a Windows Batch File to start the server. Use the following command format for this: “java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M nogui”
  • Launch the Windows Batch File
  • Accept the End User License Agreement
  • Double click on the Windows Batch File you created earlier, open Minecraft and head into the multiplayer tab. From there, click on “Direct Connection” and type “localhost” into the search bar.
  • For a more detailed breakdown of each of these steps, keep reading below.

    Downloading The Minecraft Server File

Make a folder on your desktop named Minecraft Server. Next, go to the Minecraft website and click on the Minecraft_server.1.15.2.jar link to download the server file.

Move this file to your Minecraft Server folder and double click on it to run it.

Note: If youre on the Chrome browser, it will likely say this is a virus. As its from the official Minecraft site, its not, so dont panic. We good.

    Start The Minecraft Server

How to Join a Minecraft Server (PC / Java Edition)

To start the Minecraft server, open the Windows command prompt.

Navigate to the file path where the Minecraft server file was installed.

Start the server with the following command:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui

If youd rather use the servers UI, exclude the nogui parameter:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar

You can also create a .bat file to batch the commands together.

Once the server is running, you can invite others to connect to your server via your local IP address if theyre on your home network, or via your external/public IP address if theyre not on your home network.

    Create A Windows Batch File

This is where things start to get a little more complicated.

You will need to create a Windows Batch File to launch your Minecraft server and have it running as smoothly as possible.

To do this, head into the folder where you have stored the “server.jar” file and then create a new text document. The latter will eventually become your Windows Batch File, but don’t worry about that just yet.

Name the new text document something easily recognizable, like “run.txt” or “server_start.txt” and then open it.

In this text document, you will need to copy and paste the following command:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar nogui

If you are interested in what each of those bits mean, we have broken it down for you in a glossary below. Otherwise, if you’re eager to keep moving, just save the text document and skip ahead to Step 5.

    • Java: This just means that you are using a Java server.
    • Xms1024M -Xmx1024M: This is how many megabytes of RAM you want to allocate to the server. You can tweak this number if you want
    • Jar: The server file you downloaded is a jar file
    • Server.jar: This is the name of the server file that you previously downloaded. It is important to make sure that this bit is right, otherwise the command will not work. So just double check that your server file is indeed called the same thing.
    • Nogui: This disables the Minecraft Graphical User Interface meaning that the server can only be interacted with from your terminal.

Fix 7 Turn Off Windows Firewall

If Windows Firewall has blocked Minecrafts Internet access, the connection failure will occur. To see if thats the case, you can temporarily disable the firewall. Heres how:

  • On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to open the Run command. Then, type control firewall.cpl in the field and click OK.
  • Click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.
  • Select Turn off Windows Defender Firewall for Domain network, Private network and Public network and click OK.
  • Join the Minecraft server again and you should be able to connect to it without trouble.

How To Create A Batch File To Start The Server

Upon running the Java file, you should see loads of new files in your Minecraft Server folder. First we need to accept the EULA terms so everything can work. Look for the file named EULA and open it in Notepad. Search for the line ‘eula=false’ and change it to ‘eula=true’ then hit save.

Now for the fun stuff. Open up a new Notepad file. Copy the text below and paste it into the new, empty Notepad file:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.1.15.2.jar noguipause

See that bit in bold? Next youll need to change that to the file name of the Java file you downloaded from the Minecraft website. In our case, it was server.jar, so our text line would be:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar noguipause

Save the Notepad file and close it. Next, rename that Notepad file to ‘ServerStart.bat’ .

If all went off without a hitch, double-clicking this file should launch your Minecraft server via a CMD window . To end the server, go into the command window and type stop. Easy, right?

    Requirements To Join Minecraft Servers

Minecraft PC: How to Join External Servers

To join a Minecraft server, you only need to fulfill these basic requirements:

    • A device that supports and runs vanilla Minecraft smoothly
    • A Microsoft account that is connected to Minecraft
    • At least 1Mbps internet speed
    • At least 10Mbps internet speed
    • Server address or public IP address of the Minecraft server
    • Same or compatible game version as the server

Do keep in mind that you cant join multiplayer servers on pirated copies and custom Minecraft launchers. You need an official copy of the game to play online. As for the server address, you can find it on the servers website or can get it from the host. In case its a Realm server in Minecraft, the address will be a six-digit code. You can read all about Minecraft Realm servers via the linked guide.

    Console Online Memberships

Consoles players need to spend more money beyond the games cost to play on an online server. Depending upon your console, you need the following subscriptions to join servers in Minecraft:

Joining A Minecraft Server Step By Step

Joining a server is a fairly simple thing, but it can be a bit intimidating compared to normal matchmaking. Most games these days have a simple Quick Play button or a dedicated filter for each gamemode. Java Edition is a little more technical in this aspect.

  • Find out what server youre trying to join, and then write down their specific Server IP Address. For this step, well be using the official Apex Hosting server, so the IP will be play.apexmc.coBe sure to write down the IP exactly as it is written, as any missing or incorrect characters will cause the entire IP to not work.
  • Once you have the IP of the server youre trying to join, open up your Minecraft and on the main menu, select Multiplayer. This will bring you to the Multiplayer screen, which you will use to add and join servers.
  • Next, you have two options. You can either use Direct Connection to directly connect to the server with no steps in between, or you can use Add Server to add the server to your server list. I recommend adding the server if you plan on playing on that specific server regularly. Added servers can be joined without the need of typing the IP every time.
  • Using Direct Connection, just type the server IP in and then click Join Server. If you want to use Add Server, you do the same thing, but add a name to remember which server it is. This will also allow you to see any picture the server set for itself, the message of the day, the quality of the connection, and the player count.
  • What If You Dont Want To Host Your Server At Home

Hosting any kind of server from home means youre exposing your home network to the world.

If youd rather not take that risk, then you can use a hosting provider instead. Youll need to pay a monthly or annual fee, but you wont have to deal with the hassle of managing the server hardware.

A GoDaddy Virtual Private Server is a good fit if youre just getting started. Just keep in mind that youre sharing hardware with other users, so keep an eye on resource usage.

If you need a little more oomph and you want to hook up a lot of players, you might try a dedicated server instead.
