How To OP Yourself on A Minecraft Server

If you need to check to see a list of players with operator permissions on the server, navigate to “Customize” then “File Manager” in Prisma. From there, you’ll want to open the ops.json file and you’ll find a list of players there. Do not edit this file directly as doing so will result in a corrupted file, preventing your server from operating properly.

OP-rights are the absolute access to everything on a Minecraft server. With OP-rights you can execute every available command independent of installed permission plugins. OP users can be assigned levels that restrict some of their power. How ou set levels depend on your installed Minecraft version. In version 1.7.8 and lower the level is set in the Server.properties file. All versions above 1.7.8 use the ops.json to handle the levels.

The ops.json/server.properties is located in the games main directory of your “File Browser”.

Using Operator With Plugins Or Mods That May Affect It

If you are running a server type other than vanilla Minecraft and you have installed plugins or mods that introduce more complex permissions on your server, it is likely that these additions may interfere with the functions of the operator feature. It is important to note that this feature is, ultimately, vanilla and there is no way for us to guarantee how individual plugins or mods will modify it when added to your Minecraft server. As such, we always recommend checking the plugin/mod documentation prior to adding it to your server if you are reliant upon the use of operator permissions. If you are unsure where to start and/or have questions about this, please feel free to reach out to our team. We’re always happy to help!

Changing The Default Permission Level When Players First Join Your Server

Another great way to customize permissions on your server, is changing what permission level players have when they first join your server. You can do so in either the Nodecraft panel or in the server.properties file.

To change it from the Nodecraft panel, navigate to the “Game Settings” page on the left side, then click on the “Player Settings’ tab. Please note, if you haven’t set any OPs yet, this option will not show up.

To change it from the server.properties file, navigate to the “File Manager” page on the left side, then click on the square checkbox next to the file and press the “edit” button that appears. Add the permission level you want to default-player-permission-level.

Minecraft: Giving Yourself Or Other Players Operator Status On A Server/realm

Making a player an operator on a Minecraft server doesn’t take much, though the process may be slightly different depending on what service the server is hosted on. The process also depends on whether it is hosted via Minecraft’s server creation Java executable.

Methods for making a player an operator can be found below, including a couple of the most popular web-based hosting tactics:

Becoming an OP on Apex Hosting

  • Navigate to the server panel and click the console tab.
  • In the command line provided on the tab, type “op ” without quotations, where the username is the desired player.
  • This can also be done within Minecraft by an OP or administrator by typing “/op < username> ” without quotations in their chat console.
  • Becoming an OP on Shockbyte

  • Log in to the Multicraft control panel and head to the server console.
  • Inside the console’s chat input, type “op < username> ” without quotations.
  • Press enter or press the send button on the console window.
  • Like the Apex Hosting option, this can also be done in-game by logging into the Minecraft server as an OP or admin and typing “/op < username> ” for he necessary player.
  • Becoming an OP with ops.json or ops.txt

  • Players who have created a Minecraft server will have access to an ops.json and ops.txt file that allows them to designate operators.
  • In ops.txt, simply open the file with a text editor and enter the usernames of players to give OP status to, one per line, and then restart the server to confirm changes.

As a server owner you’ll be able to grant yourself and others OP to be able to run commands inside the game. Being an OP grants the player access to almost every command that is in the game, depending on their operator permission level.

We highly recommend only giving OP status to yourself and players you trust. As OPs are able to do basically everything on the server and can cause lots of problems if they abuse this power.

  • Giving Operator To A Player

How to OP Yourself in a Minehut Server. Minecraft

We have a video tutorial for giving OP to a player:

    Important note:

An operator is someone who has access to commands that are used in managing the server. Among the commands that an operator has access to are changing a player’s game mode, updating server difficulty, giving items, kicking and banning players, whitelisting, and even stopping and restarting a server. You can view a list of operator commands here:

There are three ways to set a player as OP:

    • Through the server console
    • In-game command
    • Editing the ops.json file

But in this tutorial, we will only discuss the first two ways as these are less complicated than the last option.

How Do I Give Myself Permissions Or Op Players On My Java Server

Operators are players with advanced server permissions. No plugins or mods are required in order to be able to grant operator permissions, though we do highly recommend using a permissions plugin, such as LuckPerms, if you wish to establish ranks and complex permissions on your server as it is not possible to do in vanilla Minecraft alone.Operators typically will have access to stop the server, kick/ban players, switch gamemodes or difficulties, clear inventories, teleport, summon items/blocks, and even op/deop other players. When used alone and unmodified, operator permissions are very broad. With access to all of these advanced commands, operators can easily grief the server or cheat.

Therefore, we do not recommend opping every player on your server you should only op trusted players.

It is also important to note that, whether or not players are opped, griefing can still occur on your server. If you wish to prevent unwanted/unknown players from joining your server, you’ll need to enable whitelisting. Operator permissions are only intended to give certain players additional permissions.

Minecraft OP status gives a player full access to all commands and permissions on a Minecraft: Pocket Edition server. By default, there are no Minecraft: Pocket Edition server operators on your server.

To “OP” yourself or others on a Minecraft: Pocket Edition Server:

    1. Login to your server’s control panel and select your Minecraft server.

    2. On the left-hand side of your control panel click “Console“.

    3. In your console, type op < “username”> . For Pocket Edition, authentication may require that you use your Xbox username which can have spaces within it. If that is the case, you can use quotation marks around your username to give yourself Op. For example, op “Iam Steve”

For the console that will already add an invisible / before the command.

    4. Press the “Send” button located to the right of your console or press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to enter in that command.

You will receive a response similar to “ INFO CONSOLE: Opped MCProHosting

You have now successfully “opped” that username.

How To Change The Op Levels

When a player is given OP status, they will automatically get the server default OP level. You can check this default level in the server.properties file, which can be found in its server folder.

You can change the default OP level by changing the value of the parameter op-permission-level.

In vanilla Minecraft , you cant give different OP level to different players: the level of all the Operators in the server has to be the same. To manage OP levels in a more versatile way, you would need to install a dedicated server plugin.

A good and reliable permission plugin is LuckPerms, which you can downoad here. If you follow the link you will also find useful information on how to install it and use it to its fullest.

If you are using a Minecraft server hosting provider, it is probably possible to manage it through the server control panel. It depends from what hosting provider you chose.
