How To Keep Maps In Frames

Creating a map wall is useful if you have lots of newcomers to your realm, or if you simply want to keep track of the Overworld you’re building in.

First, you want to craft some frames using sticks and leather.

Next, you want to place the frame on your wall by right-clicking with the frame in your hand.

With initialized map in-hand, right-click the frame to post the map. You can do this multiple times to create a mosaic of maps.

How To Make Large Wall Maps

I’ve looked it up and have seen many other people do it, but there seems to be no good guide on how to make them. Could somebody possibly link me a guide or something similar on how to do so?

You have to make sure your maps are zoomed out the same amount, and then fill them in and put them on the item frame. If you want to get the map on the right side of the center map, take your map and go east until you become a dot on the edge of the map, then activate your new map, zoom it out accordingly and fill it in, put it to the right of the center map, rinse and repeat.

Player Marker And Pointer

In Java Edition, every map contains a marker that marks the position of the player, and points in the same direction as the player.

In Bedrock Edition, a map can be crafted with or without this marker, and a map without a position marker can add one later by adding a compass to the map. When a map is crafted without a compass, it’s simply called an “empty map”, but when crafted with a compass, it’s called an “empty locator map”. The marker also turns red if the player enters the Nether with an Overworld map and show the player’s Overworld location relative to the Nether location. A map created in the End has a purple marker showing the player’s location. If an Overworld map is used in the End, a magenta dot appears on the player’s spawn point.

Name

Maps crafted from only paper do not show the location marker to add it, a compass must be added to the map.

In Bedrock Edition, a cartography table can also be used to adding pointer to create locator map or empty locator map, by adding compass with paper, empty map or map.

Create The Maps In Game

Tip: How to Make a Map Wall in Minecraft

Heres where things might get a little tricky.

We know that the images size is 3×4. Well, that means were going to have 12 maps total that will be rendered using the MC Map Item Tool.

We need to create those 12 maps in the game before doing anything else.

If youre in creative mode, this is as simple as grabbing an empty map from the creative inventory and right-clicking it 12 times to create 12 different filled maps with unique IDs. If youre in Survival mode, youll need to craft the 12 empty maps and then right-click on all 12 of those to make them filled maps. It doesnt matter what your filled maps look like. They can all be of the exact same area in your world. But you need to make them first before we can go further with the tool.

Once youve created your 12 maps , save your world or server and exit out of the world. Dont go back in until we get through the next few steps.

Java & Bedrock Instructions

These instructions are compatible with both Java and Bedrock and will guide you to a step by step process of installing a world to Minecraft.

NOTE that you cannot open Bedrock worlds in Java and vice versa you will need a converter to do that.

Extract the world

This is necessary if you have a compressed file.

  • Extract the compressed file.
  • If you see a file named level.dat, then you’re good to go! Extract the zip/rar to a folder
  • If you can only see a folder, open it. It might have the files. Extract that folder and rename it to a good name, like (WORLD
  • Importing into Minecraft

Once you extracted it to a folder, follow these steps:

  • Open the default directory for Minecraft folder.
  • On Java Edition, the name of the folder is .minecraft. Below is a table showing the default directory for .minecraft.
  • OS
    iOS Minecraft/games/com.mojang
  • Open the saves or minecraftWorlds folder. You will notice all your worlds are here.
  • Paste that folder into the mentioned folder.
  • Open the new folder and check to make sure it has everything in it, all right under WORLD.
  • Once they’re all there, launch the game, and continue below.
  • Find the folder in Minecraft

Here’s the hardest part: finding your new save in all your other saves.

  • Once Minecraft opens, click “Singleplayer” or “Play”
  • The name of the folder you copied will be the grayed out name under the world name .
  • The new save is usually all the way at the bottom, but that’s not always the case. You might need to do some hunting.

How Do I Create A Wall Of Maps With Item Frames

I recently came across this screenshot on the Minecraft wiki:

When I try to put different maps in item frames adjacent to each other, they do not join. I can’t get any number of maps to join into a single image, even when the maps adjacent should actually fit together.

How do I align maps in item frames to join as shown in the picture?

    • What is the earliest version of PC minecraft that expands the map beyond the item frame? I am running 1.6.2 Forge with IC2 mod.

Turns out the problem was that I am really disorganised. I had my maps all over the place and couldn’t wrap my head around it.

I started a new creative world to try from scratch, but this time I organised every map in my inventory in the same formation that it would be on the item frames:

I then created each map one by one, starting with the center, making sure I put it back in the correct position afterwards:

I did this until I had filled out every map:

After I had filled out all of the maps I put them in item frames row by row until I got this final result:

If you begin an empty map in a cave , it generates a cave map. This map type shows caves within a 16-block high vertical slice of the world containing where the map was initially created. This can also be used in the nether to generate useful nether maps.

    Track Maps Relative Positions

Its helpful to keep track of the relative positions of the maps. A useful method of displaying the map set is to craft 10 Item Frames and place them on a wall in a 3-by-3 square with the tenth atop or beside the square. Place the zoom-level 4 overview in the tenth item frame. Place the nine maps in their appropriate positions in the 3×3 square. A sign can be added which identifies the origin and perhaps the corner coordinates. You could also duplicate any of these which you wish to carry with you while fully exploring an area. Information added to one copy will be automatically updated to all other copies.

Set of maps in item frames before 1.8

In the illustration, the sign provides the map # of each of the maps shown. Map #127 is the center map. Map #185 is the map to the north, #189 to the right of that, and the numbering continues clockwise.

As another option, use a chest, and store the maps in slots in the chest that correspond with their in-world positions. If you use this trick, be careful to put them back in the right place once done with them.

You could also craft a Book & Quill in which you can write descriptions of what the map-set covers. This is a useful place to make notes of interesting spots found on those maps. That Book & Quill can be placed in an item frame next to the map set.

Another trick is to name maps on an anvil. You can name a map for its center or its position relative to other maps, i.e. at the origin of your mapping, one map east of the origin.

    Review Your Map Parts

The next page youll see doesnt have any settings you need to change, but it does give you one last chance to look over your image and each individual map part before the files are rendered. This is your chance to see if the image will be skewed or squashed, if any of it looks strange after the colors are converted, or if a part of the image is missing. If so, you may need to go back to Step 1 and re-adjust your image to fit better.

If everything looks good, though, click the Adjust colors button to continue.

I think maps are a really great addition, and I like how each map has a fixed starting point. The only problem that I forsee is ending up with a chest full of different maps. To look at them all you’d have to stick them all in your inventory and use each one individually.

I’m not sure how difficult this would be, but I really love the idea of being able to put them all up on a wall, so that you could see them easily and all at once. That way, you can add new pieces of map to your wall, and create a giant map of the world you live in!

Minecraft: How To Easily Create Maps In Creative

Note: the word map in this question refers to the maps you can create in game from the world, not to the world itself.

On my minecraft server running in creative mode, we just started to create a map-wall of our world in 1:2 scale. This means:

  • get a new map
  • go to the area of which you need a map
  • open the map to initialize it
  • use a crafting table to extend the map to factor 1:2
  • move around to fill the map
  • repeat until you have all maps you need
  • place all maps onto frames on a wall to get a large, seamless map of the world
  • Though I guess you can’t avoid to move around to fill a map, steps 3 an 4 are a bit annoying. So, is there any way to speed this up? For instance a command which gives an uninitialized map with 1:2 factor directly?
