Get The Latest Version Of Java
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server is making sure you have the latest version of Java installed. Minecraft requires Java to run the game and having the latest version will help us run our server without issues.
You can install the latest version of Java here. Once there, click the red Java Download button as you can see below:
Then, read and accept the terms by clicking the red Agree and Start Free Download button.
The Java setup run file should now be in the download folder of your computer. If you need help with finding the download folder, type in downloads into your computer search bar and open the Downloads folder.
Once in the downloads folder find the JavaSetup executable file and run this application. A popup window may appear asking if the application can make changes to your computer. Click to allow access, you may be asked to provide a password for these permissions.
Once the application loads click to install Java.
You may be asked to uninstall a previous Java version, do so as keeping an older version does not help with our server setup.
Once any previous versions are removed continue through the window prompts until Java is downloaded and up to date.
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server should now be complete. The following step we must take is downloading and setting up the actual Minecraft server folder.

Refer to your routers documentation to find specific instructions on how to configure port forwarding for your device. For Minecraft, youll need to forward TCP port;25565.
Youll also need to enter your servers local IP address as the Output IP or Server IP for the forwarded port. This tells the router which device to point at. To find your servers local IP, open a command prompt and enter;ipconfig.

A Brief Overview Of The Three Ionos Server Options
A Dedicated Server with specially allocated hardware in our data center is an excellent solution for hosting individual applications. As a basis for server applications like a Minecraft server, this server model is ideal. Billing takes place per-minute with this package.
We guarantee an external broadband connection of the server with up to 400 Mbit/s regardless of the chosen server model.
However, to make a Minecraft server, the virtualized resources you rent with a vServer or Cloud Server are also perfectly suitable. Even if you dont get dedicated hardware components here, the selected performance is guaranteed at all times. When deciding between vServer and Cloud Server, the payment model might make a difference:
If you are unsure when and how often you want to run your Minecraft server, a Cloud Server Package is the perfect choice, as here we only charge for the resources you actually need and use.
If you rent a vServer, you pay a fixed monthly amount, regardless of whether your Minecraft server is running or not. However, if youre planning on continuous operation, you will get significantly lower costs than with a cloud server.

Hardware For Your Server
A dedicated server is also a great way to get extra mileage out of an old PC. Using a separate PC for your gaming server frees up resources on your system, and helps ensure greater stability for both your gaming PC and your server.
Here are some dedicated server hardware requirements that will help ensure you can host the latest games. These specs should be a decent baseline for most 32-player multiplayer games, but you may need even more power for games with 64 or more players. Keep in mind: The more players on your server, the greater the strain on your hardware.
- 64-bit Windows* OS
- Solid State Drive it’s best not to run a server on a mechanical hard drive the constant read-write actions and slower speeds could cause problems
- At least 8GB RAM, with 16 or more being optimal
- Quad-core Intel® CPU, minimum 2.5GHZ clock speed

Renting A Minecraft Server Or Building A Home Server
Perhaps one of the biggest decisions to be made when looking into how to set up a Minecraft server is whether to host it on your own computer or to pay to have it hosted with a hosted provider, thereby renting the server space and hardware.
The most obvious difference between the two is that hosting your Minecraft server on your own computer doesnât cost anything, whereas renting a Minecraft server does. Before making this decision, factor in these considerations regarding renting a server or building one at home:
Building your Minecraft server on your PC can be a viable option if you plan on keeping your network to a small group of trusted friends. However, if you want to open it up to more players, especially those you might not personally know, renting a dedicated server is probably the way to go.
Start The Minecraft Server
To start the Minecraft server, open the Windows command prompt.
Navigate to the file path where the Minecraft server file was installed.
Start the server with the following command:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui
If youd rather use the servers UI, exclude the nogui parameter:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar
You can also create a .bat file to batch the commands together.
Once the server is running, you can invite others to connect to your server via your local IP address if theyre on your home network, or via your external/public IP address if theyre not on your home network.
