Oh right, yes, they are making a Minecraft movie, aren’t they? Is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia chap Rob McElhenney still on to direct it? What strange times. Anyway! Mojang today announced, three years in advance, when the movie will launch: May 24th, 2019.
I mention this because the schools usually half their summer half-term holiday around then, so you can use this time to plan and make yourself scarce if you have nieces and nephews with parents who’ll say “You like those games, don’t you? You can take them, can’t you? You will, won’t you? I’m just… I’m so tired. I can’t deal with them right now. You don’t have a proper job, do you?”
What’s it even about? Heck if I know. What even is it? Some sort of a jolly adventure, I suppose. Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode is a friendly little fantasy hero story set in Sticklebricklandia, calling upon Minecraft monsters, contraptions, and so on when appropriate. Maybe this’ll shoot for a LEGO Movie vibe? I’ve no idea what to expect, other than – surely – a lot of cameo appearances from famous Minecraft YouTubefolk.

The Minecraft movie was actually first announced all the way back in March 2014 when Notch shared on his page that someone was trying to leak the fact that were working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie.
The Tweet understandably went viral on social media, even with the likes of CaptainSparklez asking whether he could provide some voice over work for the feature project.
Later that year, Mojang COO Vu Bui said in an interview with The Guardian that the film was in its early-stages of development and that it was a large-budget production.
In June 2016, Mojang Studios confirmed the title would be Minecraft: The Movie and that the film would premiere on May 24th, 2019. However, in August 2018, this first release window was pushed back following the director Rob McElhenney and writer Jason Fuchs were dropping the project.

Minecraft is the lastest film to be delayed, but bigger questions remain regarding this project’s future.
Production of the Minecraft movie has encountered another setback as Warner Bros. delays nearly all of their major upcoming productions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the Minecraft movie was recently scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022. Now, though, Warner Bros. confirms that the movies release has been pushed back from that date and that no updated release date for the project is available at this time.
While its entirely possible that WB is just trying to find the best way to squeeze Minecraft into their now-chaotic production schedule, we wouldnt be surprised if they simply dont know what the status of the project is and what a realistic timeframe for its release looks like.
After all, the production of the Minecraft movie has been chaotic so far. The original plan was for Shawn Levy to direct a Jason Fuchs-written treatment of the adaptation that was scheduled for release in 2019. However, Levy dropped out of the project early on and was replaced by Rob McElhenney.
