How to make a free Microsoft account for Minecraft

ByHenry T. Casey19 January 2016

If youre making the move from OS X to Windows, one of the first things youre going to need to do is create a Microsoft account. Just as OS X requires an Apple ID to log in to services and make purchases on your MacBook, Windows needs your Microsoft account information for a wide variety of features. Your Microsoft account information can be used to buy apps, make Skype calls, create, edit and share documents with Office 365 and share files in OneDrive. If you already own an Xbox, you probably already have a Microsoft Account, its connected to your gamertag, achievements and other account information.

Windows users can even sign into their computers using their Microsoft Account, though it’s not mandatory. Heres how to take your first step into the wild world of Windows, and make your Microsoft Account:

All Mojang Games Will Actually

Youre going to be blocked from playing Minecraft if you dont add some security to your account. Minecrafts owner has mandated that a Microsoft account is required for all of Mojangs games.

The reason for the change is mostly focused on security and safety. Itll allow for two-factor authentication, itll introduce improved parental controls, and itll enable chat and invitation blocking. Another perk is that all Minecraft PC games will be connected to the same acconut.

This affects all editions of Minecraft, from the original Java Edition to the most current version. Microsoft assures everyone that nothing else will change, though. Microsoft says Youll also keep your Minecraft Java username, and new players will still get to choose their Minecraft username. Once youve completed the free account migration, youll receive a cape for your trouble the cape can be seen in the gallery below.

Its all going down relatively soon. Anyone with a Java or Mojang account will have to make the switch sometime early next year. New players will have to create Microsoft accounts rather than Mojang accounts starting this fall.

Minecraft Java Edition Now Requires A Microsoft Account

It’s all about increasing security and ensuring all Minecraft games on PC are connected to the same account.

Mojang Studios, the game development studio that gave us Minecraft, has announced that going forward all of its games will require a Microsoft account to play. For now, that means anyone playing Minecraft Java Edition needs to start using a Microsoft account if they don’t already.

In a blog post, Mojang says it realizes change is inconvenient, especially when it potentially requires tens of millions of Minecraft Java Edition players to sign up for a Microsoft account. However, the the switch is apparently necessary and very important, mainly for security reasons.

As Mojang is owned by Microsoft, this announcement should come as no surprise to anyone. It’s also imperative that, even if you don’t want to make the change to a Microsoft account, you do so soon. Mojang makes it clear the switch in mandatory, and if you don’t do it, “in several months you wont be able to log in anymore which means you wont be able to play either.”

Microsoft Account Login For Minecraft

To migrate your Minecraft Java account to Microsoft, you will first need to log into your Mojang account.

You log into your Mojang account by heading over to the official Mojang website and punching all of your info in – use the email you created your java account and your password.

Once logged in, you should be taken directly to your profile, but in case you weren’t, you can find your profile by clicking your email at the top right of your screen. A small tab will open up, and you will need to click profile.

After this, you will be taken to your profile, and at the top of your screen will be a small tab that will give you the option to move your account. Click the green move my account button to begin the process of Migrating your account to Microsoft.

The first step will be to confirm your email address. This will require a code Mojang will send to the email you created the account on. Grab the code input it into the box that will appear right after you get the code.

Next, you will need to create a Microsoft and Xbox account. If you have one already for both, just log into the Microsoft account now, and your Java account will automatically migrate over and be linked.

If you don’t have one yet, create one now for both Microsoft and Xbox, and log in with the Microsoft account to migrate your java account to Microsoft.

Once crossplay has been enabled in Minecraft Dungeons, if you have already set up a Microsoft account, then you should only need to log into your Microsoft account to set up crossplay.

If you do not own a Microsoft account, don’t own Minecraft, and have just bought Minecraft Dungeons, follow the steps below to set up a new Microsoft account:

  • After buying Minecraft Dungeons from the Nintendo eShop or PlayStation Store, open the game.
  • A prompt will appear asking you to sign in for online coop. Press the A or X button to continue.
  • After signing up for a Microsoft account, use a PC or mobile phone to go to the remote connect site. Enter the unique code that’s displayed on the right of the screen.
  • Sign into your Microsoft account on your PC or mobile phone. The Xbox Live profile should appear on your Switch.
  • Select “Let’s Play” to complete the linking process.
  • You should then be able to play with friends on other consoles by selecting “Friends”, then looking at the option to “Find Cross-Platform Friends”.
  • This Has Nothing To Do With Safety

Security improvements and anti-harassment tools are always welcome, particularly two-factor authentication. That said, there is no reason why these changes had to be implemented via a mandatory Microsoft account. Players have been asking for things like two-factor authentication for years via tools like Google Authenticator, especially after Microsoft added the ability to spend real money in the Minecraft Marketplace.

There is a genuine improvement that Microsoft could offer Java Edition customers in exchange for compelling them to switch, but Microsoft explicitly isnt offering it. According to the Minecraft Java Account Mitigation FAQ, Java Edition will still only allow you to play with other players who have Java Edition. Microsoft even admits that this is strictly an account front-end change in the FAQ, when it states: There will be no changes to Java Edition besides the account move and the new security features. Java Edition will still be available, supported, and updated just as before!

The good news is, PvP and modding in the Java Edition will remain completely unchanged. The bad news is, Microsoft has so little to offer, the company attempted to pre-empt the problem by hanging a lantern off it.

Spoiler: Your reward for doing this is a free cape. Microsoft has not revealed if players will have any input into the design of their cape, or if literally every single player will receive the exact same model.

Minecraft News: Players Will Now Require A Microsoft Account To Play The Game

Minecraft: Java Edition is indeed moving houses, with it making the switch from Mojang, and taking its place alongside other Minecraft games on Microsoft. However, the change does not require players to immediately make new Microsoft accounts, as the changes will only kick in until January 2021.

However, moving from Mojang to Microsoft is mandatory for Minecraft players, as they simply wouldn’t be able to log in after a few months. Since a login is necessary to play the game, players must move accounts as soon as they can. However, bear in mind that nothing actually changes in the game except for the need to log into a Microsoft account, instead of Mojang.

This has been done to pave the way for future plans for Minecraft by Microsoft, as well as to provide a more secure platform to the players.

Microsoft Says Starting Next Year All Minecraft Java Edition Users Will Have To Have A Microsoft Account To Play

To enhance security and safety, Mojang, the makers of MineCraft, will require players to have a Microsoft account starting in early 2021.

Correction: Microsoft was in touch this afternoon through a spokesperson to clarify that the movement of accounts is only for people who use the Java edition of MineCraft. There are different versions of MineCraft, and this new rule will only pertain to the Java version, Microsoft’s Xbox team said through a spokesperson.

The primary point of distinction is contained in the following item in the FAQ:

A: All players who use a Mojang account or a legacy Minecraft account to play Minecraft Java edition will need to migrate to a Microsoft account in order to continue playing Java edition.

Mojang, makers of the MineCraft video game, announced in a blog post that starting early next year, all users of the Java version of the game will have to get a Microsoft account in order to play.

For users of MineCraft Java edition, that means migrating off of their existing account with Mojang, the studio that was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 for $17.8 billion.

“Moving forward, all of our games will require a Microsoft account to play including Minecraft Java Edition,” reads a staff post on the MineCraft blog.

In a companion FAQ, Mojang stated that the shift is for the purpose of safety and security:

Minecraft Java Edition Will Soon Require A Microsoft Account

Minecraft Java Edition has always operated pretty much as-is following developer Mojangs acquisition by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Javas been on its own little Mojang account island until now. Java Edition will soon require a Microsoft account to play, but youll at least be getting a free cape for your troubles.

In early 2021, you will be required to move your Java or Mojang account over to the Microsoft account system. Mojang says this is primarily to introduce two-factor authentication for increased security, though itll also lead to improved parental controls, chat and invitation blocking, and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

As for Minecraft mods and PvP, Mojang says absolutely nothing is changing. Java and Bedrock will continue to be entirely separate games. Youll be able to keep using your in-game Java username, though if youre creating a Microsoft account for the first time, you might have to swap account names. If you already have a Microsoft account, of course, youll be able to merge your Minecraft sign in right away.

To ease the pain of the switch, Mojang is giving away what was once Java Editions most exclusive item: a cape. Youll get a free cape for participating in the migration, and while it wont feature the exclusive patterns of the Minecon mantles, it will finally give everyone an opportunity to feel royal for a bit.
