How To Get Minecraft Worlds Back

Why Back Up Your Minecraft Universe

HOW TO GET YOUR MINECRAFT WORLDS BACK AFTER LOSING THEM! Windows 10 edition tutorial.

As you can imagine the word around the neighborhood is that those How-To Geek guys know computers and love Minecraft, so weve received more than a few panicked phone calls and knocks on the door from neighborhood parents whose childrens elaborate Minecraft creations have gone missing.

We cant overemphasize the importance of backing up your Minecraft creations, both to protect them from data loss and game upgrades-gone-wrong, but also to protect them from hiccups in the modification process as you move onto more advanced Minecraft modding. Were excited to build on our original Minecraft series and show you how to modify your game and expand the Minecraft experience in ways you may not have even realize you could, but we want to be very sure you dont destroy your awesome creations in the process.

Lets take a look at where the critical files are stored, which ones you need to back up, and how to automate the process. While this series, like the last series, is primarily focused on the PC edition and not the smaller but popular Pocket Edition, well even highlight how to back up mobile editions of Minecraft.

Can You Uncorrupt A Minecraft World

A Minecraft world getting corrupted is something that happens on occasion. An issue arises that messes with the saved data. In some cases, it will be a partial corruption that means you can just put stuff back to how it was. In other cases, an entire world is corrupted, stopping you from opening it at all. Generally, you wont be able to restore the most recent save, as this is the file that is corrupted. You should, however, be able to restore a previous save, if you have one available.

But if you cant open your world, and dont have any recent saves to restore? There are still some things you can try. It isnt easy, and it involves some complicated bits so complicated that Minecrafts help centre refuses to actually offer it as a solution. They simply state that you follow this process at your own risk.

But if youre willing to give it a shot, heres what you need to do.

Restore From A Local Backup

To restore from a local backup, you essentially perform the same steps we outlined in our guide to uploading custom worlds to Minecraft Realms, except this time youre not uploading a world you downloaded or started on your local machine, but a world youve previously downloaded from your Realms server.

Select the world you wish to restore, in our case World 1, and then select Reset world.

In the reset world menu, youll be warned that the process will delete your current world and then be prompted to make a world change selection. Select Upload world.

Look for the local entry that matches the Realms name, the world name, and the backup date of the file you wish to upload. In the screenshot above, you can see the world is clearly labeled Blockland . If you do not see the world you wish to upload in the list this means that it is not in the local Minecraft /saves/ directory , youll need to take a copy of the world folder and dump it back into the /saves/ directory.

Select the Upload button and your local world save will be uploaded to your Minecraft Realms server. Set that world map as the current one and then hop right back into the world and resume play as if it was the day you backed the map up.

Sometimes you cant let go.

It doesnt matter what game it is if you lose a save file that has a lot of progress spent into it, you are likely to get quite frustrated. It never feels good to lose something you put so much effort into. This is true for Minecraft worlds, which are the games version of saved files, and all progress will be contained in these worlds. Start a new world, your progress resets. If you lose that world, there are many hours in front of you to get back to where you were before. Here is how to retrieve deleted Minecraft worlds.

To ensure you can easily retrieve Minecraft worlds, be sure to backup your worlds. In Bedrock Edition, select the pencil edit button next to the world in the main menu. Go to Game and scroll down to Copy World. That will ensure that you can always return to that copied version if your original file gets corrupted or deleted. For Java Edition, just simply copy the folder for the world in on either your PC or a drive.

If you did not create a backup version of your Minecraft world, things are a lot more complicated. Worlds are locally stored on your device, so if you wipe it from your console or PC, it can be challenging to get that back. If you are on PC, you can try the following process:

To Import An Mcworld File:

When you’re ready to import a a world back into the game, navigate to the world list from the title screen. Click on the “Import” Button to the right of the “Create New” button. A File Explorer window will appear. Navigate to where you have an MCWORLD file saved to your PC, click it, then click “Import”. Again, it may take some time to import your world.

Now that you have your Minecraft world backed up, here is a quick and easy guide that you can follow to restore your game:

  • Select the world which you have backed up.
  • Navigate to the ‘Open Backups Folder’ button. Your backup files will be in this folder. They should be in .zip file format.
  • Find the backup file for the world that you would like to restore. Make a copy of it.
  • Go to your Minecraft ‘saves’ menu.
  • On Mac OS, this can be found in Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves.
  • If you’re running Windows, you can locate this folder by hitting Win+R and typing ‘%appdata%\.minecraft\saves’ into the search bar that pops up.
  • Once you’ve located your game’s ‘saves’ folder, you can paste your backup file into it. Be sure to unzip the file.
  • Close and reopen Minecraft. Your world should now be restored.

    Locating The Critical Files

How to Get Minecraft Worlds Back On PS4 (Updated)

The first thing you need to know about backing up Minecraft files is that there is an enormous difference between the Minecraft launcher and the Minecraft system files.

The Minecraft launcher is the application you start the game with and is labeled as the following for the three supported operating systems:

    Minecraft.exe
    Minecraft.jar Linux

This launcher is also a tool that helps you customize pregame options such as which profile you wish to use. It communicates with the Minecraft servers, it helps you log into your account, and it launches the game. Backing up the launcher does nothing and this is where many players discover that theyve missed the important files.

The actual game files, including game libraries, logs, and most importantly your saved games, are typically located in a completely different spot than your launcher.

For the three primary operating systems they are located in the following places by default:

    Windows
    Linux /home//.minecraft/

The only time you will not find the Minecraft system files in these locations is if you are using an alternative third-party launching tool or you have manually changed your game profile to point to a new directory location.

    Back Up Minecraft World

Open File Explorer and click inside the location bar. Enter the following path, and tap the Enter key.

    %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds

Here, you will see folders. Each folder represents one world. To back up all the worlds youve created in Minecraft, copy all these folders somewhere they wont be deleted by accident.

To back up a single world, you need to first identify it. Open a folder, and inside, look for a text file called levelname. Open it, and inside you will see the name for the world. The name will match what you entered in Minecraft when you created the world.

Once youve identified it, you need only copy the folder elsewhere.

Question: I Installed And Was Building In Minecraft Bedrock Beta And Then I Switched Back To The Normal Version Of Minecraft Bedrock And All My Worlds Disappeared

Answer: Beta is different than the original. Minecraft Official tells you to back up any data you want to keep before switching. Basically, you Uninstalled Normal Minecraft, Installed Beta Minecraft, and then reinstalled Normal Minecraft. That wipes out the Normal Worlds first, then when you reinstalled it, you wiped out your Beta Worlds. Unfortunately, theyre gone. If you decide to switch to beta again in the future, make sure to follow the steps in the video and then copy and back up the Normal Worlds folder to an external hard drive or memory card. That way, you can replace them after you reinstall the Normal version of Minecraft later. Same if you want to keep any worlds you make in beta, and want to be able to reinstall and play them later. Note: Beta Worlds and Normal Worlds are incompatible because the Beta Version is more advanced with newer coding.

    Force A Server Backup

We noted in the beginning of this section that server-side backups occur automatically in the background at intervals while your server is active. Curiously, however, there is no GUI button or in-game console command where you can force a backup, like typing /backup while playing on the server.

Nonetheless, you can actually force a backup in a clever way if you need to. If you and your friends are planning on doing a major change to your builds that would be really annoying to reverse, this is a great little trick. Pull up the configuration menu of your Realms server and unload your current world and temporarily replace it with a minigame by selecting the Minigame button, seen above, and picking a game.

This is a completely undocumented trick, but it works like a charm. When you switch to the minigame level , Realms automatically performs an immediate backup of your current world before unloading it and replacing it with the minigame. Simply select your world to reload it and the backup process is complete.

    Hi there,

Does Minecraft use an autosave feature? If so, the Xbox Live service updates your saved data to the Xbox Cloud storage in case you need to delete the local saved data or the data gets corrupted and deleted.

First try a hard reset and power cycle. Follow this article for guidance:

Start the game after you fully reboot your Xbox. If that doesn’t help then you may need re-install your game.

    Let us know any updates!

    Where Are The Save Files

As we mentioned in our How To Get Started With Minecraft article, the game is in the form of an executable Jar file. It creates a directory on your computer for your saved worlds and settings, but it differs depending on what OS youre running.

    On Windows:

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft

Take note that the AppData directory is hidden, so be sure to show hidden files from within Folder Options.

    On Mac OS:

    On Linux:

    /home/username/.minecraft

Take note that the .minecraft directory is hidden in your home folder, so if youre using Nautilus, hit CTRL+H to show hidden files.

Inside, youll find some files and folders, but the only really important one is the saves folder. Inside, youll find your different Minecraft worlds.

The saves folder is what you want to back up. If youre running a server, whatever directory the servers executable file is in should have a folder with the worlds name. The default is just world, but you probably want to back up the entire server folder, so you save all of the settings as well. If youre running a Bukkit server, this goes for double since all of your plugins will also have their own settings.

How To Recover A Deleted Minecraft World On Pc

Before explaining yourself in detail how to recover a deleted Minecraft world, you might be interested in learning more about this topic, for example on the causes that lead, in fact, to the loss of one of the worlds created in the famous title of Mojang.

Well, the most common cause is the deletion of the world, voluntary or following an error. It could have happened to you too: maybe you removed one of your bailouts thinking you no longer needed it, only to regret it soon after or it could also be that you did it incorrectly, pressing the wrong key. The worst cases could be an accident caused by an external person who has access to your device, or the formatting of the latter, resulting in the deletion of all data on it.

An equally unpleasant case can be there corruption of save data. This, in most cases, happens when Minecraft is closed without saving the open world at that time. Game files become corrupted and the world in question no longer appears in the list of those available on the device.

Thankfully, regardless of the type of problem that may have led to the loss of a world in Minecraft, there are solutions that can be applied to fix it. Which? Read on and you will find out.
