Minecraft: What is a griefer?
  • 17 Nov 201517 Nov 2015

It’s anti-bullying week and we have been taking a look at how people bully each other in Minecraft.

Griefing is a name for a type of bullying that can happen in Minecraft.

It can happen on multi-player games online.

It’s when someone damages a person’s buildings, sets harmful traps, or steals all of their items on purpose, just to be mean.

This can be frustrating for players, whose hard work can be destroyed very quickly.

Ayshah has been speaking to some of you, who have experienced griefing, and also got some top tips from Youtuber Stampy.

Griefing In Red Dead Online And Gta Online

The two open-world hits from Rockstar Games have been gathering an immense community around them for years. Gamers in this community have also had to deal with many griefers on their excursions through virtual Los Santos or the digital Wild West. But regardless of whether its a gangsters paradise or a cowboy country, the methods used by the griefers here are very similar. In both cases, they ambush player characters to kill them right outside the safe starting area or other safe zone.

Spawn killing and spawn camping, i.e. waiting at a new entry point with the intention of killing the character again immediately, also falls under griefing. In Red Dead Online, lassoing is a common form of attack. Cowboys lasso each other, tie their victim up and drag them behind them either on foot or on horseback.

Another thing griefers like to do in the online Rockstar gaming universe is to join a party, i.e. a group of players with a fixed number of participants, and go on a mission with them. Sounds pretty harmless? Well, instead of helping the group, the griefer either does nothing or hinders the other players in their group objectives. Even though the griefers cant do any direct damage through friendly fire settings, the rest of the party has a harder time reaching their destination.

How Do You Grieve In Minecraft

Try digging underneath a house made of obsidian/bedrock if you want to grief it. Many people forget to add a floor. Dont grief people for no reason, especially if they are new to the server. Griefing a house made of diamonds is expected ,a house made of bedrock or obsidian, smart, but a wood ,dirt cobblestone etc.

How Do You Deal With Griefing In Minecraft Servers

Banning or kicking are the only options, although to lessen the impact you can tell players to only have chat on when they need it. This form of griefing is spawning mobs to the point that the server lags. With enough lag, the map can become corrupted and unusable. If the spawned mobs are hostile, they can be especially destructive on PvP servers.

What To Do If You Are Griefed

What is griefing and trolling in Minecraft?

The best thing to do if you are griefed on a server is to report the griefing to an active admin or moderator who is on the server. Usually, admins and moderators have some knowledge and expertise on how to revert the griefing therefore, reporting it to them is always the best choice.

If you are an admin on a server, there are some options for you that can be used to protect certain areas to prevent griefers from griefing those areas.

You can try to make an area surrounded by bedrock and allow griefers to only cause destruction there.

However, on servers that allow griefing, you may simply just have to deal with it.

What Is Mob Griefing In Minecraft

Minecraft players who have spent any sizable amount of time in Survival Mode have likely experienced the annoying act of mob griefing.

Unlike standard griefing, which is perpetrated by other players, mob griefing is executed by Minecraft’s mobs .

If a Creeper explodes and destroys precious blocks or an Enderman swipes one to carry with him, players are witnessing mob griefing at work.

Mob griefing can be a hassle when a player is building an important project. Fortunately, there is a way to get rid of this act with a simple console command.

    Why Does Griefing Exist

Some people simply enjoy destroying things and hindering other people, much to the disappointment of others. In this regard, while griefing is disruptive, it can also result in very real harm to game developers. For example, when gamers of membership-based online games are exposed to griefers due to a lack of moderation and subsequently lose interest in the game, this leads to lost revenue.

Griefers know theyre annoying others and this is part of their motivation. From the real world, this can most easily be compared to the principle of schadenfreude. Griefers are spoilsports in the truest sense of the word. Some even know theres an audience for it and live-stream their antics.

Furthermore, griefers love to see it when their antics drive a streamer on Twitch up the wall. They see this as rewarding and boast to each other in corresponding communities. This is also where they train new griefers.

What Does Mob Griefing Actually Do

Below is a list of what mobs can grief if you leave Mob Griefing enabled:

    • Mobs trampling farmland
    • Blaze fireballs creating fire
    • Ghast fireball explosions destroying blocks

If mob griefing is turned off the game is obviously easier but it can take away the proper survival element of Minecraft when you take into consideration some of the griefing activities.

Some are quite annoying such as Ghast fireball explosions destroying blocks.

    Griefing What Is It Exactly

When gamers in multiplayer games deliberately act against the server rules or community guidelines and prevent the progress of other players, this is called griefing. People who behave in this way and cause grief to other players – this is the literal origin of the word – are therefore called griefers. Learn more about the term itself, what it looks like in gameplay, what the motives are for griefing, and how it can be prevented.

A fast, and potentially more effective, method is spawning withers. End crystals are also effective, but more expensive and less practical to place. This can be avoided with block and chunk protection plugins if you are using Bukkit. Logging and rollback plugins can completely undo the damage done by individual griefers.

I understand that there are no second chances, which SUCKS, but I would still like to know what I did wrong!

Grief is NOT any of the following:

Griefing In Minecraft: Everything Players Need To Know

Griefing is an ancient practice that has been present in Minecraft from the moment multiplayer was enabled. In its simplest form, griefing is the purposeful destruction, trolling, and corruption of a Minecraft server. Griefing is not allowed in most servers. However, some servers do not have penalties against it.

As seen in the image above, players have intentionally griefed the spawn of the 2b2t anarchy server, which is allowed due to its “no rules” policy. Many players find this type of gameplay attractive, as seen by the popularity of the 2b2t server.

    The Origins Of Griefing

A story titled “A Rape in Cyberspace” published in The Village Voice in 1993 is perhaps the oldest account of griefing on record. Author Julian Dibbell reported on a community-wide prank that was orchestrated by an anonymous New York University student by the name Mr. Bungle in the multi-user dungeon, LambdaMOO.

Multi-user dungeons were precursors to todayâs massively-multiplayer online role playing games that let early gamers interact with one another by using specialized code. Mr. Bungle exploited a quirk in LambdaMOO to create copies of other players, which he then used to describe acts of sexual violence in a forum visible to all active users of the game.

Mr. Bungleâs actions outraged the community, prompting users to post on the gameâs mailing list about the emotional trauma this early example of griefing caused them. Dibbell interviewed a woman from Seattle, one of the victims of Mr. Bungleâs stunt, and she admitted to him that she wrote an angry comment with âpost-traumatic tears streaming down her face” demanding the prankster be removed from LambdaMOO.

“I also think that Mr. Bungle was being a vicious, vile fuckhead, and I ⦠want his sorry ass scattered from #17 to the Cinder Pile,” she wrote. “Iâm not calling for policies, trials, or better jails. Iâm not sure what Iâm calling for. Virtual castration, if I could manage it.”

How Can You Tell Who Is Grieving You In Minecraft

The easiest way to know for certain is to ask them directly with their parents present, both at the same time ideally. Tell their parents that someone has been bullying other kids in the online game you host and that, based on the logs, you can determine that the only people online at the time were their kids.

How To Disable Mob Griefing In Minecraft

Mob griefing can be one of the more aggravating experiences within Minecraft. The explosions caused by Creepers are especially arduous, as players tend to spend time filling in the large holes left by their attacks.

Mojang accounted for this relatively quickly and provided an antidote to their community’s woes.

For Minecraft players on either console or computer platforms, there is a nifty command that will disable mob griefing from all mobs in the game. This command is often implemented in multiplayer worlds to avoid Creepers and Endermen savaging the landscape while interacting with a large base of players.

Additionally, it prevents zombies from destroying doors, animals from trampling tilled farmland, rabbits from eating crops, and so forth. However, it also disables villagers from doing things like harvesting and replanting crops, so players should keep that in mind.

In Minecraft Java Edition, all players will need to do is open their chat console in-game and type “/gamerule mobGriefing false” to disable griefing from all mobs in the game world. This will only work in a single-player world or a multiplayer world where the player has the appropriate privileges enabled.

To disable mob griefing in Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition, players will first need to ensure they have Host Privileges enabled for their world. They can then select a world from their world list.

Upon applying these changes, mob griefing should no longer be possible in the player’s Minecraft world of choice.
