In a bit of surprising news, we finally saw a release date for the latest update. It hits both Bedrock and Java on June 8th, today.
This makes sense to drop just a week before E3 to allow people to take it in and enjoy it without all those game announcements. That being said, you can actually play it right now.
Minecraft 117 Caves & Cliffs All New Items
The list of new Minecraft 1.17 items is not extremely long, but there are definitely some fun additions to the game. Most notably, theres the new copper ingot material which can be used to create a handy spyglass or a lightning rod. You also get more decoration option thanks to the addition of glow ink sacs. And last but not least: you can catch an axolotl mob and carry it around in a bucket. Transporting animals has never been this easy!

When Will The Update Be Released
The first part of the Caves & Cliffs update will be released Tuesday 8 June.
While a specific time has not yet been revealed for when everything will be going live, it is expected to be released at around 3pm BST, based on when previous patches and updates have been released.
In order to give players the best update possible, Minecraft announced that it would be splitting Caves & Cliffs into two parts.
In the FAQ section of the Minecraft website explains: To ship the full Caves & Cliffs update as planned this would have required asking our team to work overtime, and even then we may not have been able to guarantee the high level of polish our players expect.
By taking more time to deliver the update, we can confidently deliver the first part of Caves & Cliffs this summer, with the second part releasing this holiday season.
This was not an easy decision but it is the best path to ensure our team stays healthy, happy, and able to deliver awesome updates for many years to come.
A specific date has not yet been set for the second half of the update, just that it has been planned for release around the holiday season, which could be any time from October to December.

Given the nature of the split update, its easier to just list which blocks;are coming and where you can find them. The new Minecraft blocks in 1.17 are:
- Copper ore; found underground close to mine shafts
- Dripstone and Pointed Dripstone blocks found in caves
- Amethyst geodes found in caves
- Glow lichen found in caves
- Powdered snow found on mountain tops
- Deepslate found close to bedrock in the underground area
- Moss found in shipwreck chests
- Glow Berries found in mineshaft chests
- Azalea use bone meal on moss for a chance to find it
- Dripleaf plant use bone meal on moss for a chance to find it
Note that you can also find some of these items by trading emeralds with wandering traders. Outside of these new blocks, the new textures for ores will also appear in the Minecraft 1.17 update. They were redesigned due to accessibility issues for colourblind players.

There’s no date set for Part 2 of the Caves & Cliffs update, though it’s expected to arrive later in 2021. There aren’t many details about the specifics of the update, though we do know that the new biomes will be implemented when it arrives. Here’s what we know so far.
Biomes:;
- Lush Caves: This biome adds lots of colour to underground areas and are full of green-covered blocks and glow berries. You’ll be able to find the Lush Caves by looking for the Azalea Trees that grow above them in the overworld.;
- Dripstone Cave: The second biome is less colourful than Lush Caves and adds stalagmites and stalactites instead of being completely composed of Minecraft’s usual blocks. Just be careful not to fall into a pit of stalagmites!
- Deep Dark: This biome isn’t for the faint-hearted. If any lights in the cave start going dim, you might want to make a hasty retreat as that’s a sign that the scary new Warden mob is nearby. Skulk Sensors generate here as well.
Creatures:;
- Warden: These terrifying new mobs live deep underground and respond to movement and vibrations. You’ll want to avoid them as they deal tons of damage and have a high health pool.;

- Skulk Block/Sensor: These are found deep underground in the Warden’s terrain. They are set off by sounds and vibrations and will emit a Redstone signal when triggered.

Update 117 Release Date
While the release date has been set for the first part on June 8th, we still don’t know when the second will come. This being said, we were told that Caves and Cliffs part 1 will arrive in the Summer, while part 2 will arrive around the holiday season.
Given how long it was between the announcement of the Nether Update and its release, Minecraft players were ready to wait a while for the next big update to the game, and we finally have a release date window for when content arrives.
