How The Minecraft Coordinates Work

Like any three-dimensional space, Minecraft has three coordinates, X, Y, and Z. With these three you can accurately pinpoint the exact location of any particular cube in the Minecraft world. Here is what each of these three coordinates determines.

  • The X coordinate determines your East/West position on the map. If the value is positive, it means that the position in question is East of the central part of the map. The negative value determines a position in the West.
  • The Y coordinate determines your vertical position on the map. The more you move upwards, the more the positive value will increase. Alternatively, the more you go towards bedrock, the value will decrease.; Sea level will always be at Y=64.
  • The Z coordinate determines your South/North map position. As you shift your position to the South, the positive value will increase. Go North and the numbers will turn negative.
  • There are two types of coordinate positions: the absolute position and the relative position.

  • The absolute coordinate represents a specific location in Minecraft. If you see numbers 65, 239, 54, these coordinates refer to a specific location thats 65 blocks to the East, 239 blocks above the sea level, and 54 blocks South of the central point of the map.
  • The relative coordinate is written with a ~. If you see numbers ~3, ~1, ~2, this refers to a position thats 3 blocks East, 1 block upward, and 2 blocks South of your current position.
  • How To Back Up Or Replace Your World In Minecraft Realms

How to enable coordinates on Minecraft Realm

You don’t have to stick with the same World when using Minecraft Realms. If you want to start a completely new World or if you want to replace your current one with another, you can do that too. But you might want to back up your current World before doing so, otherwise you’ll lose any progress you’ve made on it.

To back up your existing World on Minecraft Realms, click the ‘Edit’ button next to your Realm world and select ‘Download World’. This will save the World to your device and you’ll be able to play it locally or re-upload it again later if you change your mind.

To replace your current World on Minecraft Realms, again click ‘Edit’ next to your Realm world and select ‘Replace World’. You will be then asked to confirm this action before being presented with a list of available worlds to replace it with. Once selected, the new world will be uploaded and you’ll be ready to go.

How To Invite Friends To Your Minecraft Realms

    The good news is that friends that you want to invite to your Realm don’t need to have the subscription to join and play with you.;

To invite friends to your Realm, click the Edit button next to your Realm world, then select ‘Members’. You should see a list of friends that you have already invited and you’ll have the option to invite more. It seems that the number of invites you can send out is almost limitless but the people that can play on your Realm simultaneously will be limited by your subscription type so either two or ten players at a time.

This is also where you’ll be able to ‘uninvite’ players if they’ve outstayed their welcome or haven’t been active for a while.

Enabling Coordinates In An Established Realm

Once a realm is online, enabling coordinates can be a bit tricky. The slower method is for the owner to hit the settings button on the realm list, which looks like a pencil, and hit “Download Map.” They can then follow the instructions above, return to the realm settings, and hit “Replace the Map” to swap it with the coordinates enabled version.

The faster method involves using Minecraft‘s console commands. In the chat, the realm owner or an operator player can type “/gamerule showcoordinates true” and coordinates will be activated. In order to turn it off, a player can write “/gamerule showcoordinates false”.

Note that Minecraft does not consider turning on coordinates cheating. If someone turns coordinates on, they can still earn achievements, and other players will still be restricted from using actual cheats.

It does feel like this process should be simpler. While it can be fun to set server side rules and keep everyone on the same page, it feels like coordinates should be something done on the client side instead of server side. Ideally, each individual player could choose whether they want coordinates, instead of it being an “all or nothing” deal.

Minecraft is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and various other platforms.

    What Are Minecraft Realms

Minecraft Realms are personal multiplayer servers that let you create a world in Minecraft and allows up to ten players of your choice to be online at the same time. You can either create a new world or add an existing world to Realms and new content is made available each month, including maps, mini-games, and character skins.

Your Realm will be online 24/7, so anyone that you’ve invited to join you will be able to play whenever they choose. And because you have full control over who can play on your Realm you can revoke access at any time it’s a safe space for younger gamers to gather and play with friends without the worry of who they may be interacting with.

Minecraft Realms is available on PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and various mobile devices, and you can access your Realm from any of these provided you have signed in with the same Minecraft account. Crossplay is also enabled, allowing you to invite friends no matter what platform they are playing on. The only thing you should be mindful of is which version you have if you’re playing on PC the Java Edition isn’t compatible with most devices.

Another point to note is that Minecraft Realms doesn’t currently support mods, aside from the packs that are included with the Realms Plus subscription , so if that’s something you care about, you may have to look for an alternative.

Edit: It Has Been Added As A World Config Option In A Recent Version

This answer will be left as-is because of historical reasons .

The Windows 10 version of Minecraft is a port of Minecraft: Pocket Edition, which unfortunately has no F3 debug screen.

Once your windows 10 game opens up, press play, then edit on the world you’d like to add coordinates on. On the first page that is opened it will say “Show Coordinates” and turn it on.

If you’re using the windows-10 edition of minecraft, it might be as simple as they haven’t added that feature of the game to it yet . Usually, the default key for displaying the coords and other info is ‘F3’.

This could also be an issue with your controls not being set to display the debug overlay in-game. If this is the case, it’s a tiny bit more in-depth. type %appdata% into windows file explorer navigation bar and press ENTER. open the .minecraft folder and open options.txt with notepad application. after this, locate the entry that says “Key_Debug Key:” and set its value to 68 . Make sure to SAVE the file after you close it. Relaunch minecraft and go into your world and it will let you press F3 button and open the debug menu to get your coords.

This how to was based off of my knowledge of the original minecraft client acquired from minecraft.net

With the windows 10 edition, you have go to the Run program on your computer, type in %appdata% then click on the .minecraft folder scroll down until you see options.txt.

How To Set Up Minecraft Realms

Minecraft Realms: How to Turn On Coordinates

If you want to start from scratch and create a new world in Realms, go ahead and start setting up the world as you want it, with difficulty, mode , along with any other customisations you want to add. Once you’re happy with your settings, you should look for the ‘Create on Realms’ button, just to the right of the default ‘Create’ option. You’ll then be given the option of a 10-player Realm or a 2-player Realm. Once you’ve accepted the Terms and Conditions and finalised the transaction, you’ll be able to access your new Realm and Marketplace goodies if you selected the 10-player option straight away.

Minecraft Realms is charged on a month-to-month basis so if you find that you and your friends don’t get as much use out of it as you’d hoped, you can cancel at any time by visiting the subscription section of Microsoft’s website.

How To Show Coordinates In Java

If you’re playing on Java, then you don’t really have a neat way to show coordinates on your screen without implementing a mod. Yes, you can see them easily, but you won’t want them to remain on the screen while you play because your screen will be covered in text!

To show coordinates in Minecraft’s Java version all you need to do is press F3 on a PC. If you’re on a MAC then you’ll either want to try Fn + F3 or Alt + Fn + F3! In some of the newer laptops the first set of keys hasn’t been working. Here is what you’ll see once you’ve hit the right buttons:

As you can see, you’ll have a whole lot of information on your screen. I’ve outlined the coordinates part in purple where you’ll want to look to get your location. As you can see, there’s an XYZ section and a Block section. XYZ tells you the exact coordinates of where you are, whereas Block rounds the numbers so they are a little less precise. It’s easier to rattle off the Block numbers if you’re trying to tell someone where you are.

If you want a cleaner way to display coordinates in Java, then you’re going to need to turn to mods. One particular mod I like to use is Xaero’s Minimap, which will display a small map on your screen, and you can enable it to show coordinates! Be sure to check out some other great add-ons in our Minecraft 1.16 Mods post!

How To Turn On Coordinates In Your Minecraft Realm

If your Realm is already live then adding coordinates is a simple task. You must be either an owner or operator of the Realm, but you can enable coordinates via the in-game console commands. To enable coordinates, open up your chat and type in the following command:

    • /gamerule showcoordinates true

Doing so will immediately enable coordinates for the Realm. If you are looking to turn the coordinates back off you can do so by entering:

    • /gamerule showcoordinates false

If the map you plan on uploading to Realms is still offline the process is slightly different. You just need to make sure you enable coordinates through the World Settings subsection of the menu before you upload your Realm.

It should also be noted that enabling coordinates in a Realm will still allow you to earn Achievements. It is not considered a cheat and does not allow others to enable cheats within the Realm. Hopefully, your new ability to find where everything is will leave you tickled pink .
