How To Make A Piston And A Sticky Piston In Minecraft

If youve ever messed around with Redstone or traps in Minecraft, youve probably encountered dealing with either piston or a sticky piston. These two items can used in some very clever ways, all you need is a ton of Redstone and some ingenuity. Pistons in Minecraft are blocks that can push other blocks or pull them, if they are of the sticky variety. Often these are used as time interrupts within Redstone circuits or other interesting applications.

Gathering most of the resources is pretty simple. To make a Piston, you need to gather the following materials. You may use oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, or warped wood planks for the wood.

  • 3 Wood Planks of any variety
  • 4 Cobblestone
  • 1 Iron Ingot
  • 1 Redstone Dust

The wooden planks are found by breaking down a block from a tree and crafting that into four planks. Cobblestone can be gathered by breaking stone using a pickaxe that does not have Silk Touch. Redstone dust is gathered from breaking down a redstone ore block with an iron pickaxe or better.

One of the trickier parts is getting the resources for a piston and a sticky piston in Minecraft is the Slime Balls you need for the Sticky version. You need 1 Slime Ball per Sticky Piston, so that means hunting Slimes. Hunting Slimes means going underground. They will only spawn below level 40 and appear 24 blocks away from any player. They can be found as a rare spawn in Swamp biomes, but thats a pretty unreliable method.

What Is A Piston

A Piston pushes blocks, players, and mobs in a direction when given a Redstone pulse and were introduced in Patch 1.7. The Piston has a push strength of 12 blocks, if it goes beyond that limit it doesnt push. A piston will only push, it cannot pull like the Sticky Piston. The Piston is a Transparent Block, Which means it will not power other blocks around it. The Piston is a component for crafting the Sticky Piston by crafting a Slime Ball with a Piston. To Craft a Piston, you can use any kind of Wooden Planks but you need Cobblestone, not Blackstone. Honestly, you should be able to craft a Piston with Blackstone but it is deemed intentional by the Devs.

How To Craft And Use Pistons – Minecraft Block Guide

Youll need the following materials to craft a piston:

    • 4 Cobblestone
    • 3 Wood Planks
    • 1 Iron Ingot

To make a piston in Minecraft, go over to your Crafting Table and place the above materials in the following positions on the 3×3 grid. That means your wood planks go along the top row, the Iron Ingot goes in the middle space, and the Redstone Dust goes beneath it. The four cobblestones go in the remaining four spaces.

Sometimes, you may need multiple pistons to be able to complete your project. Fortunately, the materials required to make a piston are incredibly common so you shouldnt have much difficulty duplicating the process above.

How To Make A Sticky Piston

Now that you have a normal piston if you want you can make a sticky piston. You only need one ball of slime . You can find Smiles near the swamps and in the caves. These creatures are hostile. For each Smile you receive a block and, in turn, with one block you can craft 9 Smile balls.

Finally, on the workbench you have to put a Smile ball and the piston to make a sticky piston . It is done! It has not been an easy job. Well, it’s not that difficult either, more than anything it requires spending some time gathering the materials.

    How To Place Pistons

Place the piston in your hotbar, then right-click with the piston in your hand to place it on the ground or against another block. When placing a piston, the head will always face you no matter where you aim your crosshair. This can cause some tricky building, but at least you have a constant idea, unlike stairs, of how the piston will sit.

  • I don’t know if this doesn’t make any sense but I think that it would be nice to have pistons that behave in a normal way like the bedrock ones .

  • Maybe you make it with honey blocks, so it’s not SUPER cheap

  • It should be a separate/different piston, because as it stands now, slime is apparently intended to stick to honey , and intended to not stick to honey . Their own internal logic behind the behavior is complete nonsense and paradoxical, because they put the technical community at way too high of a priority. At least with a separate honey piston, the internal logic can be sound and sensible, while also not rendering the behavior completely pointless/useless to the technical community.

How Can You Activate A Piston Array From Below

I’m looking to make a large round table which would come up from the floor when activated by pistons.

I’ve attached an image to show exactly what I’m doing. I’ve tried putting blocks underneath attached to my red stone torch and wiring it up but I cant get to the middle blocks. It would be nice to find one method that can be laid out and activated so that the blocks above are activated.

    Hope that makes sense!

You have to do it in three dimensions, with multiple layers. You need one layer of circuitry for each ring of the table. Since you have a table that has three rings, you need three sets of circuits that generate the right signal in the right pattern. Each ring after the first needs to be down a layer so there’s room to do the wiring, and then you have to carry the signal upward with vertical redstone torch connections.

This is an overview shot of a working implementation that I just made:

And here’s a long view of the wiring layers:

The first set of torches are the activation torches for the pistons. Each ring of torches is toggled on by wiring, so they have torches below them to keep them off until the switch is thrown.

The second set of torches from the top are part of the out ring’s circuitry. The repeater ring around the second layer of torches turns them off, which turns the redstone torches in the layer above on, which activates the outer ring of pistons. The repeaters are hooked up directly to the main switch.

Are There Pistons In Minecraft Xbox 360

Pistons are blocks that will push other blocks one block in any direction when given a Redstone signal they can push up to 12 blocks. Unlike Sticky Pistons, however, they cannot pull blocks back towards them and requires either another piston to push it back or break the block. Piston Stackable? Yes.
