When crafting with wood planks, you can use any kind of wood planks, such as , , , , , , , or planks. In our example, we are using oak planks.

When making a piston, it is important that the wood planks, cobblestones, iron ingot, and redstone dust are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 3 wood planks. In the second row, there should be 1 cobblestone in the first box, 1 iron ingot in the second box, and 1 cobblestone in the third box. In the third row, there should be 1 cobblestone in the first box, 1 redstone dust in the second box, and 1 cobblestone in the third box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a piston.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the piston will appear in the box to the right.

How To Place Pistons

Place the piston in your hotbar, then right-click with the piston in your hand to place it on the ground or against another block. When placing a piston, the head will always face you no matter where you aim your crosshair. This can cause some tricky building, but at least you have a constant idea, unlike stairs, of how the piston will sit.

The Piston And Sticky Piston Recipe

Now that you have all your resources find a crafting table. On Bedrock, you can find the piston in the mechanical tab. Once you make that, you can then add the slime to make a sticky piston. In Java, the piston recipe will require you to put the three planks in the top three slots, the four cobblestones in the slots below the planks on the left and right, the iron ingot in the middle, and the redstone dust in the bottom middle slot.

Move your cursor to the slot on the right and move it to your inventory, and you have a piston. If you want a sticky piston, put the piston in the middle slot and the slime ball in the top middle slot.

How to Make Pistons/Sticky Pistons in Minecraft

Making a secret door in Minecraft Bedrock is not much different from making it in the Java Edition. The easiest method of creating a hidden door is by using a painting. Follow the steps below:

  • Make a doorway in a chosen wall.
  • Place two Signs inside the entrance, one on each side.
  • Hang a painting large enough to conceal the doorway on your wall. You can now walk through the painting as if you were a ghost.
  • Unfortunately, the painting doesnt keep your belongings hidden from players familiar with the trick. For better protection, you can make a secret door activated by an Item Frame. Heres how to do that:

  • Find a wall to create your door. Make sure there is some space left behind the wall for your secret room.
  • Hang an Item Frame on the wall and place an item of your choice inside it.
  • Create a doorway in the chosen wall.
  • Place a Sticky Piston facing the wall two blocks away from the hole, on the opposite side of the wall.
  • Add a block matching your wall to the sticky part of the Sticky Piston.
  • Make a Redstone pathway from the Sticky Piston block to the opposite side of your Item Frame block. Leave a one-block empty space between the line of Redstone and the Item Frames opposite side.
  • Add a Redstone Comparator between the Redstone pathway and your Item Frame block. The arrow on the Redstone Comparator should be facing the wall.
  • Place a Redstone Repeater about halfway through on your Redstone pathway.
  • The mechanism will be activated when you take the item from the Item Frame.

Q What Blocks Can Pistons Not Push

In the current state of the game, pistons are unable to push: barriers, beacons, bedrock, campfire blocks, command blocks, obsidian, enchantment tables, end portals, ender chests, jukeboxes, lodestone, other pistons, spawners, barrels, beehives/nests, furnaces, droppers, chests, lecterns, hoppers, droppers, brewing stands & dispensers.

    How Sticky Pistons Work

Usually, when a Piston pushes a block, that block stays where it is pushed, even when the Piston retracts. However, a Sticky Piston will push the block in front of it as well as pull it when the head of the Sticky Piston retracts. As such, Sticky Pistons can be useful in contraptions that need things to move back and forth.

The Sticky Piston is similar to the piston, in the sense that it pushes the block in the direction of the head, but it can also pull back the block that is connected to the head.

The regular Piston can only push the block away but cannot pull the block back in. However, the first block connected to the Sticky Piston in Minecraft will move with the head, i.e., it pushes and pulls. But the block connected to the first block can only be pushed just like a Piston.

Sticky Pistons can generate inside Jungle Temples in the game and there are only 3 available in each.

Sticky Pistons are operated with Redstone power and operates on ticks of the power. Ticks are the pulse of the power that circulates within the circuit. Shorter Ticks can make the Sticky Piston head faster and sometimes drop the first block instead of pulling it back.

    Slime Blocks And Honey Blocks

    A B

When a slime block is pushed or pulled by a piston, while moving, adjacent blocks also move with the slime block, unless a non-piston movable block stops the blocks that are “grabbed” by the slime blocks. These blocks may in turn push other blocks, not just the blocks in the line in front of the piston. For example, a slime block sitting on the ground attempts to move the ground block underneath itself, which in turn has to push additional ground blocks in the direction of motion just as if it were being pushed directly by a piston.

Glazed terracotta is an exception it does not move when adjacent slime blocks are moved.

The same occurs when a slime block is moved by an adjacent Slime Block. For example, a 2×2×2 cube of Slime Blocks may be pushed or pulled as a unit by a single piston acting on any of the blocks in the cube.

A slime block adjacent to a block that cannot be moved by pistons ignores the immobile block. But if an adjacent block could be moved but is prevented by the presence of an immobile block, the slime block is prevented from moving.

Slime blocks are not pulled by a non-sticky piston, nor are they moved if an adjacent block is moved by a piston.

The maximum of 12 blocks moved by a piston still applies. For example, a 2×2×3 collection of Slime Blocks may be pushed or pulled by a sticky piston as long as no other movable blocks are adjacent to it.

The same happens for the honey block, but it does not stick to slime blocks.

How to Make Sticky Pistons in Minecraft

I’m pretty new to messing around with redstone and I have concocted a pretty simple hidden door with sticky pistons, as shown here:

It works fine, pull the lever and the pistons pull the blocks back. Moving forward, however, I would like to somehow implement a way for me to close the hidden door behind me, ideally working so that I could also open them from the inside for maximum stealth. Here is a shot of the circuitry:

    • You should use a redstone repeater, it allows you to delay the flow of a redstone signal if you wanted to use a button for example Alfie GoodacreDec 16, 2016 at 17:08
    • update! I added a connecting fuse with a lever within the inside and that gets the job done i m still open to more graceful ideas, of course.

You can use a button or pressure plate to send a pulse of power, rather than a lever that will stay on once flipped.

Walk in when the door is open and it will close behind you. You can use repeaters to adjust pulse length and delay. Put a similar button on the inside for exiting. A bonus of this is that a stone button placed on a stone block blends in well.

I just built a little example setup for you. My example includes a solution with pressure plates to control the sticky pistons. Please see the following printscreens:

This shows a basic setup to build a door with sticky pistons.

Of course you can also use a button which also brings a little delay with it. If you need more time add some redstone repeaters to your circuit.

How Do I Reverse The Activation Of Pistons With Redstone Automatically

So basically, I want to make a hidden Piston door using Redstone that opens and shuts when I pull a lever.

As you can see, the door consists out of 14 sticky Pistons in total : 2 for the stairs, 4 in the middle to pull back and push out the stone in/outwards, and 4 on each side to pull back and push out the pistons with the stone. I’m going to call them S, M, L and R. I have ways and means to power each of those groups individually and with repeaters I can change when they activate.

For opening and closing the door, I’m using levers on both sides of the door combined with and XOR gate underground, so that the door will close/open no matter what lever I use or in what state the other lever is.

The basic order here is: When the door opens, M pulls the stone blocks back, after that L and R pull these pistons with the stone in the wall. When it closes, the order is reversed: L and R push M out, M then pushes the stone blocks. S here doesnt matter, since it doesn’t interfere with the others.

The problem here is : How do I REVERSE the order of activation for the components L, R and M for when it closes and shuts? So Opening : M, L+R | Closing : L+R, MOr: Do you know a different way to make this work?

Because of the way the door works, simply executing the same order will break the door :M won’t retract at the right time and will simply stay in the ‘closed’ position and will retract and extend, but not be moved by L and R.

Sorry for the length of this and thanks in advance.

    Using Pistons In Redstone Circuits

Using Redstone Dust to make lines on the ground will let you create a circuit. A simple Redstone circuit can be a single line of Redstone Dust connecting a Piston to a power source. A highly recommended power source for toggling the active and inactive states of a Piston is a Lever. Placing the Lever at the end of a simple circuit as mentioned will let you use your Piston with ease. Flipping the Lever once will extend the head while flipping the Lever again will retract the head.

Players must also make sure the light level is below seven. Slimes do not spawn in swamp biomes at higher light levels.

What Are Pistons Used For In Minecraft

Pistons are a block type that can push movable blocks, players and mobs when given a Redstone pulse.

As a result, they can be used to help automate processes. For example, its possible to build an automatic farm where pistons are used to release water, harvesting your planted crops on the soil and watering the soil ready for more crops to be replanted.

They can also be used to make a Dragon Egg for those wanting to dabble in endgame content. Oh, and if youre feeling really adventurous you can make a flying machine.

Finally, pistons can be used to make sticky pistons, which are also required for the flying machine.
