Getting Started With Unicorn Hat
If you’re here, you’ve either bought a Unicorn Hat or are thinking of picking one up. No doubt the lure of the searingly-bright LEDs has captivated you, and you’re interested in incorporating this easy-to-use display into your project, or just learning a little from it.
We call it Unicorn Hat because it does rainbows, really bright rainbows, but that’s not the limit of its ability. Unicorn Hat is a chain of 64 super clever LEDs known as ws2812s which have built-in intelligence. Each ws2812 LED is capable of understanding a signal that’s a little like morse-code. This signal tells it what colour to be by giving it Red, Green and Blue values. Once it’s got a colour, it’ll pass all the other colour commands along to its neighbour. This happens one LED after the other until the whole chain is lit up, and it happens so quickly you can’t even see it happening.
All this is done with just one pin from the Raspberry Pi, and we’ve wrapped up the particulars into an easy-to-use Python module so all you have to worry about is setting the colour you want each pixel to be.
You’ll come across Red, Blue and Green colour codes a lot in programming. They’re a standard way to represent nearly 17 million colours with three numbers from 0-255. Understanding how they work, and how to find or generate a particular colour, is key to using Unicorn Hat. You’ll learn more about this later.
The Ultimate Unicorn Mod
The Ultimate Unicorn Mod adds many new species of Unicorns and flying horses. They come packed with magical abilities that become even more complex when you introduce armor and accessories. They may be rare to come across but youll definitely want to keep an eye out and tame a few.
The Unicorn on its own can be tamed with Golden Apples and can charge with its horn by pressing f. But when you add a slotted horse helm with a magic wand, youll unlock magical abilities like fire and lightning conjuring.
The Pegasus, Nightmare and Destrier are rarer beasts but will ultimately mean more power for you if you should tame any of them. Pegasus and Nightmare can be flown and the Destrier is significantly larger than normal horses with a powerful stride.
The armor slots of the new horses allow you to add more than just the helm. You can add horseshoes for extra power or the ability to ice over water. The wingtip slot will allow you to reinforce the tips of wings for attacks done by hitting c.
Where To Find Them
If you find a mooshroom island, chances are, if it’s very dark, you might might, find a unicorn on top of a mushroom. I don’t know why. Seemed like a good idea at the time! The butterflies you can find in Plains, Sunflower Plains, Flower Fields and, of course, mooshroom islands.

Unicorn Horns And Wings
You can enchant golden carrots to get unicorn horns which then you surround an elytra with feathers in the crafting table. Once you make the wings and horn put them into a crafting table and get a unicorn mutator in which you apply to horses in the saddle slot allowing flight.
*If you bring your unicorn into the nether it becomes a fiery unicorn which can shoot fire when you attack
*If you bring it to the end it becomes a dark unicorn which can teleport away from incoming long-range attacks and summon an enderman which attacks any threat to you
*Unicorns don’t need leads or pens they follow you and would never run away
*There is also 1 castle in each dimension with its respective unicorn
*If you bring the fiery or dark unicorns to another dimension they stay the same
*With a special unicorn mobs that normally only attack provoked, attack you unprovoked too

Unicorn Hat is easy to set up. We’ve created a one-liner to get everything installed.
With Step 2 above in mind, fire up the Terminal and enter the following command:
curl https://get.pimoroni.com/unicornhat | bash
This command downloads an install script from the internet, which should then run automatically through all the steps required to get Unicorn Hat installed and working.
Note: Unicorn Paint is only supported in Python 2.x!
During installation, you’ll be asked if you want to install Flask for Unicorn Paint. It’s up to you, but I’d recommend it! Unicorn Paint is fun.
