Begin by digging into the wall, in any direction, 20 blocks deep. Be sure you are digging horizontally, not vertically. This will be your first branch.

Now dig anywhere from 2-5 blocks to the right or left and dig 20 blocks deep again.

You can get up to 4 diamonds with a single diamond ore block, for example. This is a late-game upgrade, but it’s incredibly useful to increase your yield and make mining much more efficient.

Survive Mining The Area In Survival Mode

Have students conduct research on what was needed to survive the mining days in California. For example, water, homes, agriculture, etc.

The goal for the students is to mine as much gold while surviving only in a small area . Students should put together a Survival Guide prior to beginning their Minecraft play. You can use the Gold Mine Worksheet, or design one of your own. There should be references based on informational text for each survival guide.

Give students one entire class period to survive living as a miner. Students should switch into Survival Mode and explore the mountain, creating mines and towns that can prosper if the mountain has enough gold. If the students player dies, they must abandon their mine and can join another persons mountain to help.

Lead a class discussion on why certain people were able to survive and why certain people found more gold than others. Discuss how preparation and randomness affect how some students fair better than others.

Gold Pickaxe Should Break Gold

In Minecraft, you can use an iron pickaxe to break iron ore. You can use a diamond pickaxe to break diamond ore. You can also use a netherite pickaxe to break ancient debris. But you can’t use a gold pickaxe to break gold ore. This makes no sense! I get that a gold pickaxe can’t break more valuable or harder blocks, but it should be able to break gold-related blocks since it is made out of gold. Please change this in Minecraft because it does not line up with other pickaxes and makes no sense.
