Minecraft Game Modes Explained

I went Creative Mode in Minecraft..

Although you selected a game mode when you first built your Minecraft world, you can switch to a different mode at any time. An exception is the Hardcore setting, which can only be chosen from the beginning and cannot be changed.

There are five game modes in Minecraft:

  • Survival: The standard game mode where you start from scratch with no resources. You have limited health, and to survive, you must keep your hunger bar filled.
  • Creative: Play with unlimited health and access to all resources. You can destroy any block with one strike, and you can fly .
  • Adventure: Blocks cannot be placed or destroyed. You still have a health bar and a hunger bar.
  • Spectator: Observe your world without actively participating in the game. You can fly through objects in this mode, but you can’t interact with anything.
  • Hardcore: This mode locks the game at the greatest difficulty. Players have just one life and take more damage from enemies.

Spectator and Hardcore modes are only available in the Java Edition for PC. Adventure mode isn’t available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, or Windows 10.

Using The Creative Mode Inventory

Minecrafts resources fall into several primary categories. Some of them are a natural early focus as you improve your position from those gathered for first-night survival others come into more focus as you get further through the game, gear up for your exploration of The Nether and The End dimensions and start to become more creative with all that Minecraft has to offer. Heres a quick summary of the different categories. You can view all possible tools and resources by opening your inventory in Creative mode, as shown in . The categories that follow correspond to the tabs running across the upper and lower sections of the Creative mode inventory.

Creative mode inventory provides access to the full set of resources and tools.

TIP: Turn On Cheats

Turn on cheats when you start a new world to quickly jump between different gameplay modes. Type /gamemode creative and /gamemode survival to move between the main types.

How To Duplicate Groups Of Blocks

If what you wanted to do is duplicate groups of blocks, the best way to do it is by using a third party software or a dedicated Minecraft mod or plugin.

MCEdit was considered one of the best, if not the best, open source Minecraft map editor. You can still use it for many different kinds of editing on a Minecraft saved map such as:

  • generate terrain
  • putting together sections of different worlds to create something new

and much more. Unfortunately though, it doesnt work on maps from versions after the 1.13 patch . If you want to know more about this topic, you can check Best MCEdit alternatives in 2022.

Changing The Game Mode

The first test world is a survival world. Lets take a look at the values we need to change in order to set it permanently to creative mode. Select the name of your world, in our case NBT Test and expand it. Within the directory youll see multiple entries. The which contains the world rules is the level.dat entry at the bottom of the list.

Expand the level.dat entry and click on Data. Within that data list youll find an entry labeled GameType. Although you can use keywords like creative or c to change modes when using the /gamemode command in the game, the GameType value must be set using a numeric value. Here are the values you can use:

0 Survival

Why Do I Want To Do This

When you create a new world you select your game mode. You can choose from creative, survival, and hardcore modes. Under normal circumstances this selection is fixed and a permanent flag is set within the world file.

Minecraft lends itself to creativity and changing playstyles, however, and you may find that the map you intended to make a creative map feels like it would be a perfect survival map or vice versa. Or perhaps you want to start in creative mode to build your home base and then switch to survival mode to take on the world from the comfort of your freshly built castle.

Whatever your motivation for changing the world type, its a pretty straight forward process. Lets look at two techniques, one temporary and one permanent, you can use to change game modes.

How To Switch From Survival To Creative Mode In Minecraft 119 Update

How to Change from Survival Mode to Creative Mode in Minecraft

The Minecraft 1.19 update changed a lot of aspects of the game. Now, there’s a recovery compass, two new biomes, and an insanely difficult mob. Players who stopped playing and started again after 1.19 will notice many significant differences.

However, it did not change any fundamental aspect of the title. The premise is the same, the gameplay is largely the same, and, most of all, the game modes are the same.

There are three main modes in Minecraft: Adventure, Survival, and Creative, with the latter two being the most popular as they are used a lot.

Make A Spooky Minecraft Dungeon

Create a spooky dungeon and challenge your friends to conquer it. You can add mobs, puzzles, parkour, redstone traps, and more to your dungeon. Dont forget about lore and loot. Go getem, dungeon master.

The Maze: Build a maze into your dungeon. Be sure to include some windy hallways as well as larger rooms that lead in several directions. Make sure to add a little bit of flavor and decor too.
The Secret Passage: Build a piston door and attach it to a lever, pressure plate, or button. Repeaters can delay the signal, turning that part of the dungeon into a timed challenge.
The Item Unlock: Pick a special item that will unlock the dungeon. It could be an item that will activate some redstone, like an arrow that will press a button on the wall. Hide the item in the dungeon and design your dungeon so you need the item to get out.

The Purpose Of Cheats

Allowing cheats in your new world will allow you to change game modes later on, in case you plan on playing in Survival mode in the future having a strictly Creative mode world without cheats enabled will limit that world to Creative mode.

There are numerous cheats available. To change your game mode to Creative, for example, you can type /gamemodecreative or /gamemode 1. To change your game mode back to Survival, just type /gamemode 0 or /gamemode survival.

How To Duplicate Items In Creative Mode With The Mouse Wheel

    Minecraft: Creative Mode! – Beta 1.8 Pre-Release!

Starting from the Survival mode, lets say that you want to duplicate a valuable item that you just acquired, like the Smite enchanted Diamond Sword in the example below.

First of all, you need to switch to Creative mode. To do so, open the commands and type:

    /gamemode creative

If cheats are not allowed in your world, there is a workaround. You can check here how to still use cheats in that Minecraft world. Once in Creative mode, open the inventory and hover the mouse on the item that you want to duplicate.

Then click with the mouse wheel.

As you can see, now you will have the maximum stash of the same item for you to place in your inventory. In this example the maximum amount is 1, because that is the Swords maximum stash . If we do the same for a block of Dirt instead, we will end up with 64 more blocks:

How To Duplicate Minecraft Items In Creative Mode

This is the quikest way to do it, but it obviously works only if you are playing from a pc with a mouse with wheel. What Does Multiplayer Lan Mean

    Play Minecraft In Creative Mode

When you open your singleplayer world to LAN, you are essentially opening it for other players to join, but only other people on your network. That means that only someone using your internet connection with access to Minecraft can join your world. You do not have to worry about strangers popping into your game unless you are on a large network, such as a school or university connection.

If none of this is an issue, it is a useful way to enable cheats in your singleplayer world and switch your current game mode. Remember to switch your game mode back before exiting your LAN connection!

The inventory in Creative mode shows all building blocks and items available in-game.
