Once Youve Found A Geode

What Is The Amethyst & What Can It Do? Minecraft Bedrock (MCPE/Xbox/PS4/Switch/Windows10)

When you do manage to locate a geode, theres a good chance that there will be a crack in its exterior somewhere through which you may enter. If there is no crack, or its not exposed in the direction youre trying to enter, youll have to mine your way in to get at the amethyst. Make sure youre using a pickaxe to ensure what you mine drops as a block rather than simply breaking. The outermost layer is smooth basalt, a cool new dark-colored block that should add some extra detail to those moody builds.

Just inside the basalt is calcite, a new light-colored block that can only be found inside geodes and in strips in the stony peaks biome. As it stands this block is purely decorative, but Minecraft is always changing and you never know when blocks like this will be given a new purpose. Also, as it has no infinite generation mechanic meaning calcite is a finite material in the game, making it a valuable commodity.

Finally, inside the calcite, youll find your amethyst blocks and budding amethyst, with amethyst buds and amethyst clusters scattered throughout on the various surfaces. It wont hurt you at all to mine up all the amethyst blocks, amethyst buds, and amethyst clusters you find inside the geode. Be sure to use a silk touch pick on the amethyst buds or they will drop nothing when broken.

Amethyst Shards Different Crafting Recipes

Amethyst shards have 3 different crafting recipes.

  • The first is 4 Amethystshards can be crafted into a block of amethyst. However, a block of amethyst cannot be crafted back into 4 amethyst shards. So this isnt a good way of storing amethyst charts.
  • The second is to copper in gets and an amethyst shark can be crafted into a Spyglass. Copper or is as common as iron ore. It can be found from sea level down to bedrock. It has to be mined by a pickaxe or better. The spyglass one used will allow you to zoom in the default field of vision in the game is 70.The spyglass will take 110 of this, so it will give you a field of vision of 7.The spyglass will also slow down your walking speed when youre using it.
  • The last crafting recipe is for amateurs shards and glass can be crafted into 2 tinted glass. The tinted glass will block light but still be transparent. This could be useful for some farms, like mob and mushrooms as they rely on a low light level. This will allow you to keep a farm dark and be able to see into it.

Crafting With Amethyst In Minecraft

There are currently three crafting recipes which require amethysts as ingredients:

  • Block of Amethyst: A decorative block made from four amethyst shards. Basically you’re sticking a bunch of shards back together to recreate the interior layer of the geode. Nice if you want to recreate a geode cave for aesthetic purposes .
  • Tinted Glass: Combining four amethyst shards with one piece of glass yields two tinted glass blocks. These are visually opaque but behave in-game as though they are completely light-proof. They are not airtight, unlike regular glass.
  • Spyglass: Combining an amethyst shard with two copper ingots creates a Spyglass. This item can be used to view and zoom in on far-away locations. There are three Advancements associated with this item, granted for looking at a Parrot, a Ghast, and an Ender Dragon through the spyglass.

Minecraft: Breaking Down Amethyst Uses

Though Amethyst can only be used to craft a few creations in Minecraft at the moment, it’s still worth taking a look into the functions of those individual items for further reference.

A breakdown of the functions of Amethyst blocks, Spyglasses, and tinted glass in Minecraft can be found below:

Amethyst blocks

  • Used primarily for decoration.
  • Crafted using Amethyst shards. Place the shards in a 2×2 square in a crafting menu in order to produce the block.
  • When broken with a pickaxe, the block itself will drop. If broken by any other means, the block will be destroyed without dropping anything.
  • Can also be found naturally within geodes accompanying smooth basalt and calcite blocks.
  • Makes a unique sound compared to other blocks when interacted with which is much softer compared to other decorative blocks.

Tinted glass

  • A visually transparent block that can be seen through while also blocking out light.
  • Unlike standard glass, tinted glass will drop as a block when broken by any tool or by hand, giving it more reusability.
  • Much like a standard opaque block in Minecraft, tinted glass will completely block light from passing through it.
  • Similar to standard glass, mobs will not suffocate if they are encased in tinted glass.
  • Crafted using a cross pattern of Amethyst shards with a piece of glass at the center of a crafting menu grid.

Easiest Ways To Farm Amethyst In Minecraft

How does Amethyst work in Minecraft?

Amethyst spawns from 0 to 70 in Minecraft, making the game rather popular. However, players that dig straight down to find amethyst are not recommended. Try one of these approaches instead:

  • Build a mine: Carve your way into the underground down to level 12 or lower. This level offers a chance of getting not only Amethyst, but also Gold, Diamonds, Lapis Lazuli, Redstone, and more. You can speed up your mining process using minecarts.
  • Explore the surroundings: Amethysts geodes do spawn inside caves and ravines. Locate these in your world to skip the digging.
  • Visit the ocean: Amethyst can be found partially revealed on beaches or underwater.

Beware of my amethyst clusters when you are in the geode. Look for the mature amethyst buds growing on blocks of budding amethyst. When mined with a pickax, they should drop shards. No amethyst cluster will continue to grow if you mine the whole block. Mark the geodes to cultivate Amethyst later instead.

Make sure you have Fortune in a pickax.. At level 3 Fortune, from a single cluster you can get up to 16 amethyst shards. It took longer to build an autonomous farm and was not so effective, as only two shards were dropped by a cluster when a piston was broken.

How Long Does Amethyst Take To Grow In Minecraft

It doesnt take too long.

When youre looking to collect Amethyst shards in Minecraft, you want to seek out the Amethyst geodes buried underground. These locations are surrounded by a layer of smooth basalt, calcite, and right in the middle is an area full of Amethyst blocks and bud Amethyst blocks. On the bud Amethyst blocks, youre going to growing Amethyst crystals. When theyre fully grown, they become Amethyst clusters that you can harvest to collect several shards to use on a handful of crafting projects.

There are two primary stages the growing Amethyst goes through, and they all happen on top of the budding Amethyst blocks, which are different than a regular Amethyst block. A budding Amethyst block wont have any distinct cracks in the center, whereas the budding one has a distinct shattered pattern.

An Amethyst bud can only grow from the ones with cracks. When it does, it goes through three stages, starting as a small Amethyst bud, and eventually becoming a medium, and then a large. At the large stage, the next development transition is to become an Amethyst cluster, which contains all of the shards that you can mine. After you mine the cluster and you keep the budding Amethyst block there, you can return to it to mine it again once it goes through the cycle all over again.

Amethyst Geodes And Blocks Feedback

Update:Amethyst Geodes and Blocks have now released as part of Caves & Cliffs Part I.

If you want to know more about everything included in this first Caves & Cliffs release then check out the full changelog for and !

Amethyst Geodes are hollow, crystalline structures found within caves that are the unique source some of the new blocks being introduced in Caves & Cliffs Part I. Aside from containing a layer of calcite, these geodes also house an inner wall of amethyst, a brilliantly purple block that has a chance of growing buds and eventually clusters that can be mined for amethyst shards – an essential material for crafting Tinted Glass and the Spyglass.

Of course, we want to hear your feedback on these features too so let us know what you think about these features in the comments. Oh, and don’t forget to have a walk around the geodes and take in the sounds as well as the sight of the amethyst, especially if you’re a…budding musician.

Depending on the type of tool you’re using to mine the crystal in question, you’ll receive a different amount of shards.

  • Iron or lower-tier pickaxe: two amethyst shards.
  • Diamond or Netherite pickaxe: four amethyst shards.

Having a Fortune enchantment on your pickaxe is highly useful, since it increases the amount significantly, up to an average of eight shards from one crystal at Fortune III.
