What If You Dont Want To Host Your Server At Home

Hosting any kind of server from home means youre exposing your home network to the world.

If youd rather not take that risk, then you can use a hosting provider instead. Youll need to pay a monthly or annual fee, but you wont have to deal with the hassle of managing the server hardware.

A GoDaddy Virtual Private Server is a good fit if youre just getting started. Just keep in mind that youre sharing hardware with other users, so keep an eye on resource usage.

If you need a little more oomph and you want to hook up a lot of players, you might try a dedicated server instead.

Download The Minecraft Server

The first step in downloading a Minecraft server is to download the Server.jar file from the Minecraft website.

Optional: If you want an older version, you can find a list of Minecraft versions below. Be sure to click the Server jar on the version you want to make sure you have the Server.jar required for the next step.

Once on the page, click the Download Minecraft server jar link as shown.

Note: You may have a different version number than shown in the picture. This is okay as the latest version of Minecraft is constantly being updated.

Your computer may notify you that the file could be harmful to your computer. This is because any .jar file is treated as harmful when downloading in most browsers and computers. Just click Keep as this is an official Minecraft server .jar file we can trust.

Before we run this .jar file we want to create a folder for it that will hold all of the files. A common practice is to create the server folder on your desktop. To do this, go to your desktop and right click on an open space. Go to New > Folder and click to create a new empty folder.

Once it is clicked it will let you change the name of the folder, so name it something so you know it is your Minecraft Server.

Now return to your Downloads folder the same way we did earlier and right click on the Server.jar to copy it as we will paste it into the new folder we made in the next step.

Run The Server With Ngrok

  • Start Ngrok: ./ngrok tcp 25565 If you’re using a port other than the default port, update the last argument above accordingly. This works with LAN worlds too! Upon opening the world to LAN, write the port listed in the game’s chat instead of 25565 in the ngrok command.
  • Start the Minecraft server: java -jar server.jar nogui You do not need to install Java separately to run Java edition if Minecraft is already installed on your system. See Part 1 of Installing Optifine Without Java to find the path where Minecraft manages its own copy of Java.
  • Copy your public ngrok address. The address will be listed under Forwarding in the terminal window. Copy it without the tcp://. This is the address your friends will connect to when they join your server. For example, if my public ngrok address was tcp://0.tcp.ngrok.io:19565, I would instruct people to paste 0.tcp.ngrok.io:19565 into the Direct Connect box.
  • Join your server and play! Note that each time you start ngrok, your public address will change. Keep this in mind when connecting people to your server. In addition, remember to close ngrok when you stop your server.

Alternatively, you can manage/automate the startup and shutdown of the Minecraft server using a script such as the ones listed below:

Port forwarding is used when you have a router and you wish to let users connect to your server through it. If you wish to host your server for local reasons, it is not required that you do so. Keep in mind that port forwarding might cause security risks.

When port forwarding, it varies on how your router will ask you for the information. If you don’t understand on how your router wants you to input the information, try visiting PortForward.com for a tutorial.

Once you have managed to locate your router’s admin page, and find the Port Forwarding page; hit add new service or custom service. When you get a page asking to setup the new rule, it should prompt you on what you want to call it. You may name it as you wish, but for simplicity, name it “minecraft“. Then, you want to look for “type”. If “TCP/UDP” or “Both” isn’t an option you will have to create two rules for both protocols. For the ports , enter 25565. If it asks for anything else other than output IP , leave it alone and continue.

To find your computer’s IP address, use the following steps:

    Windows

Now it is time to configure and connect.

    Connecting To The Minecraft Server

    • If you are playing on the same machine on which the server is running, select the “Multiplayer” option in the game client, click direct connect, and then type in localhost instead of an IP address.
    • Both hosting and playing on the same machine is not a recommended practice unless you have a powerful computer .
  • Users within your local network can connect using your internal IP address; port forwarding is not required for such local connections. The internal IP address of a specific network adapter can be found by typing “ipconfig” into the command prompt and looking for the IPv4 address, or by using this website. If the port is set to a number other than 25565 in server.properties, that port must be included. This address will look something like 192.168.0.168:25565.
  • Users connecting from the Internet must connect using your external IP address. You must port forward for someone outside your network to connect to the server.

Point A Domain At Your Minecraft Server

Providing players with an easy-to-remember domain name instead of a complicated IP address makes it even easier for people to connect to your Minecraft server.

Its super simple: Update your domains DNS records by adding an A record for your domain , or subdomain , that points to your Minecraft servers IP address.

Note that it can take up to ~24 hours for DNS changes to take effect globally.

If youre not sure how to change DNS records,;take a look at this Help article for adding an A record.

    Into The Router Settings/port Forwarding

Now, search up the router’s IP address. Make sure there are no mistakes. You should then see a login page. To log in, find the router in your house, which would look like a box with fluctuating lights. Look around it until you find a username and password. If you don’t,… I don’t know what you’ll have to do. Maybe ask your parents. NOTE: if you have a default admin/password login, then you’ll need to trust the people you give the IP to. Use the login and log in. Find Port Forwarding. It’s probably in the advanced settings. If not, just keep looking for it. Now, add a new rule. For the IP address, put in the one of your device. For the port, you’ll need both TCP and UDP ports. Use the default Minecraft PE port, 19132. For frontier, select custom ports. For Verizon, ignore what frontier did. Finally, save the rule. Congrats, you’ve set up the server! Now, you need the right info for your friends to join.

Introduction: How To Make An Mcpe Server

First, let me explain THE ONLY WAY to make a server without any third-party application . Port forwarding is the secret. What it does is with the correct IP address of a device is set up with the real IP of your router, you can use a specific port to forward players to your world. That’s actually how PocketMine, Leet, and other great payed server apps do it, and then add plugins. Second, the server acts as a LAN server . Except, in this case, you can let people from AROUND THE WORLD to join you. Third, if the password to your router settings is password, you’ll have to trust the people you give your IP to. ‘Cause when you give them the IP, they can get into your router and mess things up, such as: changing the password, blocking your devices from joining, etc. If not, then you’ll be okay.

    Using A Vpn For Minecraft

There are a couple of things you need to get and download if you want to set up port forwarding, including:

  • A VPN like Hamachi. What this does is create a Virtual Private Network over your public network like the Internet. When you get it downloaded, and set it up what they do is give you an extra IP address that will identify you in any virtual network you try to join.
  • Once you have Hamachi or another VPN downloaded, you can then install it to make sure it is set up and running.
  • Then you want to log in to Hamachi and create a network by clicking on the responding button.
  • Create a recognizable name for your network and a good strong password.
  • The next time you are looking to play Minecraft, then you just log in and look for the network that corresponds to the one you set up. Log in using your username and password.
  • It will ask you to connect to your server, place your new IP address in there, you can get this by looking at your Hamachi settings. Now while this is only one way to start hosting Minecraft server without port forwarding, you can try some of the other ways that are available also.
  • You can also make it extra secure by buying a different modem to allow yourself to log in on.
  • Potentially your ISP will allow port forwarding, a simple way to find this out is to either:a. Give them a call,b. Or do a google search for: site:yourISPname.com port forwarding

Port forwarding is what is required to let your friends connect to your server if they are not on the same local connection. If you want to play on a server locally on the same connection this step is not required. It is important to note that port forwarding might cause security risks so make sure you follow the port forwarding steps carefully.

Every router is different when it comes to setting up port forwarding. A router is what is used to create a wireless internet connection. You need to follow the steps to reach your routers admin page as we will be port forwarding a specific port address that Minecraft will use. Go to the following link below and click on the list of all routers and find your router. Skip all ads and do not download any software on this website. Additional software is not needed for this.

When you are on your specific router page follow the steps on setting up a port forward entry. This will differ from router to router but the general steps in common with most routers will be the following.Create a static IP address

Login to your router and navigate the port forwarding section

    Create a port forward entry

This website explains each step for your specific router in depth. When you get to the step of creating a port forward entry make sure you name it something that is recognizable such as Minecraft and the port number should be 25565. The port forward website also has a very helpful explanation about port forwarding for Minecraft here.

Test The Public Ip Of The Server

Now that the port is open for communication and the settings are properly configured, run the server again by either clicking the run.bat file or running the command ./run.sh . Once the server is finished loading, you can test to see if your server works via your public IP address that you found in step #7. Voilà! You and your friends can now play on the server by entering this same public IP address into their Minecraft clients!

Server.jar file download:Download the server.jar file from the official Minecraft website. Gamers will be able to examine the server.jar file for the most recent version on the website. Make that the file is called Minecraft server. When the download is finished, open 1.XX.X.jar, where XX.X is the version number. Make a folder called Minecraft Server to store the server-related files.

A new text file named Eula will appear in the server folder after the jar has been executed. Change eula=false to eula=true in a text editor and save it. Writing A Script To Launch The Server

It’s definitely boring to have to remember the command-line options for your server every time you launch it. Luckily, we can write it down in a file and just run that instead.

    On Windows

The windows version of a script is called a batch file. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.bat”, and then right click it to edit using notepad. Paste the following in:

Double click the file to start your server. You may get a “Class_Not_Found” and ServerGuiConcole error, just ignore these errorsand you should see your “Server Thread/INFO” dialog start the server.

The “pause” command is there to keep the window open so you can read what happened after the server stops.

    On macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD

All these systems use a common scripting language called the “POSIX shell script” on the command line. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.sh” and write the following in:

    #!/bin/shcd"$"exec java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar server.jar --nogui

Now save the file. Run chmod a+x start.sh to make it executable. You can now run the file by double-clicking or by running ./start.sh in the folder .

If you want to add a pausing part like the Windows example, remove the exec word, and add a line of read -n 1 -p “Waiting…” to the end. This is useful if you are running the script by double-clicking on the GUI.
