Minecraft Nether Portal Rules

How to Make a Nether Portal in Minecraft

Nether portals have to follow these building rules:

  • The portal must be rectangular. If you want a different shape , you must use multiple rectangular portals to make the shape.
  • The smallest Minecraft nether portal size is 5×4 blocks, and the maximum size is 23×23.
  • Only obsidian can be used to construct the nether portal frame.
  • Corners are not required on the nether portal frame, you can leave air or put any block youd like in the corners.
  • Nether Portals are activated by using flint and steel to set a fire inside the frame. Nether portals cant be activated in the End.

Large Minecraft Nether Portal Designs

Bigger Nether Portals usually need to be outdoors due to their sheer size. These portals have a bit more flexibility with decorating and you can add things like a nice road leading up to the portal or some accents like statues or lava pools. A cool idea is to build with nether materials like lava, obsidian, and quartz.

Small Minecraft Nether Portal Designs

Smaller Nether Portals are usually needed for areas like caves, basements, and inside homes. Even though you are restricted with size, you can still have some cool decorations and a dedicated room for your portal. Some ideas are to include a bridge to your portal or create a room with nether decor like obsidian, fire, and lava.

Making The End Portal

Once you’ve reached the portal room, you’re almost done. For safety, fill in all the lava and destroy the monster spawner. This will prevent any unfortunate accidents.

At the top of the staircase is the broken End Portal. The portal’s entire frame is there, but a number of Eyes of Ender will be missing. Carefully fill in all the missing pegs with Eyes of Ender to activate the structure.

Once you’ve placed all the pearls, you’ll hear a loud booming sound, and darkness will fill the portal. Once you jump in, you’ll be taken to The End, and the final boss, the Ender Dragon.

Make sure you’re ready to face it before you step inside, because once you do, the only way back is by dying or winning.

Build A Nether Portal: Mine Obsidian Blocks

This is an involved process, so we grouped the instructions into four parts.

Obsidian blocks create the frame for your Nether Portal. To obtain obsidian, you need a water bucket, a diamond pickaxe, and a pool of red-hot lava!

Step 1:Equip your water bucket and gather water.

Step 2:Find a pool of lava and shower it with the water.

Step 3: Once the lavas cools, retrieve the water using the empty bucket.

Step 4:Mine the resulting obsidian using a diamond pickaxe.

How To Make A Portal To The Nether In The Survival Mode

In survival mode, you do not have obsidian blocks and a lighter on your inventory, so you will have to play a lot to get them.

For obsidian blocks, you need a diamond pickaxe. First, you will have to create a wooden pickaxe to get stone, then a stone pickaxe to get iron, then an iron pickaxe to be able to extract diamond, and finally create the diamond pickaxe that you need, by combining three diamonds on the top of the crafting table and two wooden sticks in the middle holes of the grid.

Now that you have the diamond pickaxe in hand, it is time to mine some obsidian blocks. How? The easiest way is to pour water over the lava with a bucket. Find lava in the subsoil, between layers 1 and 10 it will be easy to find it. Pour a bucket of water over the lava, it will turn into a block of obsidian. You need at least 14 blocks of this material. Get it out with your brand-new diamond pickaxe. Repeat the steps as many times as necessary to get the total amount needed.

What You’ll Need To Find An End Portal

Can you make more than 2 portals in Minecraft?

Get Ender Pearls and Blaze Powder

Firstly, you’ll need to get Ender Pearls. There are several ways to get them.

  • In “Java Edition,” expert-level cleric villagers have a 66 percent chance to trade you an Ender Pearl for 4-5 emeralds. In “Bedrock Edition,” they’re guaranteed to offer this trade.

  • Endermen, the tall monsters that only attack when looked at, will drop Ender Pearls 25 percent of the time when killed.
  • In the Nether, Piglins the pig-like villagers that will attack you unless you’re wearing gold can give you Ender Pearls. Drop a gold ingot in front of one, and it’ll inspect it for a few moments, then give you a random item, which might be a couple of Ender Pearls. This is incredibly rare, however.

Next, you’ll need Blaze Powder.

  • Go to the Nether and kill Blazes, the flaming creatures that live in Nether Fortresses. Whenever you kill one, it has a 50 percent chance of dropping a blaze rod.
  • Placing one blaze rod into your crafting recipe will give you two units of blaze powder.
  • Craft an Eye of Ender

Eyes of Ender can be crafted by combining one Ender Pearl with one unit of Blaze Powder.

You only need one to find the stronghold, but you might need up to 12 when repairing the broken End Portal.

To find a stronghold, throw the Eye of Ender, follow, repeat

    Getting Flint And Steel

The fire starter known as Flint and Steel can sometimes be found in dungeons or Nether Fortresses. Yet, it’s much easier just to make the tool. To do so, you need a piece of Flint and a single Iron Ingot.

You can get Flint by destroying blocks of Gravel with your hand, a shovel, or for those who like fan-fare, a piece of TNT. Not every Gravel block will drop some Flint, but luckily, the blocks are not among the rarest in the game. The resource spawns underground, next to bodies of water, and in various other places. It shouldn’t take too long to discover some.

Iron, on the other hand, is found underground. You can mine the metal with a stone pickaxe. Once you do, you’ll have a block of Iron Ore, which you can smelt in a furnace to make an Ingot.

Put the Flint and Iron into your crafting grid to make Flint and Steel.

How To Activate A Nether Portal In Minecraft

Your Nether portal is now ready, and its waiting for you to activate it. To do so, equip the flint & steel and right-click on any of the inner sides of the Obsidian structure. Doing so will activate the Nether portal, and you will see a purple liquid-like glowing substance in the middle of the rectangular portal. You can then step into it to be teleported to the Nether Dimension in a few seconds.

You can also use a fire charge to activate the Nether portal. But they only appear in rare chests in the overworld. Some players also try to set fire in the portal using lava and a flammable block, but thats not a reliable option for most. So, sticking with a tried-and-tested flint and steel method might be the best for beginners.

As for the Nether portal itself, what we created is a basic version of it. While keeping the basic structure and at least 10 obsidian blocks in it, you can use your creativity to personalize it. Some people like to increase its size, while others decorate its surroundings. You can hop into the best Minecraft Discord servers to join communities and discover creative portal designs and even more. One such example of a unique design portal is in the following screenshot:

Create An End Portal In The Survival Mode

In survival mode, you do not have the necessary materials to create a portal to the End, you will have to get them, and that is very difficult.

First, you must create eyes of Ender, to do so, you need materials that are only available in the dimension of Nether, the underworld. Therefore, it is necessary to create a portal to get there. Find obsidian blocks and create a 5×4 block portal. Do not put blocks in the corners and do not fill the interior either. Activate the portal to the Nether with a lighter, you can build it with a flint and steel. Set fire to the lower interior blocks. All the steps for creating a portal to Nether are explained at the beginning of this guide.

Once in the new dimension, you must find Blaze’s rods. To get them, you must kill Blazes, a kind of enemy that only can be found in this underworld’s fortresses. By doing so, you will get the rods. Make sure you get at least 5, although it is highly recommended to get 7 or more.

Now, it is time to get some Ender pearls, so you have to kill several Endermans. This type of tentacled black enemy is common in the upper world, although they can also be found in the Nether. They are enemies who only attack if you look at them straight.

On the other hand, you should know that in the End there is a so-called exit portal, a structure that lets you go back to the normal world. Of course, this portal is not created by the user, it is already there. To use it, you must kill the Enderdragon.

It’s true: There isn’t a ton to do in the Nether right now aside from farming glowstone or blaze rods . With that said, everybody should brave the Nether at least one time in their Minecraft career. To get there, you will simply need to build a portal. This guide will tell you how to do so.

S To Make A Nether Portal In Minecraft

Now, what you need in your inventory is 10 blocks of Obsidian and a piece of Flint & Steel. Additionally, you will need 4 random blocks to make the structure. These can be any blocks, but we suggest using dirt as dirt blocks are easiest to find in Minecraft.

    1. Find an open location and place two obsidian blocks next to one another. You can place them by looking at the ground and pressing the right-click or secondary action button on your mouse. Then, place dirt or any other blocks on both sides of the obsidian blocks like the following screenshot.

    2. Now, place two obsidian blocks on top of each of the dirt blocks we placed in the step above. You can choose to break the dirt blocks after placing Obsidian blocks for aesthetic purposes, but thats optional. Then, on top of the vertical obsidian block pillars, place dirt blocks on either side. Your structure should look something like this:

    3. Now, between the top two dirt blocks, place two more Obsidianblocks. It should make the whole Minecraft Nether portal structure look like a hollow rectangular window.

Building A Portal With A Mold

  • 1Use this method if you don’t have a diamond pickaxe. You can build a Nether Portal without the use of a diamond pickaxe by constructing a manmade waterfall and using lava buckets to build the obsidian frame.
  • 2Grab 2 buckets of water, 10 lava buckets, and a stack of cobblestone and dirt. You’ll need this to make the frame for your Nether Portal.
  • 3Dig a 6×1 trench. 6 long, 1 deep. This will be considered the front of the frame.
  • 4Behind this trench, make a 6×3 high wall, with the 2 center blocks being 4 blocks high.
  • 5Place dirt blocks at the sides. You’ll need this later to go up your mold.
  • 6Place 2 water blocks on the opposite ends of your cobblestone mold using your water bucket. A mini waterfall should arise.
  • 7Remember this principle from now on: Any empty block right next to or directly on top of a water block, will become an obsidian block if you strike it with a lava bucket. Therefore, be careful. If you accidentally creation obsidian block, it will remain there forever until you find a diamond pickaxe.
  • 8Make a pillar of obsidian 3 blocks high using your water buckets. Do this for both sides.
  • 9Notice the trench below with water. Use your lava buckets and make the base, 2 blocks side by side.
  • 10Use your empty buckets and collect the 2 water source blocks on top of your cobblestone mold. You’ll need these to make the top of your Nether Portal.
  • 11Climb the mold and use your water bucket on the side of the overhang.
  • How To Make A Nether Portal Without Obsidian In Hand

    Minecraft

Some players, especially speedrunners and experienced Minecraft players, will use the games mechanics to their advantage to make their nether portal in the fastest possible way.

They do this by using a bucket of skillfully placed water by a lava pool.

Lava pools can be found in desert and plains biomes, but are most common in desert biomes.

This technique is a bit tricky and takes a lot of practice, especially if players want to do it quickly as speedrunners do, but its completely worth it and cuts game time down significantly.

Given are the step-by-step instruction to follow to make a Nether Portal without obsidian in hand, or you can watch this video for a quick demo.

First, the player needs a bucket. You can make a bucket using three pieces of iron, and since you still need to collect the iron for a flint and steel.

If players spawn in a desert biome, they might be lucky enough to find a desert temple nearby with iron in it too!

First, to make the portal you must build out a block into the lava pool.

Now you have to place water beside the block as indicated. This will make the first bit of obsidian.

Now you can mine that block you placed to make the base of your portal.

Then make an upside down L-shape with more blocks as demonstrated.

Then you place two blocks horizontally as shown below:

After collecting the water with the bucket once again, you can light your portal with your flint and steel and enter the Nether.
