Step 1: Open your inventory.

Step 2: Drag the shield from your inventory into the square located at the bottom right of your avatar, as shown above. This square has a shield symbol inside.

Make A Custom Shield In Minecraft Java Edition

First off, the ability to customize shields is exclusive to Minecraft Java Edition which is only available on PC. Console and Windows Edition players will not be able to customize their shields as the feature is not available on Bedrock Minecraft. But for Java players, the first step is acquiring a shield that requires six wooden planks and one iron ingot. The wood needs to be placed in a crafting table in the shape of a fork or a field goal with the iron ingot placed in the top middle space.

Next players will need to make a banner using six wool and one stick. The wool can be any color, but all six pieces need to be the same color. I’m having trouble seeing the use of shields in melee. They can block arrows, but in a fight against someone with a sword, I don’t see any advantage to having a shield.

You can block attacks, sure, but it’s not really worth it in my experience. The shields seem to have a warm up, so it takes a half second to actually block an attack. And once you have the shield up, they can hit you without you hitting them. It then takes a half second to get the shield down, and start attacking with your sword, and by the time this is over the other person can hit you multiple times.

If someone has been able to use shields in melee effectively, could you explain how to use them correctly? Because in my experience, two equally skilled players, one with a shield, will still have a tie in pvp. Which in my mind, the player with the shield should win.

Shields are very useful in my opinion. I’ve never used them in fighting, but the person with the shield should win since they are taking less damage since they are blocking attacks from the other person, therefore, if you are both the same level in pvp skills, the person with the shield should win, making shields pretty useful.

As of snapshot 15w31a, you can hold things in both of your hands.

I figured out that F lets you hold the item in your other hand. But how do I use this item? Can it even be used?

The item in your offhand can only be used for it’s right click function .

Note that when you right click, the game first tries to use your main hand, and if the item in it does not have a right click function , checks your offhand. The sword can no longer be used for blocking since 15w33c, so you can use things together with sword and most tools.

For the left click function, only your main hand item can be used.

In order to craft a shield, Minecraft players will need six wooden planks of any type and one iron ingot. These are easily obtained by cutting down trees and crafting the planks, then mining some iron ore underground.
