How to feed the Villagers – Minecraft

Minecraft is one of those crazes that doesnt seem to be going anywhere.

Though it has been around for ages, there are still millions of us who pick it up regularly and play it.

Popular Minecraft Lessons

  • Develop Minecraft Plugins
  • Our best guess for why this is the case is that the game is kind of timeless in its own strange way.

Yes, the graphics are a little primitive, but in many regards, the gameplay and entertainment factors are still there in abundance.

Minecraft also seems to give the players a level of control that is rarely seen in any other games out there.

You get to create your own world, and for the most part, you also dictate what happens in that world.

For us, one of the most fun things to do is to create your own village and try to make it work perfectly.

However, doing this isnt always that easy, and there are a whole host of little problems that can pop up to hold you back.

Of these problems, the one that a lot of people seem to struggle with villagers not breeding in Minecraft.

In the quest to get some baby villagers to increase your population, there are quite a few things you will need to check off the list before it can happen.

These things can be tough, especially if you are new to the game.

So, to help you along the way, we decided to put together this little guide to breeding your own villagers.

Really, the only tricks you need to know are what things they need to begin breeding. So, without further ado, here is how it is done!

    Villagers Eating In Minecraft

Villagers don’t appear to eat anything regularly. They don’t hunger and therefore don’t need to eat food to remedy that. They do, however, breed, and that requires them to “eat.”

No, it’s not the same as eating for a player, and actually, when players give villagers food, it just kind of disappears. Still, that’s the only time villagers currently eat.

Breeding villagers requires players dropping 10 or so food items to a villager and then about the same to another villager. That usually starts the breeding process, though the numbers are highly variable. The good news is that if a villager has too much food, he will give it to another villager to entice them to breed. The breeding process is marked by the appearance of hearts in the air, like other mobs.

As far as what will get villagers to breed, it’s not everything. Players can try to drop rotten flesh or poisonous potatoes to use up what items have little value, but it won’t work. Even cooked food like steak or beef won’t work, either. The official Minecraft information describes food that comes from crops, so something that comes from potatoes, carrots, beetroots or wheat.

Bread is the best food to use, though beetroots, carrots and potatoes work too. Bread is the easiest to come by and actually can be traded from villagers. A farmer villager gives 6 bread for an emerald.

What Do Villagers Eat In Minecraft

Villagers are perhaps one of the most useful mobs in Minecraft. While they drop nothing and don’t even give XP when killed, they do provide something that no other mobs do: trades.

Villagers can be traded with to acquire something that their profession offers. Armorers can give armor, toolsmiths can give tools, fishermen can give fishing rods, farmers give golden carrots, clerics give Bottles O’ Enchanting and Ender Pearls, and librarians give enchanted books.

These can all be really great to have, but the problem is that most villages don’t have more than three or four villagers and there are a lot more job blocks than that. Getting more of them requires breeding, and often transportation to another place.

How To Breed Villagers Through Trading

When a villager is found, the only way to allow it to begin breeding is by its willingness. Now that you know how to increase its willingness, you need to know how to unlock it. Doing this is fairly simple though. If the villager has a new trade that you have not completed before, it is a 100% chance that the willingness of the villager will unlock. If it is a trade that you have already completed once before, it is a 20% chance. You can use this as a way to increase the chances of your villagers taking the food in their inventories and breeding.

How Do You Improve Your Popularity

Minecraft How to give Villager Jobs

Your actions dictate your popularity in a village, which in turn dictates how villagers treat you. Your popularity is calculated on a scale of -30 to 30. A high popularity will decrease prices in trades, while a low popularity will increase prices.

If your popularity drops below -15, any naturally spawned iron golems will immediately turn hostile and attack you. Iron golems you spawn are exempt from this.

Finally, your popularity is calculated per village, so if you “accidentally” kill everyone in one village, it won’t affect how other villages see you.

So how do you change your popularity?

    • Fend off a raid. Defeating a pillager raid will increase your popularity by 10.
    • Level up a villager. Leveling up a villager through trade will increase your popularity by 2 to 4 points, depending on what level they’ve reached.
    • Trading with a villager. Trading a villager and depleting their stock will increase your popularity by 1.
    • Attacking a villager. Villager assault nets you -1 points, while killing a villager nets you -2 points.
    • Attacking a villager child. Villager children are understandably more important than adult villagers, so attacking or killing one causes you to lose 3 or 5 popularity points, respectively.
    • Killing an iron golem. If you destroy a village’s naturally spawned iron golem, you lose 5 points in popularity.

How Do You Trade With Villagers

The biggest reason most players will be interested in villages will be the in-depth trading system baked into villagers. This allows you to possibly get things that would normally be very difficult in your area or flat out impossible.

Villagers that have professions are all able to trade to players. Nitwits, unemployed villagers, and baby villagers are not able to. Whenever you interact with a villager that can trade, a special trading menu opens that shows you what trades are available.

These trades change from villager to villager, and many trades are only possible with certain professions. For example, librarians may often trade for paper or books, while butchers will want meat.

Villagers also have a leveling system in place that unlocks additional trades as they progress. There are five levels in total, ranging from novice, apprentice, journeyman, expert, and master. Trading regularly with villagers is how they gain experience towards their next level, so it’s a mutually beneficial relationship.

Not only do you have a relationship with individual villagers in regards to what trades are available, but you also cultivate a relationship with the village as a whole. This is referred to as your popularity. The higher your popularity, the better the prices for trades are. The lower your popularity, the higher the prices.

How To Lure Villagers In Minecraft

  • Building a Boat!
  • You read that right! If you want a villager to follow you for whatever purpose, build a boat near them. They will get on, and once that happens, all you have to do is drive the boat to your desired location. You can use pistons to raise the height of a boat as it will not move that freely on rough land. Also, keep in mind that this method is a little slow.

  • Minecarts
  • Villagers can also be moved around in Minecarts. Instead of a boat, just use a Minecart, and you will be good to go. Since boats are slower on land, this could be a very feasible option.

  • The Zombie Method!
  • While you could get quite creative with this, let us share what we think is another great way of luring villagers to your desired destination. What you would have to do is find a zombie and get chased. Keep running in the direction of your house in the village or wherever you want them, and once they are there, cure them.

If you want to know how to cure a zombie villager and turn him into a normal one, do not fret, as we have a quick guide for you.

    • You need to create the Splash Potion of Weakness.
    • Upon finding the zombie villager, trap them. Make sure they are protected from the sun overhead, as to not burn them.
    • Throw the potion on them and then, feed them a Golden Apple.
    • In no time, they will be cured, and you will have yourself a new villager.

Keep in mind that they can be moved further using boats, minecarts, or any other method.

Throw Food To Villagers To Trigger Mating

Another suggestion on how to breed villagers is throwing food to villagers. You may find this hilarious, but villagers become willing to breed when they have either 3 bread, 12 carrots, or 12 potatoes in their inventory, so giving them these materials will trigger their mating.

Craft bread by selecting a crafting table and place three wheat stalks in any row of the 3×3 grid. Drag the bread into your inventory. Once youve got the necessary items, give them to villagers.

So I just made a villager breeding farm and all is working well, I’m just wondering, do I have to keep feeding the breeding villagers in order for them to keep breeding?

If you have one ore more farmer/s and crops they can harvest them and share the food.

It has been claimed that farmers will only tend crops right next to their composter and potatoes or carrots may be better than wheat so the farmer/s don’t fill up their inventories with seeds and be unable to pick up the harvested crops.

To answer your specific question, yes, you have to periodically feed them more food to keep them breeding. Each time they breed, they consume a certain number of food items from their inventory: 3 bread, 12 carrots, or 12 potatoes. These have to come from a single stack in their inventory, so for each stack of carrots/potatoes you toss them, one villager can breed five times, or an average of 5 kids for every 2 stacks you toss in. I’m not positive whether or not they consume food when they go into love mode and emit hearts but fail to find a partner and thus don’t actually breed, so it may take more food than that.

Farmers now apparently only tend crops within 4 blocks of their composter, so might as well use the classic 9×9 farm with a water block in the center and the composter on top of the water block.

How To Lower Minecraft Villager Trade Prices Easily

Trading with Minecraft villagers can be the most effective way to acquire some items and complete some tasks in Minecraft. Trading with a cleric is a far more effective method of obtaining ender pearls than simply waiting for and killing Endermen. Trading for armor and tools can be quicker and more efficient than mining for diamonds.

There are only two downsides to trading with villagers: they eventually stop that trade for a day and that the price can be steep for some items. Fortunately, there are a couple of methods to lowering the trade price.

To breed, you first need to find a village that has villagers in it.

Then;make sure there are doors on the buildings you want to use as breeding hubs. If not, villagers can’t get the privacy they need for their business time.

You then need to make sure:

    • The buildings have three beds
    • One for each of the two villagers, and one for the incoming baby.;
  • That you;give two villagers some food
  • Ideally three bread. However, 12 carrots, 12 beetroots, or 12 potatoes will also work.
  • Next, lure the two villagers into a building that has three beds, close the door as you leave, and go kill 20 minutes.

When you return, there should be a little baby villager; wait another 20 minutes and that baby will be fully grown.

    Terrifying.;

    How Often Can Villagers Breed

Minecraft villagers can breed;autonomously. Two villagers will stop willing to breed after mating successfully. Therefore, you need to make them willing to breed again. The amount of time for villagers to breed again is not fixed. It happens randomly. It can take place every 2 – 5 minutes. The mating also depends on the housing condition and source of food.
