In Minecraft, the End Portal is a unique structure that is used in order to enter the End biome. The game offers players two different ways to get an End Portal the first method requires you to create the frame yourself, whereas the second method involves searching a frame that has already been assembled in a Stronghold. Heres a look at how you can create it yourself.

Create An Eye Of Ender

If you dont want Creative Mode to completely hold your hand, you can craft this portion of the End Portal requirement. Here youll need:

  • One Ender Pearl This is dropped by a fallen Enderman.
  • One blaze powder To create this ingredient, you need to place one blaze rod into the Crafting Tables center square. This item is dropped by a fallen Blaze, which typically guards a Nether Fortress.

Step 1: Open your Crafting Menu.

Step 2: Place one Ender Pearl into the center square in the middle row.

Step 3: Place one blaze powder into the right square in the middle row.

Step 4: Drag the resulting Eye of Ender down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps until you craft 12 Eyes of Ender.

How To Make A Minecraft Nether Portal

We mentioned earlier you would need the materials flint and steel, obsidian, and a fire charge. Among the three materials required, obsidian can be a tough resource to have at all times or craft, especially if youre new to Minecraft.

Before we can begin to build your Minecraft Nether portal, without the obsidian blocks, building one is futile.

Who’s Ready For An Adventure

Making The Nether Portal

After you have all your materials, you just have to do the following:

  • Place the Obsidian in a three-by-four rectangle frame shape.
  • Use the Flint and Steel while standing in the frame.
  • This will create your Nether Portal. Note that you do not have to place the corner pieces of the portal if you dont want to. The portal will still function without the corners.

Standing in the portal for more than four seconds will take you to the Nether. Be aware that the Nether is filled with dangers, and its recommended that you have some Gold Armor before you head in, or else Piglins will immediately aggro you.

Portal Linkage Between Overworld And Nether

The closest portal to the corresponding location receives the player.

A new portal is generated in the closest empty area if no portal is found in range.

    Coordinate conversion

Horizontal coordinates and distances in the Nether are proportional to the Overworld in a 1:8 ratio. That is, by moving 1 block horizontally in the Nether, players have moved the equivalent of 8 blocks on the Overworld. This does not apply to the Y-axis. Thus, for a given location in the Overworld, the corresponding coordinates in the Nether are , Y, floor), and conversely, for a location in the Nether, the matching Overworld coordinates are .

The Java floor method used in these conversions rounds down to the largest integer less than or equal to the argument , so a coordinate of 29.9 rounds to 29, and one of 29.9 to 30.

Both the X and Z coordinates in this conversion are constrained to be between 29,999,872 and 29,999,872 this affects travel to the Overworld from the Nether at X or Z beyond ±3,749,984.

    Portal search

When an entity starts colliding with a nether portal block, the game records the coordinates of the entity.

The game then converts those coordinates into destination coordinates as above: The entry X- and Z-coordinates are multiplied if the entity is in the Nether or divided by 8 if the entity is in the overworld, while the Y-coordinate is not changed.

Complete The End Portal By Adding The Eye Of Ender

To finish the End Portal, you will need to add the 12 Eyes of Ender. While standing in the center of the portal, place the Eyes of Ender inside each of the end portal frame blocks.

At this point, we have added 11 of the Eyes of Ender. Be careful not to add the 12th Eye of Ender while you are standing in the center of the portal. Doing so will activate the portal and you will fall into the portal sending you to the End biome!

To add the last Eye of Ender, step outside of the portal or fly a bit above the portal and add the last Eye of Ender.

    WARNING:

The End Portal will now activate. You can go to the End biome and battle the ! This is a very quick way to find your way to the End.

    Portals Can Accumulate Overworld Mobs

How to Make a Nether Portal in Minecraft

Portals built in the Overworld should be secured in order to prevent wandering monsters from entering the portal. These creatures can accumulate over time in the Nether not only is there no sunlight to burn undead, but without a player present, time will barely pass for them so they may not have time to despawn. Mobs such as creepers are especially bad to handle in the Nether due to the soft nature of netherrack and the abundance of lava to fall into.

How To Make A Nether Portal

    • To make a Nether Portal you will first have to mine for Obsidian. 10 blocks of Obsidian is the minimum required to build the structure.
    • Once you do that the next step is to make a Portal Frame.
    • You can do this either by making a 4×5 rectangle frame with the edges made of stone blocks like the image above or the complete frame made with Obsidian blocks.
    • Next, you will have to light up the frame you built to activate the portal.
    • Now, walk through the portal and you will be able to get to the other realm.
    • If you are in the Nether and want to travel back to the Overworld you will have to follow the same steps.

The very first step to make a Nether Portal in Minecraft is that you will have to mine Obsidian. You will need between 10 blocks minimum to make the frame. You will get Obsidian when lava mixes with water. Then using a diamond pickaxe you can mine Obsidian blocks.

Once you have finished making the frame for the portal, you will have to light it on fire. You can do that easily by crafting a Flint and Steel or using a Fire Charge. Once you do that just set fire to the frame and the inner part will turn purple.

Building Your Nether Portal In Minecraft

Once you’ve rounded up all your materials, it’s time to get started. First off, make sure you’re familiar with the basic build of a nether portal by referring to the section above. Once you have that out of the way, follow the steps below, and you’ll have a perfect portal in no time. The secret to building a nether portal without diamonds is relatively simple: obsidian is formed when water hits a lava source block. Just make a mold to make sure the obsidian happens to be created in the exact shape needed for a nether portal.

To build a nether portal without diamonds, do the following:

  • Find a suitable place for your Nether portal. I recommend either building a closed space for it or keeping it separate from everything else since it is possible for Nether mobs to travel through a portal occasionally.

  • Begin building your mold by placing your building blocks in a three-block by a six-block rectangle on the ground.
  • Fill your mold with lava. You should have a single line of lava four blocks long. Each block of lava needs to be full, so you’ll need a bucket of lava for each spot.

  • Go to one end of the mold and pour a bucket of water at the end. This will make a bit of a mess, but you can pick the water back up. The water should run over the lava blocks and turn each one into obsidian.

  • On either end, build a column with a 1 block opening directly over the obsidian blocks. This is how we build the sides of the nether portal.

How To Find And Make An End Portal In Minecraft’s Survival Mode

In “Minecraft’s” default mode, Survival, several broken End Portals are generated underground as soon as you create your world. To use them, you’ll need to find the underground stronghold and repair them with Eyes of Ender.

Quick tip: In “Minecraft: Java Edition,” all strongholds have an End Portal. In “Minecraft: Bedrock Edition,” also known as “Minecraft for Windows 10,” not all strongholds have one.

Fortunately, you don’t have to aimlessly strip mine the map to find a stronghold. Strongholds can be located using those same Eyes of Ender.

Creating A Portal Without Getting Obsidian

    New Portal in Minecraft 1.9

Nether portals can be built without the use of a diamond or netherite pickaxe to mine obsidian by placing lava in a mold of other blocks and then pouring water over it to turn it into obsidian.

A quick, simple method using a lava pool, water bucket, and some blocks

Lava pool, simple portal making. Click image to play gif.

You will only need at least 6 blocks, a water bucket, a lava pool, and a flint and steel. A block breaking tool is recommended.

  • As shown in the next gif, start by placing a block at the edge of a lava pool.
  • Place water to the left of the block.
  • Destroy the block.
  • Pick up the water.
  • If the bottom two blocks are made of obsidian :

Good, everything is going fine, as you will need all 4 of the obsidian so far. Continue to step 5.

If the bottom two blocks are NOT made of obsidian:

Because you are missing those bottom blocks, which are supposed to be obsidian, you need to destroy those blocks. After destroying those blocks, fill them with lava and use flowing water to solidify them with obsidian. Once you have all 4 obsidian blocks there, you can continue to step 5.

    5. Place those two blocks, as shown in gif.

    6. Place those four blocks, as shown in gif.

    7. Place water as shown in gif.

    8. Grab the water and light the nether portal with a flint and steel. To get that, you will need gravel and iron

    How To Deactivate Portals

There are a few things that can deactivate Nether Portals:

    • Explosive blasts
    • Water
    • Destroying the obsidian frame with a pickaxe

Although the obsidian frame can withstand explosions, the portal itself cannot. Nether Portals can be reactivated the same way you originally activated them.

To protect your portals, shelter them with cobblestone or other blast-resistant stone bricks.

Activating An End Portal In Minecraft

First things first, Minecraft players need to be able to find the End portal before even thinking about activating it. End portals are always located in the stronghold. There are usually two or three strongholds in the entire world, so Minecraft players may have a difficult time finding it. To ease the process, they will need the eyes of Ender.

These are only acquired by killing Endermen and picking up the pearls they drop. The other ingredient is blaze powder from blaze rods, which are found exclusively in the Nether.

Blaze spawners are found in Nether fortresses, which can also be a difficult task. They can spawn pretty far away and require a lot of dangerous Nether exploration.

Once the players have enough eyes of Ender , they can set off in search. Throwing the eyes of Ender up in the air will point Minecraft players in the right direction.

They can break, though it doesn’t happen that often. They mostly just fall back to the ground. Additionally, the eyes will go straight up when they are above the stronghold.

When making a fire charge, it is important that the gunpowder, blaze powder, and coal are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 1 gunpowder in the first box, 1 blaze powder in the second box, and 1 coal in the third box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a fire charge.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the 3 fire charges will appear in the box to the right.

    Protect Your Nether Portal

Before you get all excited and start exploring the portal in the Nether, youll have to protect your portal first. Take note that TNT, exploding creeper, or a ghasts fireball explosion can destroy the portal.

With the portal in the Nether destroyed, getting back to the overworld is a real struggle. To protect your Nether portal, you can use cobblestone, or if you have stronger stone or materials you want to use, that works too.

However, its not the obsidian you should be worried about. Its the portal block or the purple glow you see in your Nether portal.

Portal blocks cant be destroyed, but they can disappear, making it critical to protect your Nether portal.

What you want to do is surround your Nether portal with the cobblestone and design it in a way youll be able to remember your way back once youve gone deep into the Nether.

You can also protect your Nether portal in many different, creative ways, such as building a house to store your Nether portal or anything crafty you can think of.

Once youve successfully protected your Nether portal, its time to go exploring! You might be wondering what the Nether holds for you and what this brand new portal in the overworld contains.

    Create Flint And Steel

This is what you need to light the obsidian frame and create the Nether Portal. Here you need two types of ore: Iron and gravel. With gravel, just mine it with anything including your hand until flint appears. Iron ore must be smelted in the Furnace to create iron ingots.

    Step 1: Open your Furnace.

Step 2: Place iron ore into the top square.

Step 3: Place fuel into the bottom square, like wood, charcoal, and coal anything that burns.

Step 4: Drag the resulting iron ingot down into your inventory.

Note: As shown above, you can place more than one iron ore and one fuel into the Furnace at once to create multiple iron ingots in a single sitting. The Furnace will continue smelting until one or all resources are depleted, or you close the Furnace.

Next, with flint and iron ingots now in your inventory, you can make the flint and steel tool.

Step 5: Open your Crafting Table.

Step 6: Place one iron ingot into the top square in the left column.

Step 7: Place one flint into the center square in the middle column.

Step 8: Drag the flint and steel tool down into your inventory.
