How To Setup A Minecraft: Java Edition Server

How to create a Minecraft Java Server!

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home network’s configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. If you wish to purchase a small private server for friends, check out Minecraft Realms. If you still wish to set up your own private server, do so at your own risk as we cannot offer support for home networks or privately made servers.

Here is a guide to help you create a server so your friends can join and play together!

As a prerequisite, you should make sure you have Java installed and up to date on the computer that will host the server so it can run .jar files.

  • Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file
  • After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it Minecraft Server.
  • Drag over or copy and paste the .jar file into the Minecraft Server folder.
  • While you have the file browser open, open command prompt from the start menu.
  • You can check if Java is installed in command prompt by typing without quotes java -version.
  • To start the server, you will need to change the directory to the location where you have the Minecraft Server folder and the .jar file located in it.
  • You can find the directory in Windows by simply clicking on the browser directory in file browser here. Copy this address to your clipboard.
  • This should look like cd C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Minecraft Server
  • Create Your First World

Afterwards, youll create your first world on the realm! Youll be given the following choices:

    • New world: making a Minecraft world from scratch the old-fashioned way
    • Upload world: taking another Minecraft world that you have on your computer and uploading it to your server
    • World templates: use one of Minecrafts pre-made world
    • Adventures: pre-made adventure games made by other Minecraft creators
    • Experiences: games and experiences, also made by Minecraft creators
    • Inspiration: pre-made structures, placed in the realm to help you and your friends figure out what your next build is going to be!

    Download The Minecraft Server Files

Within the Minecraft directory, run the wget command to download the Minecraft server files:

    wget -O minecraft_server.jar https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.12.2/minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar

Assuming you would like tips on how to allow certain players access to a Minecraft server: One way to do this is by utilizing a whitelist. A whitelist is essentially a list of approved players who are allowed to join a server. To whitelist a player on a Minecraft server, the server owner must first enable the whitelist option in the server.properties file. Once the whitelist is enabled, the owner can then add players to the whitelist.txt file, which is located in the servers root directory. The owner can add as many players to the whitelist as they want. When a player tries to join a server that has the whitelist enabled, their username will be checked against the whitelist. If their name is not on the list, they will be unable to join the server.

The steps below will walk you through how to add a whitelist and enable certain players to join your server on Java and Bedrock Minecraft servers. In this course, we will go over how to use Multicraft on SeekaHost to do this for both Bedrock and Java servers. Your server will be operational as soon as you set it up only those on the Whitelist will be able to join. To enable Whitelisting on Java, go to the Whitelisting tab. Once youve completed this step, you can add yourself and other players to the whitelist. A player can be removed from the whitelist if you select it as a type, such as removing . Remove players from a whitelisted server by following these instructions.

    Minecraft Server Without Gui

Arguably, this is a more powerful option of the two and makes more sense for the power users.

    Windows

In this method, we wont be running the server.jar file directly. Instead, well create one start.bat file to run the server in the command prompt.

First, open the folder containing the server.jar and create a start.txt file. Now open the file in Notepad and copy-paste the following code into the text file, and save the changes:

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar nogui

Next, rename the file from start.txt to start.bat.

Now, double-click this start.bat file to run the server the first time. This will create multiple files with the command prompt closing moments after running the bat file.

Proceeding further requires modifying the eula.txt file, similar to what we did in the GUI method.

Once you do that and rerun the bat file, this will be the output:

The Done at the end signifies the server is running perfectly.

    Ubuntu

No GUI in Ubuntu means adding a nogui in the script file that we earlier made in the Ubuntu GUI method. So the new script will be:java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar nogui

Subsequently, save the changes and run the script to open the Minecraft server in the terminal:

You can type help to get the list of valid commands, or you can check the Minecraft WiKi.

Finally, we are done with the server creation part.

This will list the server in the multiplayer menu. Now select the server and click Join Server at the bottom.

How To Start The Raspberry Pi Minecraft Server At Boot

    1. Create a new file called mcstart.sh in the same folder as the server files . You can create and open the file with nano.

    nano mcstart.sh

    2. Enter the following code to your bash script.

    #!/bin/bashcd ~/mcserverwhile truedo   java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar   sleep 10done

What we’re doing here is changing to the directory where the server is and then running an endless loop that starts the server and then, if it ever stops, waits 10 seconds and starts it again. If the server never crashes, it will never get to the “sleep 10” part of the loop.

If the path to your Minecraft server is something other than /mcserver on your Raspberry Pi, make sure to change that part of the script.

    3. Save and exit the file by hitting CTRL + X.

    4. Set the mcstart.sh file to be executable by all users.

    chmod a+x mcstart.sh

So now you can just the mcstart command from the command line, but that won’t do you much good unless the system runs it automatically at boot.

    5. Open the crontab editor.

    crontab -e

If this is the first time you’ve opened crontab on this Raspberry Pi, you’ll be asked to select an editor. Select nano if given a choice.

    6. Enter @reboot and the path to mcstart.sh at the bottom of the crontab file and save it by hitting CTRL + X. In our case, the line looked like this but yours may vary based on the path to your home directory and what you named your server directory.

    @reboot /home/pi/mcserver/mcstart.sh

    7. Reboot your raspberry pi and see if it works.

    Making Your Server Public

If you followed the steps above, you shouldve created a server successfully. If you want to make your server accessible to other players around the world, you will need to enable port forwarding on your router.

  • Login to your routers admin panel.
  • Navigate to your routers port forwarding section.
  • Create an incoming and outgoing port forward entry in your router for port 25565 . This is the default Minecraft server port.
  • Test that your ports are forwarded correctly.
  • Keep in mind some Internet Service Providers may block port 25565 by default. If thats the case, you can try configuring your server to use another port in the server.properties file. If those ports are still blocked, your best choice is going to be paid hosting.
