How to Make a Sugar Cane Farm in Minecraft 1.14 : Minecraft Sugar Cane Farm Tutorial – Starter Farms

Farming is one of the slower parts of Minecraft, but you can make the crops harvest themselves with some redstone and a little know-how.

Once youve found a suitable location for your automatic Minecraft farm, create two pillars six blocks high and three blocks apart from each other. Then, set up chests and a hopper near the base. Youll want the chests facing away from the pillars with the hopper behind them.

The next step is to determine the length of your redstone-powered sugar farm. Theres no limit to how big it can get, but keep in mind that your Minecraft farm will constantly produce sugarcane while youre out exploring.

Extend the base of the pillars parallel with the chests to your desired length. Replace every eighth block with a redstone block. These will power our automatic hopper minecarts later on. Cap off the end with a solid wall six blocks tall.

Cover both of the railings with powered minecart tracks and place a hopper minecart on each side. Get them moving to make sure your tracks are properly set up, and make adjustments if necessary. They should eternally bounce from one end of the track to the other.;

Place a row of dirt blocks above each rail. The sugarcane plants will grow on these. Create backings for each of the railings so the middle of the structure cant be seen from the outside. This will prevent any precious sugarcane from falling out of the autofarm. Doublecheck to make sure you used hopper minecarts.

Here is a diagram of a standard sugarcane auto-farm:

Notice the flowing water in the middle. This should lead to a hopper connected to a chest for storage. You could even add an underground hopper circuit system and a storage room connected to it.

UPDATE: Changed pic to show a sugarcane farm instead of a wheat farm.

  • 1As far as I know, that’s not a design that works with sugar cane, and isn’t fully automatic even for the wheat in the picture.;SevenSidedDieDec 19 ’16 at 17:10
  • you can use the same design for sugar cane. Plus, you can convert this design to be automatic using a daylight sensor.Dec 19 ’16 at 19:00
  • There. I edited it so it shows a sugarcane farm instead.Dec 19 ’16 at 19:11
  • 1This one also doesn’t appear to be automatic. It’s halfway to being an answer to the questioncould you just provide the rest of the design that does make it automatic?

Here is a solution I like to use. I will show two different setups. One is minimalist. Easy in survival. The other is the same basic design but a little nicer.

What Is Sugar Can Farm Minecraft

The sugarcanes are about 1 to 4 blocks tall. It is always found and can be farmed near the water source. As being an important source for many items, it is also used as a crafting ingredient.

If the supporting block of Sugar Cane is removed, this plant uproots instantly. So, it always needs support. If the adjacent water source is removed, the sugar cane farm Minecraft will uproot. In the Bedrock Edition, it will uproot instantly after the removal of the water source. In the case of Java Edition, the Sugar Cane block will uproot after the next block update or also after the next random tick.

Now, we will see the trading of this crop. It will help in getting this crop easily.

Semi Automatic Farm Designs

In Bedrock Edition, when sugar cane’s water source is removed, it immediately breaks. Using this principle, it is easy to create semi-automatic farms that harvest the sugar cane. These designs should still work in Java Edition, however, it will take a bit more time for the sugar cane to break. Some other designs here are classified as semi-automatic due to their lack of ability to pick up the sugar cane. These can often be easily converted into automatic designs as seen in the next section.

How To Farm Sugar Cane In Minecraft

Farming sugar cane is quite easy, though the requirements of sugar cane to grow can make it a bit tricky to increase our land use efficiency. However, there are a few ways with which you can plant as many sugar cane in small plots of land as possible.

There are 2 things we have to keep in mind. The first is that sugar cane can only grow on sand, dirt or grass blocks directly next to a water block, diagonally doesnt count. Secondly, for sugar cane to grow up to 3 blocks high, no other blocks can be placed up to 4 blocks above the ground. Sugar cane will never grow against the bottom of a block.

Taking this into account there are a few builds you can make. The first one is shown below, which uses as little water blocks as possible, while still creating a square shape. This size is as small as you can go, other sizes will have empty spots.

However, this size is also the only size which you can use to create bigger versions, which will always be a few of these squares next to each other. So a 6×6 square isnt really possible, but an 8×8 square is, as you just place 4 of the 4×4 squares next to each other.

As you can see in the image above, we managed to grow 8 sugar canes on a 3×3 plot by simply dropping water from a higher spot. Note that the water flows under the 4 elevated grass blocks to make sure the lower sugar canes also get some water.

S To Make An Automatic Sugarcane Farm

First, you will want to lay down 5 dirt blocks in a row. Leaving a row next to the dirt empty, surround the 5×2 space with your building block.

Above, you can see what it should look like. The sugarcane will not place on the ground without a water source. However, you can see it in the image above for reference as to where it will go.

Dig a hole in the middle of the foundation, directly next to the dirt for sugarcane. Extend this outwards underneath the building block, removing 3 dirt blocks. You should have a 4×5 build, with a 3×1 ‘trench’ leading to the side. Check the image above for reference.

Once the hole is dug, place a chest on the outside. The chest should be in the center of the 5 blocks facing you. Feel free to clear an area for easy access. From the backside of the chest, attach 2 hoppers. Hold shift when attaching to chests and hoppers so you won’t interact with them. The example above has a removed building block so you can see the layout of both hoppers.

Place two water sources on opposite ends of the empty 5×1 space above the hopper. The water should flow and meet at the hopper in the center.

Next, plant 5 sugarcanes on the dirt, and then use your building blocks behind the sugarcane to place 7 blocks in a row.

On top of the building blocks, place 5 pistons. Pistons are a bit tricky to place, so you may have to use a few temporary blocks to adjust the pistons until they face outwards, towards the sugarcane.
