How Do I Add A Custom Mob To Minecraft
Basically decided to make my own mob, I have:
- Drawn the model
- Added the function call for addMapping within the EntityList class
Im stuck on what to do next. Ive tried finding the code that deals with passive animal spawning in the world, however I cant seem to find it.
Help greatly appreciated.

- \$\begingroup\$And do a search on minecraft, you will find results on this site re modding that game.\$\endgroup\$Aug 31 11 at 13:13
Well Im not going to write a whole tutorial but I will link you to some resources and give some tips.
Firstly if you are going to mod Minecraft in any way, you want to go to the modding wiki.
I had a look around the wiki, and found a basic mob creation tutorial.
There is a massive mod creation tutorial here. You should have a skim through that
I picked out some individual tutorials that you might like-
Now on to the model creation, this took me a while to find, but I found 3 modelling programs.
For the passive animal spawning code, I suggest you download Minecraft Coders Pack MCP, and search through the source files. The way I first found how to mod the terrain generator, was searching the source directory for the blockID I was modding. I suggest you search for terms like spawn and entity.
Things You Are Not To Do
There are some things that you should be careful to not do when creating a mod. Keep this list in mind:
- Dont release Minecraft versions or modifications that allow you to play without having bought Minecraft from Mojang Studios.
- Dont release the de-compiled source code of Minecraft in any way.
- Dont modify existing mods without permission from that mods author. Check their License, usually available in the authors GitHub repository. If you cant find the license, then you do not have permission to share a modified version with anybody. You may tinker with the files for personal use only.
Writing Your First Minecraft Mod
For this example mod, were going to produce a super diamond ore, which will produce a vast quantity of diamonds when mined, instead of the usual one or two. You might also want to get inspired by some great existing Minecraft mods.
To get started, you need a texture for your new block. This is an image which defines what your block looks like. This could be stone, wood, or any custom artwork. This example will use the diamond ore, but you can use any art you want.
From the top of the main menu, select Tools. Choose Create item/block texture. This will open the Texture Maker, where you can create your own texture, based on existing Minecraft artwork.
The texture maker contains contains four layer controls. These allow you to choose artwork and a color, which all get combined into your final texture.
Except for Layer 1, the layer controls contain the same three settings. From left to right, these are:
Once youve designed your artwork, select Use at the bottom, and then Block for the texture type. Choose Exit to go back to the Workspace page. The workspace page will now list your texture.
From the left hand menu of the Workspace tab, select Mod Elements. This is where you will create your mod using your texture.

Minecraft Summon Mob Command Generator
Summon custom mobs using this command generators to make a summon command, egg or spawner. You can create custom mobs for Minecraft, with custom mob names, give amob weapons and armor, custom drops with drop chances and all buff mobs with custom attributes.
Custom Name: You can give your mob a custom name. From Java 1.14 you can customize the font color and style. Some versions you need to force display name.
Properties: There is range of simple options to alter your mob. No AI will stop them moving and attacking, invulnerability and persistent can keep them aroundforever. Silent mobs could be scary.
Items: Many mobs can hold items and wear armor. However results vary depending on the mob, all options are enabled for all mobs, because Minecraft cando some quite surprising things.
Enchanted and named items, copy a give command and paste into the item column, or paste the nbt portion into the tag column.
Attributes: Alter mob attributes to give it a vast range of strengths and weaknesses. Ultra fast zombie anyone?
Mounts, for passengers: Passengers are organized in order of top to bottom. Spawn eggs and Spawners do not support the passengers tag, this is a reported Mojang bug. The mob on top, will always have control over the mob it is mounted on as of Java Edition 1.12. Mobs on the bottom have small resistance, they can move slowly towards their own intentions.
Age: When mobs have a baby equivalent negatives numbers are how many ticks until they become an adult.
Congratulations You Have Now Made A Mob With Simple Changes To Its Base Mob Behaviour
I do not cover custom loot tables or natural spawning of your custom mob in this tutorial but that doesnt mean it is not possible, of course it is, you just need to know how to do it.
I also do not cover how to get this newly created addon into XBOX Minecraft, but it is possible, and Ive done that many times for all my custom mobs and addons.
Let me know down below if these topics would interest you and I will humbly create a tutorial for that!

How To Make A Mob Farm In Minecraft
You can build a mob farm in either version of Minecraft, Java or Bedrock. And you can be playing in Survival, Creative, Adventure, or Hardcore mode but doing it in anything but Creative will take a lot of time and resources.
To build your mob farm, you’ll need:
- At least 25 full stacks of cobblestone
- One full stack of trapdoors
- Four hoppers
- Four slabs of any material
- Two buckets filled with water
A “full stack” refers to 64 units of an item. And you don’t have to use cobblestone it can be any solid block but cobblestone is quick and easy to gather.
How To Use Your Mob Farm
There’s a good chance that mobs have already started appearing in your spawner room. Wait at least five minutes, then climb down from your AFK room and head back to the very bottom of the mob farm.
If you built it correctly and waited long enough, you’ll find multiple enemies stuck together on top of the stone slabs. You’ll just barely be able to see them only their legs should be visible.
Once you’ve gathered enough enemies, swing a weapon at their legs to kill them. They should only take one or two hits each.
The mobs will drop XP orbs for you to collect, and their other drops will get sucked into the treasure chests below. Feel free to open the chests and retrieve the drops whenever you want.
Head back up to your AFK room and repeat this process for as long as you want.

What Programs / Applications Do You Need
Creating and customizing files for Minecraft is somewhat technical and can be difficult, and youre sure to encounter a handful of issues while dealing with the hundreds of files within Minecraft. However there are many ways to circumvent these issues. Theres a right tool for every job and while working on your texture pack you will need access to a few programs that will not only help make things easy for you but will also help mitigate issues.
First off you will need a file archiver. Most computer users will already have a file archiver like 7zip or Winrar on their device. The file archiver is a vital software needed to access the many files used in creating texture packs and oftentimes is needed to edit textures, models or sounds.
Normally, a IDE would be the most important thing when it comes to making a add-on, but in this instance we will be using MCreator to do all the hard work for us. Thisll also give us the added benefit of skipping through all the complicated coding and syntax and skip straight to just the details of what our mob looks like and how it behaves.
Finally if you are planning on editing textures or creating new textures for your new mob, the most important program youll need is an image editor. You can technically use any editor that supports transparency, we would recommend for you to use BlockBench as it officially supports Minecraft textures and it has a simple layout and also provides a visual 3-D model while you edit your textures.

Minecraft Skins For Mobs
Mob skins change the look of animals, monsters and some common objects in the game. Minecraft supports mob skins on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition for Windows 10 & Pocket Edition. Similar to player skins, the creative community has come up with amazing, realistic, cartoon, scary and wild ideas. Mobs have very different models from one another allowing pixel artists even greater freedom to transform the visual appearance. You never know what you’re going to find to customize your game.
Note On Available Behavior Changes
Not all behaviors of a mob are data driven yet! You cannot change the details for special movement behaviors like flying or swimming . This can also interfere with behaviors you might add to them. For example, giving the squid a melee attack does not work while it is in water as its swimming behavior is still hard coded. Additionally it is not possible to just change some mobs behavior such as for example the witch utilizing potions is not data driven yet and you will be unable to control it.
Look forward to these changes in the future!

Creating A Behavior Pack
To begin, you can find the unmodified game files on Minecrafts official site.
To find the files, navigate to the bottom of the page, where you will find a paragraph where you can dowload a zip for the unmodified base files. You must then take the downloaded zip file and navigate to the com.mojang folder and place the zip file in the development_behavior_packs folder, and unzip it.
This step is not strictly necessary, and you can create a behavior pack without it, but it makes it much easier.
to start without the downloaded files, you can follow these steps.
- Again, navigate to the development_behavior_packs folder and create there a new folder named tutorial_behavior_pack:

Building The Mob Grinder
We’ll start from the bottom of the mob farm and work upwards. First, we’ll build the “mob grinder” that hurts and holds the mobs you spawn.
1. Dig a 2×2 hole in the ground. It only needs to be one layer deep.
2. Place your four treasure chests into the hole, all facing the same direction. When you place two chests next to each other in the same direction, they’ll merge into a “large” treasure chest.
3. Place your four hoppers on top of the treasure chests. Make sure to crouch while you place them, or you’ll just keep opening the treasure chests instead.
4. Place your slabs on top of the hoppers. Again, you’ll want to crouch while you do it.
If you’ve done it correctly, you’ve now got a three-layer mob grinder.
Next, we’ll build the well and bridges.
Farming Mobs Equals Increased Health Protection
Minecraft stands out from other latest video games, where it offers five different gaming modes with respective difficulties, such as the Creative mode, Survival mode, Adventure mode, Spectator mode, and Hardcore mode.
Excluding Spectator mode, the rest of the world requires you a high mastery and honed expertise in farming mobs. In these modes, you will have a health bar, a hunger bar, and an experience bar. These bars affect your stamina, speed, precision, and strength in killing different kinds of hostile mobs.
In this case, farming mobs ameliorate the collection of your resources, leveraging your needs with a minimum amount of effort. Through winning strategies like spawning and killing mobs, you can guard your walls and advance the game.
Moreover, mobs cant attack you in creative mode. But in the survival and adventure modes, hostile mobs can damage and kill your HP.
Take note that in Survival mode, you can search for resources, craft items, and pick up whatever you want. However, you will not be able to fly.
As a professional reminder, you have to play the Creative Mode or Survival Mode first if you want to enable the Minecraft Adventure Mode.

Testing Your Behavior Pack
The behavior pack is now game ready. to test it, open minecraft, go to a world on which you want to test it. go to the world settings, navigate to the addons menu, and find it under my packs. it will now work on your worlds. this is where the version line in the manifest.json file becomes important. anytime you modify anything in the development pack, the world will continue to run the old version unless the pack version is higher.

Exporting Your Minecraft Mod
Once you have produced your mod, you need to export it ready for Minecraft to use.
From the bottom left of the Workspace toolbar, choose the Export workspace into mod file button. This will bundle your mod up into its own package, ready for Minecraft to import. If you modified more than one block, then all will show up in your mod.
Note: If youd like to work on several mods at the same time, switch to a different workspace from the main menu.
The Mod details menu provides options for packaging your mod. You can enter a name, a version, description, and creator details. Upload an image if you want to. The most important of these options is the File extension. Leave this on the default option of .JAR.
When youre ready, press Recompile and export. This will package up your mod, but it may take some time depending on your computer, and the number of things you have changed.

Everything To Know About Creating A Custom Minecraft Mob
Learn everything you need to know about creating a Custom Minecraft Mob with oiur guide.
The release of the brand new Caves and Cliffs update introduced several new mobs and blocks, including the iconic axolotl and goats, which took the internet by storm with their simple, adorable models and animations. However, with the long break between updates, even the introduction of these cute and cuddly mobs might not be enough to tide you over the long months of content drought. Thats why were here today to teach you how to create your own creatures in Minecraft!
One of my favorite mobs design wise is the iconic Creeper and Id like nothing more than to make a non-hostile, or even tamable, Creeper that wouldnt immediately combust upon getting near me. The possibilities are endless once you get the hang of it you could create a wolf that flies, or a pig that explodes when you hit it.
If youve been playing Minecraft for a while, Im sure that youve thought of customizing mobs to your liking. Whats not to like about pranking your friends with friendly creepers and angry cows, after all!? Most players might say that modded Minecraft is the only way to accomplish this but this isnt true, actually! Theres an easier way to create and add custom mobs into your game using the handy add-ons that come with Minecraft.
