How can I best convert a picture to the Minecraft wool palette?

Minecraft wool comes in a variety of colors and shapes, but it’s not a very good one: there’s too many shades of pink and blue and not enough yellows. Short of asking everybody on your server to use the same texture pack as you, that’s not going to be good.

How can I make do with the colors Minecraft gives you?

Best Answer

This is a known problem in computer science called dithering: your picture has too many colors for the target format or display to show so what you can do is simulate the colors in between through juxtaposition.

Dithering might not work very well if your picture is going to be seen from up close you can also near to the closest color from those 16. Again, this is a solved problem and a computer can do the maths for you.

Here’s what you can do to get the best results a computer can give you.

  • Get Gimp, install it and open it.
  • Get a picture of the wool palette in your texture on screen just opening it in an image viewer or the browser is fine. Keep it unobscured from all of the open dialogues, including the ones we’re about to open.
  • Open the palette editor
  • On the bottom bar of the palette editor hit the create palette button.
  • In the new dialogue that pops up, call the picture Minecraft.
  • Find the eyedropper button next to the HTML notation textbox. Click it.
  • Close the color picker.
  • Open the picture you want to convert.
  • Choose Use custom palette
  • Hit Ok.

How To Use Dyes In Minecraft

Dyes are interchangeable in these recipes, you can swap out the dyes used in example for the color of dye you want to use. You can dye terracotta, which is obtained through smelting clay blocks, to make stained terracotta. Smelt this terracotta to make glazed terracotta which hold a unique amount of patterned shapes.

You can also stain glass to make stained glass panes or simply add some color to your windows.

You can dye firework stars to explode into a certain color, dye shulker boxes to color code your sorting, and create colored concrete powder for a smooth block that is entirely a specific color.

Finally, you can also dye wool which can be used to make a different color of bed.

If you want to change the color of an existing bed simply place the bed alongside the color of dye you want the bed to be.

That is every use of dye in the game of Minecraft.

Add Items To Make Red Wool

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make red wool, place and in the 3×3 crafting grid.

When making red wool, it is important that the wool and red rose dye are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 1 red rose in the first box and 1 wool in the second box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for red wool.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the red wool will appear in the box to the right.

The best way to obtain these dyes are through Flower Farms, Squid Farms, Cocoa Farms, and Cactus Farms. Most flowers can be harvest from Flower Forests, Sunflower Plains, or Plains biomes. Applying Bonemeal to a grass block can sometimes result in flower that is found in that specific biome.

Squid farms involve large bodies of water designed to kill Squids for their Ink Sacs to produce Black Dye. Cocoa Farms require Jungle Wood and are easy to set up. Cactus farms require Sand and Cactus sourced from Deserts or Mesas.

Many of the dyes available in the game can be obtained through flowers. If you manage to find a flower field you will have the majority of dyes available to you.

To turn a flower into dye simply place it in your crafting menu.

You will end up with that flowers respective color as a dye. You can make the remaining dyes by combining other dyes together. For example, you can make purple dye by combining red and blue dye.

You can use pink tulips to get pink dye and combine purple and pink to make magenta.

You may have noticed that each dye recipe will yield two dyes for use. This is to ensure that the different shades of dye do not consume the base ingredients. You will end up with an equal quantity of dye.

    Minecraft Achievement: Rainbow Collection

In order to earn the “Rainbow Collection” achievement, Minecraft Bedrock players will need to acquire one of every single piece of colored wool in the game.

White wool is the easiest to get, as it can be obtained by either killing or shearing white sheep with a pair of shears. Shearing white sheep is, by far, the more renewable choice between the two, as the sheep’s wool will eventually grow back. This means that players will be able to repeatedly get more wool from the same sheep.

However, sheep can also naturally generate with black, gray, light gray, brown or pink wool. This can be a great way for players with a bit of luck to obtain some of the extra colored wool required for the Rainbow Collection achievement.

Minecraft players can obtain a piece of colored wool by combining any color of dye with a block of white wool in the player crafting window or at a crafting table. To get the Rainbow Collection achievement, players will just need to do this for every single color of dye except for white.

That aspect of the achievement is simple enough, but getting every single color of dye is a bit trickier to do. Luckily, this is not a monumental task and will simply require a bit of game knowledge and time.

The sixteen types of dye that can be acquired in Minecraft are white, light gray, gray, black, brown, red, orange, yellow, lime, green, cyan, light blue, blue, purple, magenta and pink.

    Quickest Way To Farm Wool

The quickest and most efficient way to farm colored wool is with a sheep farm. Of course, you can mix dyes with white wool in a crafting bench to create colored wool, but you go through resources incredibly quick. When you dye a sheep a certain color, then shear the sheep, you will receive between 1-3 pieces of wool. If you were to mix dye with white wool in a crafting bench, you would only receive 1 piece of the colored wool.

To keep a surplus of colored wool, you can breed the sheep. Make sure that you have grass for the sheep to eat or else their wool will not grow back. When you breed two sheep, it will produce a baby sheep of the same color as one of the parents. Keep in mind, the color is more likely to be that of the parent that was fed wheat first. No mixes of colors will occur the baby will always be the same color as one of the parents.

How To Get Dyes In Minecraft

To make most dyes in the game you can do so through flowers. There are seven primary colors in Minecraft used to make different shades of dye. Five of these colors can be made through flowers, black, red, yellow, blue, and white. You cannot find brown or green dye through flowers.

To get black dye you will have to hunt down squids to get ink sacs or as a more expensive option you can use wither roses to get black dye.

To get brown dye you will need to locate cocoa beans grown in jungles.

Finally, to get green dye you will need to smelt cactus.

    Automatic Colored Wool Farm

For players wanting a mass amount of colored Wool the absolute best thing to do is build an automated farm for colored Wool. Multiple guides exist online, but the basic premise is the same. The player dyes a Sheep in the desired color and confines it to a glass pen with a grass bottom.

An Observer can be attached to the Grass in such a way that when the Sheep eats the Grass and it switches to a Dirt block a Redstone pulse is sent. That pulse activates a Dispenser with a Shear inside to automatically Shear the Sheep. Hoppers with Minecarts are placed below the grass to catch the Wool that drops from the process. The Sheep has a 90% of growing new Wool every two minutes when done this way.

    Random Sources Of Dyes

In addition to the more traditional means of obtaining dyes there are other options available. This can be particularly helpful if the player hasnt encountered a Flower-based biome. There are also some means that the player may be pursuing anyways that can prove helpful.

Wandering Villagers will sell various items that can be broken down into dyes, Sea Pickles are an example of this. Children in villages also have a chance of giving the player a random flower if they have the Hero of the Village effect. Iron Golems when killed will drop Poppies and Withers when they kill other mobs will create Wither Roses.

How Many Blocks Does Minecraft Have

Minecraft but we have to get every color of wool. (ft. spicytomat0)

Not all items in Minecraft are blocks, despite everything being made of them. Swords, for example, are not blocks. Air is a block, and so is water, though air can’t be mined or collected.

The total number of usable blocks, according to one Redditor, was over 3000 quite a long time ago.

The number has only gotten higher since then, as several updates have added new blocks.

There are several different blocks, each with unique variations, which further skyrockets the number. There are six main types of wood: jungle, birch, acacia, oak, dark oak and spruce.

Each one of these has logs, planks, stripped logs and all manner of different blocks which again, quickly boost the overall total. Many of these blocks have colored variations as well.

Bring Back The Old Wool Colors

I enjoy the new wool color palette, but personally I really liked some of the old colors that the old wool color palette had, and the colors that were around back then were different from the colors that we have today.

    ^old minecraft wool colors^

    ^new minecraft wool colors^

The new colors are nice, but I don’t like that the old ones had to go. My suggestion isn’t to get rid of the new colors, but to introduce a new type of wool that matches the old colors.

The new wool could be called “oven dyed wool” and it can be crafted by simply taking the current wool and cooking it in a furnace, to desaturate it to how it used to look.

I think it would be a great way to increase the available colors that builders have access to, and to appeal to people who just like how it used to look.
