How Do I Get Rid Of Network Lag

Because network connection lag is so easy to fix, its best to start with optimizing your network connection. To do so, refer to the following list of helpful hints:

  • If necessary, restart your router or modem. This can be done by unplugging your router and waiting 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • It is recommended that you use an Ethernet cable. With a wired connection, you can have a fast and stable internet connection.
  • Your networks active connections should be kept to a bare minimum. You may not have enough bandwidth to run the server if you use a shared internet connection. As a result, make sure that there arent too many users or services overloading the bandwidth.
  • Toggle the VPN connection on. To see if it works, try switching to a VPN connection. Your use the ExpressVPN, this is the best VPN connection to get unrestricted access.
  • Start the network troubleshooter application. If the previous suggestions fail to resolve the network latency, you can use the Network troubleshooter to identify and try to resolve common internet issues and fix slow internet.

If youre still getting the Minecraft server cant keep up is the server overloaded error after establishing a stable and fast network connection, the issue could be caused by server lag or client lag.

What Does Server Cant Keep Up Mean

All Minecraft servers, modded or vanilla, use ticks per second for operations like movement, breaking/placing blocks, entities, generating chunks, and everything else. The Cant Keep Up! console message indicates tick lag, which is caused by in-game activities. If you see that message, the server will likely not meet the perfect TPS value. By default, that value is 20 and can decrease to extremely lower numbers such as 5. The lower values mean lag, and higher numbers mean less lag, which impacts your players experience on the server. You can review an example of a server overloading from the Console here: Cant keep up! Is the server overloaded? Running 8567ms or 249 ticks behind

End Unnecessary Processes Through The Task Manager

Applications running in the computers background can hog your CPU memory. A pre-occupied RAM cannot run further applications and if this is your case, you will not be able to run the Minecraft game properly. This can have varying impacts on the game.

The Windows Task Manager or the Resource manager tool can show you the applications that are using too many resources and allow users to eliminate them to clear CPU memory. Since the Task Manager is common for all Windows users, we have provided the instructions to proceed with it.

  • Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys on your keyboard to launch the Task Manager window. Alternatively, you can also find this option in the Task Termination window and in the context menu of the taskbar.
  • From the top, select the processes one by one and click on End Task.

This will open up more memory for your server to run smoothly. Make sure that you do not end applications that you want running on your system.

Take A Look At Your Server Configurations

How to Fix The Server Can’t Keep Up Error

The Minecraft server has certain requirements to be hosted by a computer. When these configurations are not met by the system, there can be client lag issues. Not only do the hardware configurations matter but also on the type of server you choose and the tool used to host it.

Task-load on your server is affected by settings in your config files like View Distance and randomTickSpeed. There are other parameters specific to certain server versions, including the entity-broadcast-range-percentage for the Java 1.15 or 1.16+ versions and tick-distance for Bedrock servers, that are only available with certain server versions.

Not only may you adjust particular parameters, however, but there are also numerous Server Types, such as Paper, that are designed with optimization in mind. Spigot or Paper are server types for individuals who arent searching for a modified experience owing to its implemented enhancements and verified uptime.

Assign More Ram To The Minecraft Server

Assigning a larger amount of RAM to your Minecraft game or the server you host is a complicated process. Gamers use and recommend using third-party launcher applications like CurseForge or AT Launcher to do this.

But since it can be done through the Minecraft Launcher itself, we have stated the steps to do so without the requirement of extra helping applications. Follow the below-stated procedure

  • Launch the Minecraft Launcher window. This is where you generally launch the game, add skins, edit installations, and download patch and game updates.
  • Go to the Installations tab and look for the Minecraft version that requires a RAM boost.
  • Move your pointer over the version that you want to allot more RAM to and you will see a three-dot menu appear on the right-most corner of the row.
  • Click on it and choose Edit from the pop-up menu.
  • Now, on the page that appears, select More Options to expand it into a set of advanced settings.
  • Now, under the JVM ARGUMENTS section examine the code. You should be able to see a long code that starts with -Xmx2G. Here, the 2G stands for 2 GB. This is what we should be changing.
  • Change the 2 to the amount of RAM that you are willing to allot to the Minecraft game. 4 GB of RAM is highly adequate to run the game. In this case, your code should begin with -Xmx4G. Do not change the rest of the line, under any circumstances.
  • Once the changes are done, click on the Save button to save your changes.

java -XmxM -XmsM -exe Minecraft_Server.exe -o true

Fix 6 Extra Tips To Avoid The Server Lag

The way you play the game also has an impact on the game’s performance. To avoid any server lagging next time, we recommend you follow the tips below.

  • Dont use flashing lamps too frequently. Too many lighting updates can lead to a laggy server.
  • Avoid using the repeating blocks that store their recent outputs, which tend to cause more lag than the blocks that dont store their outputs.
  • Avoid using entities that have the same UUIDs. You can view the information from your server console.
  • Use F3 to see the total number of entities in the area.
  • Keep the player count of your server in check because too many players may lead to server lag.
  • Remove some unnecessary plugins.
  • Limit the speed of monsters spawn.

Fix 1 Maximize Your Cpu Performance

Fix Can

CPU speed plays a vitally important role in the speed of interacting with other computer components including memory, hard disk, etc. Once your CPU runs slowly and has high usage, you may encounter various issues like cant keep up Minecraft server. To improve the overall CPU performance, you can end the processes that occupy too much CPU usage in Task Manager. For that:

Step 1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open Task Manager.

Step 2. In the Processes tab, select the CPU column to sort out the CPU usage from the largest to smallest.

Step 3. Right-click the progress or service that takes up too much CPU and select End task. Then repeat this process to other hogging processes.

Configurational Changes You Might Need To Make In The Game Settings

  • Avoid using flashing lamps too often. A server that receives several lighting updates may become unresponsive.
  • Use entities with different UUIDs as little as possible. You may access the data through the server hosting interface. To view the total number of entities on nearby chunks, press F3.
  • Reduce the rate at which monsters spawn in your world.

Fix 3 Defragment Your Hard Drive

As you know, Minecraft will automatically save your game process to disk after every 45 seconds. If many processes or Minecraft server files are writing to disk frequently, it may cause a hard drive failure and let the game lag. So, we recommend you improve the IO performance by performing a defragment of your disk. Heres how:

Note:

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box, and then type dfrgui in it and hit Enter.

Step 2. Select the drive that you want to defrag from the list and click on Optimize.

Step 3. Wait for the optimization to complete. After that, reboot your PC and check if you still cant keep up Minecraft server.

My friends and I haven’t really played since about 1.12, back then we would use an old pentium 4 machine as a server without any issues.

We’ve recently restarted playing and I’m hosting the server through a docker image on my synology box at version 1.18. When anyone starts traveling fast or far way from other players the entities in the game begin to stutter and I get warnings in my log files . This occurs both when chunk generating and when visiting already explored areas. This also badly occurs when someone enters the nether.

I tried briefly upgrading to 1.18.1, but this version had several repeatable crashs scenerios in it so I downgraded back to 1.18. It also didn’t fix the issue while it was running.

Reading mostly has brought me to the conclusion that everyones answer is throw more resources at it, however it is not even fully using all the resources I’ve already allocated it.

I’ve made sure that we are not playing the game during virus detection, threat detection or drive cleanup routines.

I’ve also tried shutting down all other dockers and vmms on the server while this is going on.

Command: java -Xmx6G -jar minecraft_server.1.18.jarIdle: cpu 1.59% mem 2.85GbWhile exploring: cpu ~30% mem 3.6Gb

Fix 4 Upgrade To An Ssd Or Ramdisk

If you have used a hard disk drive for a long time, then defragment has little impact on improving the IO performance. Another better way is to upgrade your hard drive to an SSD or RAMDISK. Here comes a new question: how to upgrade to SSD/RAMDISK without reinstalling OS. MiniTool Partition Wizard can help you do that easily. Its a powerful partition manager that can migrate OS to an SSD, hide system reserved partition, undelete user profile, extend partition, etc.

Heres how to use the MiniTool software to migrate OS.

Step 1. Install the new SSD to your computer carefully if there are multiple disk trays. If not, you just need to migrate OS to the target SSD and install it to your computer.

Step 2. Open the software to enter its main interface, and then select Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard from the left action pane and select Option B to copy the system required partitions only, and click on Next.

Tip:Option A

Step 3. Select the target SSD and click on Next. Then click on Yes to confirm it.

Step 4. Select a copy option based on your needs and click on Next.

Step 5. Read the information before you click Finish in the next window. Finally, click on Apply to execute the pending operations. Once done, your previous OS should be moved to the SSD.

Now, relaunch the game and check if you get the Minecraft server can’t keep up fixed.

How Do I Get Rid Of Client Lag

The most common symptom is a loss of frames-per-second . FPS can be viewed in Minecraft by pressing the F3 key. Certain keyboard layouts may necessitate the use of the Fn + F3 keyboard combination. On your screen, you will see a lot of data. The Frames-Per-Second rate can be found in the upper left of the window.

You can quickly resolve the client lag by following the steps below:

Make any necessary changes to the video settings. Make the following changes to your Video Settings window:

  • Biome Mixture: OFF
  • Effects of FOC: 25 to 50 per cent

Your video cards drivers should be installed or updated.

Make sure the Java version on your client is the same as the Java version on the server.

Press Shift + F3 to open the Minecraft Profiler graph and search for the causes of client lag.
