How To Make A Minecraft Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home network’s configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. If you wish to purchase a small private server for friends, check out Minecraft Realms. If you still wish to set up your own private server, do so at your own risk as wecannot offer support for home networks or privately made servers.

Here is a guide to help you create a server so your friends can join and play together!

As a prerequisite, you should make sure you have Java installed and up to date on the computer that will host the server so it can run .jar files.

  • Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file
  • After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it Minecraft Server.
  • Drag over or copy and paste the .jar file into the Minecraft Server folder.
  • While you have the file browser open, open command prompt from the start menu.
  • You can check if Java is installed in command prompt by typing without quotes java -version.
  • To start the server, you will need to change the directory to the location where you have the Minecraft Server folder and the .jar file located in it.
  • You can find the directory in Windows by simply clicking on the browser directory in file browser here. Copy this address to your clipboard.
  • This should look like cd C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Minecraft Server

Alternatively, you can manage/automate the startup and shutdown of the Minecraft server using a script such as the ones listed below:

Port forwarding is used when you have a router and you wish to let users connect to your server through it. If you wish to host your server for local reasons, it is not required that you do so. Keep in mind that port forwarding might cause security risks.

When port forwarding, it varies on how your router will ask you for the information. If you don’t understand on how your router wants you to input the information, try visiting PortForward.com for a tutorial.

Once you have managed to locate your router’s admin page, and find the Port Forwarding page hit add new service or custom service. When you get a page asking to setup the new rule, it should prompt you on what you want to call it. You may name it as you wish, but for simplicity, name it “minecraft“. Then, you want to look for “type”. If “TCP/UDP” or “Both” isn’t an option you will have to create two rules for both protocols. For the ports , enter 25565. If it asks for anything else other than output IP , leave it alone and continue.

To find your computer’s IP address, use the following steps:

    Windows

Now it is time to configure and connect.

If you have successfully logged in to your game, you can sometimes still run into problems with communication between your computer/network and the server you are trying to connect to.Possible solutions are:

    • Check that your network connection is enabled, and that no programs are blocking outgoing connections.
    • Try disabling any existing firewall program, or changing its configuration options.
    • Restart your modem/router.
    • You may also want to try logging out of your account and then logging back in, as this refreshes your profile’s authentication and connection with our servers.

It is also possible that this can occur when the Mojang servers are having difficulties processing requests. If you have tried the above solutions, please wait a bit and try your server login again later. If issues continue, you may want to contact your network and/or server administrator. If you’re still receiving a connection error after trying the above solutions, then you may want to check that this is not caused by some third-party Minecraft software/mods that you have downloaded.

    Connecting To Your Minecraft Server

Now lets connect to the server. The very first step is to run our batch file to launch the server.

With the server launched, open your Minecraft launch page and make sure you load the version of Minecraft that matches the jar you downloaded. As of the writing of this article, Minecraft version 1.15 was the latest version and the server that was downloaded. However, if this becomes outdated I can make a new server or simply load up the 1.15 version of Minecraft. It will be a good idea to make a launch version of Minecraft that we can always connect to our server with. To do this you can go to the Installations tab and click the +New button.

Once here, you should name the installation with the server and version number of Minecraft and select the version as the release number your server download is. This is shown below for version 1.15 so make sure you change this to your Minecraft server version. Make sure to click create to finish this installation.

Next find it in your list and click Play to launch Minecraft.

Once Minecraft is launched go to the Multiplayer tab.

Once in the multiplayer tab, click Add Server.

Once this is done you should see your server made and trying to connect. If you have a failed connection, check the ip address you entered as well as the port forwarding settings. If you see a green connection bar with open spots to connect to your server, you can launch in and enjoy playing in your very own custom server!

Playing On A Local Area Network

This requires opening your home or local area network to others who are also connected to that network. Here is how to connect for Minecraft: Java Edition.

  • Choose a host computer. This computer should be fast enough to play Minecraft, while running a server for other players as well.
  • Launch the game and click Single Player.
  • Create a new world or open an existing one.
  • Inside that world, press the Esc key, and click Open to LAN.
  • Choose a game mode to set for the other players. Tip: Survival is the default Minecraft mode, including life points and hunger. Creative mode allows you to fly and place an infinite number of blocks. Adventure mode is like Survival mode, but players cannot place or destroy blocks. You can also choose whether to turn cheats off or on.
  • Click Start LAN World, and you’ll see a message that a local game has been hosted. Other players on the same network who wish to join can now start their game, select Multiplayer, and their computers should automatically detect the game.

    Connecting To The Minecraft Server

    Freebuild SMP Minecraft Server
    • If you are playing on the same machine on which the server is running, select the “Multiplayer” option in the game client, click direct connect, and then type in localhost instead of an IP address.
    • Both hosting and playing on the same machine is not a recommended practice unless you have a powerful computer .
  • Users within your local network can connect using your internal IP address port forwarding is not required for such local connections. The internal IP address of a specific network adapter can be found by typing “ipconfig” into the command prompt and looking for the IPv4 address, or by using this website. If the port is set to a number other than 25565 in server.properties, that port must be included. This address will look something like 192.168.0.168:25565.
  • Users connecting from the Internet must connect using your external IP address. You must port forward for someone outside your network to connect to the server.

What Is The Server Ip For Powersmp

The server IP address for the Minecraft Server PowerSMP is play.powersmp.com. You can use this IP Address to start playing on the PowerSMP Minecraft Server now. This IP Address was updated directly by the server owner on the 25 of Jul at 04:11 EST, 2022 and is the most recent, accurate, and working IP Address you will find.

How To Identify Your Server Address

To get started, you need to identify the address of the server you want to join. If you own a Shockbyte server, you can find your server address on your Multicraft server panel . This will be labeled as “Server Address” as shown in the screenshot below.

In the example above, the server address is 192.168.2.1:12345. Breaking this down, the server IP is the set of numbers before the “:” symbol, and after this are the last five numbers which are the server port.

    Setting Up Server Properties

Now lets look at some server properties we can change to customize what kind of Minecraft game you want to play in your server. Open the server properties file.

Once here, you will see a lot of text sections. Lets cover the most important ones and look at the properties you will most likely want to change.

The properties highlighted in the above image are some of the most important ones you should be familiar with. The first gamemode=survival property determines the gamemode you and your players will play in the server by default. This is set to survival meaning you will have hunger and health you will have to manage in game. Setting this to gamemode=creative lets the players build, break, and fly as they are untouchable and unkillable in this gamemode.

The next spawn-monsters=true is a property that tells the server monsters and dangerous enemies will appear. Changing this to spawn-monsters=false will stop monsters from spawning even in survival mode.

One of the more important properties in our experience with minecraft servers is the next highlighted pvp=true line. PvP stands for player vs play so this controls whether or not players can damage each other. By default this is set to true meaning players can hurt and damage one another in game. Setting this to pvp=false will disable and ability for players to damage each other.

    Configuring The Minecraft Server

  • Configure the server by editing the server.properties file, the format for which is explained here. Be certain to edit the file with a text editor that does not add formatting , such as Windows Notepad. Additional configuration may not be necessary as many servers run fine from the default values.
  • To become or add an operator , type /op< targets> into the server console or gui. This adds the specified user’s username and UUID to the ops.json file. Operator status will not be changed if you change your username due to the use of UUID.
  • Administrators and operators may execute commands. In other words, operator privileges allow you to control certain aspects of the game .
  • ops.json contents:
  •

  • If your server.properties is configured to enable whitelist, you can add a user to the whitelist.json by typing /whitelist add < player> into the server console or gui. Due to the transition to the UUID system, it is not recommended to directly edit whitelist.json.
