How Much Is A Server

How to make a Minecraft Multiplayer server

The average cost to rent a small business dedicated server is $100 to $200/month. You can also setup a cloud server starting at $5/month, but most businesses would spend about $40/month to have adequate resources. If you wanted to purchase a server for your office, it may cost between $1000-$3000 for a small business.

Download And Start The Minecraft Server Software

It comes as a Java .jar file. Save it to the location you chose in the previous step.

Double-click the .jar file to start the server. Itll create the server configuration files, which need to be modified before the server is ready to use.

Accept the EULA: A text file called eula.txt was created. Open the file in a text editor and change eula=false to eula=true. Failing to accept the EULA will prevent you from starting the Minecraft server.

What if you see a Cant save server properties error? Run the Minecraft server as an administrator by right clicking the .jar file and selecting Run as administrator.

Creating A Server In Realms

1. Once you’re signed up for Realms, exit and relaunch “Java” and select “Minecraft Realms” from the main menu again. Click anywhere on the next screen to start customizing your first Realm.

2. Give your Realm a name, and add a description if you’d like, then click “Create.”

3. Set your world type and structure generation preferences, and enter a “seed” if you want to recreate a world layout you’re familiar with. Click “Create realm” to finalize.

For a lot of Minecraft players, it’s all about the mods.

However, if non-modded Minecraft is more than enough, or the idea of creating a server is such a headache that you’re willing to pay a small monthly fee, you can opt for “Minecraft Realms.”

“Realms” is a service where Mojang the company that makes “Minecraft” will build and provide you with a server. You don’t have to make it or run it, which is great if you don’t have the time, computer speed, or bandwidth to keep it constantly active.

Here’s how to use “Realms.”

Start The Minecraft Server

Adding Multiplayer Servers in Minecraft Learn @ Pongos

To start the Minecraft server, open the Windows command prompt.

Navigate to the file path where the Minecraft server file was installed.

Start the server with the following command:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui

If youd rather use the servers UI, exclude the nogui parameter:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar

You can also create a .bat file to batch the commands together.

Once the server is running, you can invite others to connect to your server via your local IP address if theyre on your home network, or via your external/public IP address if theyre not on your home network.

How To Setup A Minecraft: Java Edition Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home network’s configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. If you wish to purchase a small private server for friends, check out Minecraft Realms. If you still wish to set up your own private server, do so at your own risk as we cannot offer support for home networks or privately made servers.

Here is a guide to help you create a server so your friends can join and play together!

As a prerequisite, you should make sure you have Java installed and up to date on the computer that will host the server so it can run .jar files.

  • Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file
  • After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it Minecraft Server.
  • Drag over or copy and paste the .jar file into the Minecraft Server folder.
  • While you have the file browser open, open command prompt from the start menu.
  • You can check if Java is installed in command prompt by typing without quotes java -version.
  • To start the server, you will need to change the directory to the location where you have the Minecraft Server folder and the .jar file located in it.
  • You can find the directory in Windows by simply clicking on the browser directory in file browser here. Copy this address to your clipboard.
  • This should look like cd C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Minecraft Server
  • Install Minecraft Add Forge Mod Loader

In order to play on a Minecraft server, you need… Minecraft! If you’ve purchased Minecraft, you can download it at

It’ll download MinecraftInstaller.msi, launch it and follow the instructions to install it. Once installed, you will want to launch vanilla 1.12.2 at least once in order to install all the important stuff. Under the Installations tab, click + New, then under Versions, select 1.12.2. Select 1.12.2 from the drop down menu, and press PLAY. Once it fully loads to the menu screen, exit the game.

Next, you’ll want to download and install Forge, go to this link and click on Windows Installer.

Launch it, and click OK. Wait for it to install.

    Tweaking The Servers Properties

Open up the server.properties file in notepad. Youll see something like this:

    Youll see some important options.

    • level-name: This is the name of your Minecraft world. If you change this name, the server will look for a folder with a matching name, and if none is found, it will generate a new level with this name.
    • spawn-monsters: If set to false, monsters such as zombies, skeletons, and creepers will not spawn. Often turned off for op or creative servers, where everyone builds and survival is not the focus of gameplay.
    • spawn-animals: If set to false, animals such as wolves, cows, sheep, and chickens will not spawn.
    • pvp: If set to false, players will not be able to harm one another, although you can still inflict damage by pushing other players off of ledges.
    • white-list: If set to true, the server will only allows the usernames in the white-list.txt file to successfully connect and play.

For a complete description of all of the options, check out the Minecraft Wikis page on server.properties. Once youre done changing things to what you want, save the file.

Since its your server, be sure to add your Minecraft username in the ops.txt file. That way, youll be an operator with full admin rights. You can generate any item you want, ban players, make other players ops, and change the in-game time.

When youre ready, start up the server again.

Accept The End User License Agreement

How To Make A Minecraft Multiplayer Server (Tutorial)

Once you’ve double-clicked to open the Server, new files should appear in your folder called logs, eula, and a text document called server.

Open the EULA document and copy the link in the document. Paste this link in your browser to read through the End User License Agreement to ensure that your server does not and will not violate the terms and conditions.

Once you had read through the license agreement, go back to your text document and scroll down to the last line of text that reads: eula=false.

From that point, you will need to ensure that you change this to read:

    eula=true

Be sure to save this document before continuing. By not saving, the rest of the process will not work correctly.

Create A Folder Download The Jar File

Once you’ve gotten Minecraft Java and the latest version of Java, you can get started on that server. For simplicitys sake, you should create a folder for all your files.

  • Right-click your desktop, scroll down to New, and select Folder.

  • Give this folder a name of your choosing. For this example, lets simply name it Server.

  • Now, you must grab additional key files, including the server JAR file. Fortunately Mojang Studios, Minecraft’s developer, hosts the files.

Get The Latest Version Of Java

The first step in setting up a Minecraft server is making sure you have the latest version of Java installed. Minecraft requires Java to run the game and having the latest version will help us run our server without issues.

You can install the latest version of Java here. Once there, click the red Java Download button as you can see below:

Then, read and accept the terms by clicking the red Agree and Start Free Download button.

The Java setup run file should now be in the download folder of your computer. If you need help with finding the download folder, type in downloads into your computer search bar and open the Downloads folder.

Once in the downloads folder find the JavaSetup executable file and run this application. A popup window may appear asking if the application can make changes to your computer. Click to allow access, you may be asked to provide a password for these permissions.

Once the application loads click to install Java.

You may be asked to uninstall a previous Java version, do so as keeping an older version does not help with our server setup.

Once any previous versions are removed continue through the window prompts until Java is downloaded and up to date.

The first step in setting up a Minecraft server should now be complete. The following step we must take is downloading and setting up the actual Minecraft server folder.

    What Is A Minecraft Server

A server is a combination of hardware and software platforms that allows developers and administrators to run their websites, complex applications, and virtual online worlds.

It’s basically a powerful computer launched remotely on one of the hundreds of data centers around the globe. It is online 24/7, and runs a special software that makes it possible for multiple users to access the web services or gaming realms residing on its hard drive.

Minecraft servers are more targeted. At a technical level, they are not too different from any VDS or dedicated servers. The real difference is in the software that they run.

These specialised servers are made to create unique Minecraft worlds online, allowing people to play together, change the rules of the game and communicate with each other.

Why You Shouldn’t Host Your Server For Free

Yes, you can host your Minecraft server for free. But we would strongly advise against doing so.

    • Free hosting providers are typically slow and unreliable. Donât you want your virtual world to be alive and well at all times? Free hosting would definitely spoil the whole experience with its poor performance.

    • If youâre not paying money, the provider has no obligation towards you. So, if at any point they decide to shut down your virtual world, they can do so without asking and thereâs nothing you can do about it.

    • One other way that free hosting providers will make money is by selling your personal data. Not all of them do it, but do you really want to take that risk?

    • The hardware restrictions of free hosting will limit you dramatically. You wonât be able to invite as many friends to play as you wish, and youâll have severe limitations on how many materials, constructions, and NPCs you can add.

If you wanted to start your own Minecraft server to have unlimited creative freedom and a reliable platform, a free server will only lead to disappointment.

Luckily, thereâs another option you can use.

How To Create A Minecraft Server On Windows Mac Or Linux Systems

Lets start with the basics. Setting up the actual server will take a little technical know-how. You need to understand, at least at a fundamental level, how a server and a network function, and you ought to be comfortable with command lines as well as the hardware youre using.

    Some questions people ask include:

Do I need a specific type of computer to run a Minecraft server?

No. You dont need a special computer, but youll likely do better setting it up on a desktop.

Can I run the server and play the game on the same computer?

Sure, with an explanation. Its possible to run the server and play the game on the same machine, but you need to have a pretty powerful system to get the best possible performance.

Can I run a Minecraft server over a wireless connection?

This is not recommended. A wired connection is far more reliable and preferable.

Do I need any specialized hardware?

You could purchase server hardware, but a virtual private server or a dedicated server is a much simpler way to go. You wont have the hassle of maintaining your hardware, and its a scalable solution, in case you need more server power. Also, having a hosted server means there is no risk of exposing your network to the world.

With these points in mind, here are the steps you will take in setting up your Minecraft server, in a broad sense:

  • Install the newest version of Java on your computer.
  • Configure your network and the server.
  • Run the server.
  • Make sure you can access the server.

If your friend is running a private server, either from their own PC or through third-party hosting services, you’ll need the server’s IP address. Copy and paste it as you would a public server address to join.

If you’re not sure how to find an IP address for a public server, it’s covered in How to Join a Minecraft Server.

    Startup And Maintenance Script

Alternatively, you can manage/automate the startup and shutdown of the Minecraft server using a script such as the ones listed below:

Port forwarding is used when you have a router and you wish to let users connect to your server through it. If you wish to host your server for local reasons, it is not required that you do so. Keep in mind that port forwarding might cause security risks.

When port forwarding, it varies on how your router will ask you for the information. If you don’t understand on how your router wants you to input the information, try visiting PortForward.com for a tutorial.

Once you have managed to locate your router’s admin page, and find the Port Forwarding page hit add new service or custom service. When you get a page asking to setup the new rule, it should prompt you on what you want to call it. You may name it as you wish, but for simplicity, name it “minecraft“. Then, you want to look for “type”. If “TCP/UDP” or “Both” isn’t an option you will have to create two rules for both protocols. For the ports , enter 25565. If it asks for anything else other than output IP , leave it alone and continue.

To find your computer’s IP address, use the following steps:

    Windows

Now it is time to configure and connect.

Point A Domain At Your Minecraft Server

Providing players with an easy-to-remember domain name instead of a complicated IP address makes it even easier for people to connect to your Minecraft server.

Its super simple: Update your domains DNS records by adding an A record for your domain , or subdomain , that points to your Minecraft servers IP address.

Note that it can take up to ~24 hours for DNS changes to take effect globally.

If youre not sure how to change DNS records, take a look at this Help article for adding an A record.
