How To Code Minecraft!

Kids who are interested in coding and Minecraft have the opportunity to combine both of their interests through Minecraft modding.

A great free website is Microsofts Makecode. There is a place for your child to watch tutorials about how to use the interface and how to get started creating projects. It allows your child to program three different ways depending on their comfort level. Lava tower is a really cool option to start as well as flower trail. The tutorials are engaging and offer flexibility for your child to try out different programming languages.

Another great website to use is Learn to Mod. This is a paid site, unless provided to your child through their school or a class that gives them a class code. This is the platform Create & Learn uses to teach Minecraft modding.

Your child can program using blocks or Javascript. Learn to Mod also provides tutorials, where kids earn badges, and has its own simulator to run the tutorials. It also motivates kids to keep learning through a diamond economy that they can use to purchase more features.

Youll need a PC or Mac computer for this tutorial, as Chromebooks or mobile devices will not run the software properly.

At CodaKid we have taught over 50,000 students Minecraft coding, and have won numerous industry awards for online courses including a Parents Choice Gold Award and CODiE Finalist for Best Coding and Computational Thinking Solution.

While we teach coding for kids, this guide can be used by teachers, parents, or anyone with an interest in creating a custom Sword Mod for Minecraft Forge.

We hope that you enjoy this free step by step guide to covering one of the first courses we teach in our Minecraft Modding series.

Well cover the very basics of what youll need to start Minecraft modding, and you will learn how to use Java, one of the most popular programming languages in the world.

Well also teach you how to download and use the Eclipse IDE, a text editor used by professional developers at companies such as Facebook, Google, and Amazon.

Can Minecraft Teach My Kid To Code

Minecraft has proven to be a flexible platform for education. It has been used as a tool for teaching a myriad of concepts, so it makes sense to assume it would be useful for teaching coding to kids. And it is!

Minecraft does a great job of providing an environment to learn coding in by giving students both a place to virtually meet with their educators and by visually showing them the effects that coding can have. But it isnt as simple as launching the game and letting the kids learn. Instead, it works best as one of many tools used in a more complete coding curriculum.

As part of our interactive coding curriculum we teach our students how to create their very own games based off of Minecraft. Theyre able to learn programming in an exciting hands-on environment that does more than teach them the basic principles. It teaches them how to apply them. And unlike so many video-based programs, our coding classes for elementary, middle, and high school, are taught by live teachers so our students can get feedback on their projects in real-time.

The main thing is this: Minecraft on its own will not be able to teach a kid how to code. Rather, it is a great way to build their interest in coding and can be useful as an educational tool in a well-crafted curriculum.

Understand This Before You Start

Minecraft is coded in Java. Everything we do will have to do with the Java programming language. If you never coded anything before, or you dont understand the Java programming language, you need to learn it before you can developer great Minecraft plugins. Yes, this tutorial is designed as a jumpstart right into production and we will not cover how Java works in general, but for most people you need to learn it simultaneously if you are serious about your progress.

Is Minecraft A Good Coding Introduction For Kids

The real key to teaching a child coding is finding the right motivation. Minecraft offers that as it combines a fun game they love, with a gentle introduction to coding functionality.

The way Minecraft engrosses kids can be used to help engage them to learn about something useful in a fun way that doesnt feel like work.

Minecraft can be enhanced by modifications that are outside strings of code that changes the game from the inside, such as generating monsters, giving players increased health or items and even telling the non-playable characters to do specific things.

These mods are usually downloaded through a third-party website, with players sharing their own mods among the online community for everyone to use, but you can easily create your own mods to enhance your own gaming experience exactly how you want it.

Because of the relative simplicity of Minecraft as a game, learning how to modify it is a good steppingstone to learning to manipulate and create code for other games and programs.

What If I Want To Create My Own Minecraft Mods

With todays technology coding your own mods is pretty simple. One option is to use Java and Forge. Youll need to install several things. First youll need to install Java – to be able to run and test your code, Forge – to run the mods in Minecraft, a text editor – to create the code, and obviously Minecraft. For more information about that you can visit this Tutorials/Creating Forge mods Gamepedia page. The other option is to use a website that does most of the work. LearnToMod is a website that sends the mods directly to your own server without the need to install anything extra. These mods run in a multiplayer server that you can start from within the website. This is the website we use to run our Minecraft modding classes.

What Is Modding And Why Should You Care

Modding is jargon for modifying or altering Minecraft in some way. For example, if you want a block in Minecraft to look like a magic carpet and float like one, you can do that. There are many kinds of mods with varying levels of complexity. Superficial changes like making rainbow-colored chickens can be done with no coding, while deeper changes that govern the behavior of actors or even generate worlds procedurally can be done with code.

Players love mods as a way to express themselves among the community. As they build mods and add-ons for Minecraft, theyll learn to code, think critically, and write programs. They will see coding as a tool they can use to bring anything in their imagination to life.

Since coding is the primary method that kids use to make mods in Minecraft, kids learn and apply programming fundamentals like repetition, conditionals, functions, and variables to make mods and games that they can show off and play with their friends. Kids are incredibly motivated to learn to mod because it allows them to do so much more in Minecraft and truly customize worlds to be their own.
