Setting Up A Simple Vanilla Minecraft Server

There are two ways to approach installing the simple vanilla Mojang-supplied Minecraft server. One method is very Windows-centric as you simply download an .EXE file and run it, with a convenient little graphical user window. That method doesnt necessarily help OS X and Linux users however, so were going to use the .JAR based method which will help expand the process across all the platforms with only very minor tweaks necessary to shift between operating systems.

The first order of business is to download the official Minecraft server JAR file. As of this tutorial the version is 1.7.10. You can find it at the bottom of . Regardless of your operating system, you want the .JAR file.

After the file has finished downloading, move the .JAR file to a more permanent location. We placed the file in a /HTG Test Server/. You can place it anywhere you want but label it clearly, place it somewhere safe, and be aware that once you run the .JAR file all the server-related stuff will be downloaded/unpacked in folder the .JAR is located in, so dont place it somewhere like a drive root or a home folder.

Execute the server for the first time by running the following command at the command prompt from the directory the .JAR file is located in, of course:

Windows: java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.1.7.10.jar nogui

OS X: java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar minecraft_server. 1.7.10.jar nogui

Linux: java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar minecraft_server. 1.7.10.jar nogui

How To Setup Minecraft Server In A Local Pc

Step 1 Download and install Java

Go to and download Java

Step 2 Install Java

Double click the downloaded file and follow the screen to install

Step 3 Download the Minecraft Game

Go to and download minecraft_server.x.x.x.jar file

Step 4 Create a Game folder

Create a new folder under D driver or any folder for the game file.

D:\Minecraft\

Copy and paste the downloaded file server.jar to the created folder.

Step 5 Run the game

Start the server by double-clicking the .jar file which will generate configuration files. Make necessary modifications before the server gets ready for use

Open eula.txt file and replace eula=false with eula=true which is mandatory to start the Minecraft server.

You might encounter an error alerting that the server properties cant be saved. In that instance, right-click .jar file Run as an administrator that will enable you to run the Minecraft server as an administrator.

Step 6 Play the game and Enjoy

Run the Game and go to multiplayer mode.

• The user who hasnt yet installed the Java or is using the outdated version can download it from the website

Updating

• Open Programs tab in your Windows Control Panel and search Java. Click Update Now
• Open Command Prompt and get the Java version number by typing Java-version.

Note: After installation, you would need to restart the computer

An Easier Way Of Sharing Your Server With External Users

• Download ngrok from. Youll need to sign up for a free account as well and follow their setup instructions.
• Open ngrok.com website and sign up for free. It is a tool to will make your server visible over the internet
• Now Start your Minecraft and run following in terminal for sharing the local Minecraft server

ngrok tcp 25565

• You will see the following message

Forwarding tcp://ngrok.com:12345 -> localhost:25565

Note that the 12345 stands for a unique number for you to establish a connection. Note it down

It will make your server visible over the net

• Request the friend to start Minecraft and click Multiplayer
• Next, click Direct Connect
• Now enter the following line

ngrok.com:12345

Where 12345 should be replaced with the unique number that you noted in the earlier step

• Thats all. Your friend is now connected and you can play

Note: An alternative to Direct Connect is Add Server followed by ngrok.com:12345

Purple Prison Ip: Purpleprisonnet

Purple Prison is the only server on this list that does not actually require a modified client in order to join the server. Instead, the server itself is actually heavily modified through the use of server side plugins.

On this server, the game mode is OP Prison. Players start with protection 10 diamond armor right away and are rewarded with an enchanted diamond pickaxe with efficiency 19 just by joining the server.

Purple Prison is a great server for those who do not want to directly modify their game client but still want to enjoy a highly modified Minecraft experience.

Players can use any version of Minecraft they want – from 1.7 to the latest supported – to connect to this server.

How To Setup Minecraft Server On Linux

Add the new minecraft user to the sudo group.

• Create a new user for the Minecraft server and add it to the sudo group with following

sudo usermod -aG sudo Minecraft user

• install the wget package

• Install Java with these steps

sudo apt install openjdk-8-jdk -y

sudo java version

• Creating a new directory as a repository for Minecraft server files

sudo mkdir minecraftdir

• For moving to the Minecraft directory

cd minecraftdir

• You will now need to download the Minecraft server.

sudo wget -O minecraft_server.jar https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.11.2/minecraft_server.1.11.2.jar

• Allocate required permission to make the downloaded Minecraft t server executables

sudo chmod +x minecraft_server.jar

sudo vi eula.txt and add Eula=true to agree to the license agreement conditions

Start Minecraft server

• Start Minecraft server with the following command

sudo java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

Note: 1024 M refers to the allocated memory you can change with your preferred value)

• Stop command will stop the currently running Minecraft server)

stop

• For running Java command sudo java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
• For exiting screen window press

CTRL+A+D

• For returning to the screen

sudo screen -r

• Voila the Minecraft server has been successfully installed on your Ubuntu.

Install Forge Server Accept Eula

In order to start hosting a server, you need these files. Reopen the Forge installer and select Install Server, and the location you want it to be installed.Now that its been installed, double click on forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2838-universal.jar to launch it. once you do that, the folders logs, mods, and eula.txt will appear in the folder.

Double click on the eula.txt to open it, and change the false to true. ctrl+s or click File then Save, then close the txt. Once that’s done, relaunch the .jar. You’ll see a bunch more files appear in the Server folder, and a window open up titled Minecraft server. Congrats! You now have a local modded Minecraft server! But we’re not here for that, we’re trying to create a server that anyone can connect to. Close the Minecraft server window.

Port Forward The Server

The server now works locally! Anyone on the same IP as yours can now join the server. In order to allow people not on the same IP to connect,you’ll need to port forward your server. To do this, google Whats my IP? on Google. Take the number it gives you, copy it, and paste it into the address bar. This will most likely take you to your router’s website where you can manage your router’s settings. Enter the password to your router to continue. My router is a Linksys, you’ll want to google around to find the steps with your specific router. You’ll want to find the Port Range Forwarding section of your router, and enter in the following information.

Be Careful Before You Host A Minecraft Server

If you decide to create a self-hosted Minecraft server, you need to be careful about who you share it with.

When you invite someone to your Minecraft server, you’ll have to share your computer’s IP address. If that information falls into the wrong hands, someone can use your IP address to find out where you live and even try to hack into your computer.

If you’re hosting a Minecraft server by yourself, you’re going to need a good computer too.

Let’s say you’re only going to invite up to 4 other players to your server. You should at least have 1GB of RAM, at least 150MB of storage, and an Intel Core Duo or AMD Athlon 64 x2 CPU on your computer.

Keep in mind that you’ll need better specifications if you’re also planning on using the same computer to play.

You’ll also need to take mods into consideration. Modifications, better known as “mods” are what players use to turn Minecraft into basically anything they want.

To use mods, you’ll need to download them from a trusted source. CurseForge.com is a great place to start, but you can download them from other sites as well. Keep in mind that if you download a mod from an untrusted source, you risk getting a virus.

Not using mods is also an option. You can create your own “modless” Minecraft server, better known as vanilla, that’ll only have the tools and features the original Minecraft has.

Root Access To Your Server

The instructions assume that you have root access to your server. For simplicity I assume you are logging in as the root user. All of these commands will also work with sudo. If running sudo from your user account then make sure to add it when necessary. I will not be using sudo in front of these command line arguments throughout the document.

    apt update & &  apt -y upgrade

    apt install screen

    cd /opt    mkdir minecraft    cd minecraft

Now download the version 1.12.2 Forge Installer. Pick the Latest Installer file and copy it to your /opt/minecraft folder.

You should now have only one jar file in your /opt/minecraft folder.

Tip: If connecting to your server from a Windows based pc, use Filezilla or WinSCP to transfer the files to your Linux server

    java -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854-installer.jar --installServer

Now run the newly created forge jar file as follows

    assuming a server with 2048MB         cd /opt/minecraft & &  java -Xms1024M -Xmx2000M -jar /opt/minecraft/forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854.jar nogui  

For example, on a VPS with 1GB of ram I have set xms and xmx to 512M and 1008M respectively. So start the JVM with 512MB of ram and let it grow to just under 1GB max.

b) accept the EULA. The first time you try to run your minecraft server you will be required to accept the EULA.

Depending on how you are setting up your mods, you may need to install a Minecraft server that can load mods. If you are installing mods into a pre-existing modded server, continue to the next section, as it should have Forge or Cauldron. If youre building a server from scratch, decide if youd like to use Forge or Cauldron. Forge is the original Minecraft server that can only load Forge mods. Cauldron its a server optimized brand of Forge that also works with Bukkit plugins and has Spigot patches. Cauldron is a more feature rich and powerful system.
