Chromebooks arent really designed for gaming theyre for learning and work. And games like Minecraft cant normally run on Chromebooks. In fact, even though the game has been developed for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, Minecraft developers say it that their game will never be fully compatible with Chrome OS. This could present Chromebook users who want to play one of the most popular games in the world with a problem.
If you want to learn how to play Minecraft on Chromebook, keep reading for a workaround that uses Linux.
Can Minecraft Run On A Chromebook
What is Minecraft? Developed by the Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios, Minecraft is one of the most popular video games in the world. Till 2021, this sandbox video game has over 200 million of users and the active users monthly are over 140 million.
What is a Chromebook? It is a popular device that can be worked as a computer/laptop, but its more portable and easy-to-use. Choosing And Buying A Chromebook To Play Minecraft
A lot of people buy a Chromebook just for the sole purpose of playing Minecraft, believe it or not.
Youd be surprised. Just check the comments on this guide and you can see many different readers whove got Minecraft working on a variety of different Chromebook models.
With the game being so popular among the younger crowd, and the fact that these laptops are distributed in schools all over the nation, its like a perfect pairing.
These machines can run Minecraft pretty decently even if theyre powered by Intel HD graphics. The graphics processor is indeed onboard and integrated, but it has enough power to run Minecraft at playable frame rates.
Intel HD Graphics is capable of running the game at a smooth 30FPS and onwards even for older laptops. If you own an older model, youll likely have 2GB of RAM with an Intel Pentium or Celeron processor. This is decent and will run the game smoothly at around 30-40FPS.
Newer models are even better.
If youre looking for a newer Chromebook, youll notice that a lot of the newer devices now come with 4GB of RAM. This is pretty much the new standard and its way better in terms of performance and getting better FPS out of your device.
Theyre still loaded with Intel HD Graphics, but they have newer and faster chips so theyll be able to run the game like butter.
They also tend to have much better specs than older versions and theyre updated pretty often even if its the same model in a series. The newer the better for playing games.
Are There Special Requirements
This version of Minecraft wont cost you anything, although you also wont get it just for personal use. You need an Office 365 education account to play, and youll mostly get that through the schools Microsoft 365 for Education license. Microsoft does hope to support Google sign-ins for those willing to link accounts.
Its a particularly timely release. Some students are still participating in school at home while the COVID-19 pandemic continues, and Minecraft lets them learn in a low-stress virtual world where they can still socialize with teachers and fellow kids.
Of course, theres also a practical angle for Microsoft. Chromebooks have had a major presence in classrooms for years, and this gives Microsoft a way to spur 365 sign-ups and puts its best-known game on the map for schools without Windows PCs. Still, its hard to complain about the cynical motivations if this gets children more interested in STEM and keeps them engaged no matter where their classes take place.

Open the Settings app on your Chromebook by clicking on the time at the right bottom corner of the screen, on the status bar, and clicking the Settings icon.
Click on the Apps tab. If your Chromebook supports Google Play Store, you will see the option listed on the Apps screen. Click the Turn on button next to the Google Play Store option.

1. Before moving ahead, make sure you have set up Linux on your Chromebook. To explain briefly, open Settings and click on Advanced in the left pane to expand the menu. Which Intel Processor Specifically
The majority of Chromebooks made by Acer, Asus, and HP are all powered by Intel-based processors.
Intel Celeron and Pentium processors are more than enough to handle Minecraft, however, upgrading to an i3 or i5 is a smart move if you plan to do serious gaming on your laptop.
Do a quick search on your specific model and check out what processor it has. If its any type of Intel CPU, youre good to go. Ive also compiled a list of some cheap Chromebooks under $200, and most of them can run Minecraft provided it uses an Intel CPU.
There are some models that are powered by ARM processors, and may not work with this tutorial, let alone be able to run Minecraft with any tutorial unless some hardcore system tweaking is performed. These are usually found in Samsung Chromebooks, so these should be avoided.
However, for the majority of users, this guide should work well.
The most popular models are all powered by an Intel processor, mainly Celeron with Intel HD graphics, so this guide should apply to the majority of users who want to play Minecraft on their laptop.
If you have a different processor other than Intel, I strongly suggest that you proceed with caution and note that that the following steps may not be applicable to your Chromebook. Tread carefully.
