Firewalling Nats And External Ip Addresses

You must open a TCP/UDP port on the firewall.
If the server in question is not reachable via a globally routable IP address, you will need to add appropriate address and/or port number translation rules to the gateway usually your router has the global IP address.

Select your router from that list, skip the ad that comes after selecting the device, and you will see instructions for setting up port forwarding. Verify the port is open, and note your external IP by using a port checker tool, such as You Get Signal. The default port you should test is 25565, unless you specified something else. Have the Minecraft server running when you test the port.

Allow The Port On Your Firewall

To ensure that the server works correctly, you will need to allow the Minecraft port number via your firewall. In this section, we will go over the process on three operating systems Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Firewall Management on Windows

Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.

Click on Inbound Rules and select New Rule.

Choose Port and click Next.

Select TCP, and enter the Minecraft port number. In this case, its 25565. Once done, click Next.

Select Allow connection and click the Next button until the final step. Before clicking Finish, give your rule a name, like in this example:

After you have created the rule, make a new one with the same configuration, just for UDP.

Firewall Management on macOS

Go to System Preferences and select Security & Privacy.

Choose Firewall and click on the Firewall Options button.

If the option is grayed out, select the lock icon on the lower-left corner to unlock Firewall Options.

Click Add, find the installed Java application, and confirm the selection. Make sure that the Allow incoming connections option is checked.

Start The Minecraft Server

How to Setup a Modded Minecraft Server (1.12.2) : 6 Steps

To start the Minecraft server, open the Windows command prompt.

Navigate to the file path where the Minecraft server file was installed.

Start the server with the following command:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui

If youd rather use the servers UI, exclude the nogui parameter:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar

You can also create a .bat file to batch the commands together.

Once the server is running, you can invite others to connect to your server via your local IP address if theyre on your home network, or via your external/public IP address if theyre not on your home network.

Download The Minecraft Server Software

Open TextEdit. Set the format to plain text. Enter the following:

Configure The Minecraft Server

After installing Java, Screen, and wget, you can set up the Minecraft server by following these steps:

Create a new folder to store all your Minecraft configuration files by running this command:

Move to the newly created Minecraft server folder by entering:

One of the most frustrating elements of the Minecraft local multiplayer experience is that the original game host has to be active to access previous creations. If there are two parents and two kids playing Minecraft in a household for example, and they spend a few hours one weekend working on a big structure hosted by Kid #2, then anytime anyone wants to work on that world/structure again they need Kid #2 to fire up their game and share it with everyone else by opening it to the LAN. Factor in that each world resides on each separate computer and suddenly it becomes a real hassle for more than one person to work on a given map.

A much more efficient way to go about doing things is to host a stand-alone server on the local network. This way players can come and go as they please without any one person needing to log in and share their world. How To Setup Minecraft On Windows

If you dont want to set up a remote Minecraft server, you can do so locally on your computer. The process of setting up a dedicated Minecraft server will depend on your operating system. It can be done if your computer meets the hardware and system requirements.

The following steps will guide you through setting up a Minecraft server on Windows:

Open the command prompt by pressing Win + R and entering cmd. Then, check the version of Java installed on your computer using the following command:

java -version

Minecraft and its servers require Java SE Development Kit 17.0.1 or higher. If you have it, proceed to the next step. Otherwise, download the Java installer from an official source.

Download the Minecraft Java edition server software from the official Minecraft page.

Important! A warning message may pop up when you download the server .jar file. This is normal and safe as long as youve obtained the file from a credible source.

Requirements To Host A Minecraft Server

If you are already running Minecraft 1.18 on your PC, the requirements might not seem too demanding. Based on the latest edition of the game, we recommend the following specifications for hosting a server with 4-6 players:

Windows 10 or 11
2 GBs of RAM or more
A reliable internet connection with 5 MB/sec or faster internet speed
Enough power supply to keep the PC running as long as the server is online

Please note that usually Minecraft only transfers around 100-150 MB of data on a non-modded server per hour. Therefore, you can host it on PCs with lower specs and slower internet speeds. Setting Your Server Port And Other Values

After accepting the EULA by editing the eula.txt, start your server again with the .bat file. This will create a number of files and folders that are required to use your server, among others the server.properties file. Find the following line:

server-port=25565

This is the server-port value. If you change this to something different, you will have to type the port after your IP when you join the server in the Minecraft client. For example, you’d have to type :25569 if you changed the port to 25569. If you leave it the default value of 25565, Minecraft will recognize that automatically. Another option would be to use a DNS SRV record and have a registered domain name.

If there’s no obvious reason to change the port, I recommend leaving it on 25565. The most common reason for changing the server port is to run multiple Minecraft servers on one VPS.
