Firstly, you need to ensure you have the Netherite tool you desire, but in Diamond form. Want a Netherite Sword? Make a Diamond Sword first. Simple.

To upgrade it to Netherite, you need to get your hands on a Smithing Table. This is a block that has been in the game for over a year, but until now has had no functionality except to provide a job for a Villager. Now however, Smithing Tables are crucial to create Netherite equipment.

You can craft a Smithing Table with two Iron Ingots at the top of a 3×3 crafting grid, with four wooden planks below them, taking up a 2×3 space in total. Alternatively, you can take them from villages.

To turn your Diamond equipment into Netherite, you need to have one single Netherite Ingot. Use the Smithing Table, put your Diamond tool on the left-most square, and the ingot on the next. This will create a Netherite tool, which is stronger, faster, and more durable than anything Diamond. What’s interesting is that in the pre-release of the Nether Update, creating a Netherite tool would repair all durability but not carry over enchantments, but now it works in the opposite way. Enchantments will carry over, but you’ll need to repair it with an anvil to fix the durability.

Upgrading Gear To Netherite

Now that players have acquired all of the prerequisite materials, they can upgrade their gear to netherite.

To do this, they will have to place their smithing table and enter it. Gamers can then place any diamond item in the first slot of the table and a netherite ingot in the second. The result will be a netherite version of the selected gear, guaranteed to be more robust and effective.

Upgrading gear to netherite will keep all of the enchantments that were on the diamond gear. Due to the rarity of netherite, players are recommended to upgrade only their most favored of tools. It will also retain the same durability as the previous piece of gear.

Upgrading using the smithing table does not require XP, which sets it apart from the XP draining Anvil.

Getting A Netherite Ingot

This video takes place in one of the early snapshots of the update, so some of the info is inaccurate now.

In order to get a Netherite Ingot, there are a couple steps players will need to take. First, they will need to find some Ancient Debris, and this is the hardest part. Ancient Debris spawns very low in The Nether, some estimate at or below Y=20 , and requires a diamond pickaxe to mine. Players will need to strip mine while avoiding the pools of fast flowing lava in order to get this stuff. Ancient Debris can be smelted into Netherite Scraps in the furnace, which can then be crafted into Netherite Ingots using four Netherite Scraps and four Gold Ingots.

Making A Netherite Ingot

Once you’ve amassed the required amount of ancient debris, throw it into a furnace so that it can turn into netherite scraps.

IT REALLY ADDS UP: Adding insult to injury, it requires eight scraps of rare scraps to make just one netherite ingot!

For each piece of ancient debris you get one netherite scrap, but youll need four scraps of netherite and gold to make a netherite ingot.

Luckily you’ll also find collections of gold in the Nether.

How To Make Netherite Armor And Tools

To make Netherite Armor and tools, you need to upgrade Diamond Armor and tools in a Smithing Table. You can’t create Netherite equipment in the same way as you can with other materials.

To upgrade a Diamond tool or piece of armor into Netherite, simply place the Diamond item into the first slot of the Smithing Table, and a Netherite Ingot into the second slot. Then retrieve the Netherite item that appears in the output slot.

This works for the four Netherite Armor pieces as well as the Sword, Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, and Hoe.
