How to Make a Daylight Sensor in Minecraft: 7 Steps

Minecraft daylight sensors are items that can be used to generate Redstone power depending on the time of day.

Regular daylight sensors will generate power during the day and will have no output at night. They will only generate power using the day and night cycle and will not use light sources such as torches or luminescent blocks.

Players can select the daylight sensor after it has been placed to invert its timeframe. Instead of producing an output during the day, it will start generating power after dark.

A single daylight sensor is only available to players through crafting. The crafting recipe requires three glass blocks, three pieces of nether quartz, and three pieces of any wood slab.

The glass blocks should be placed on the top row in the crafting table. A single piece of nether quartz can then be placed in each square of the middle row. Wood labs should go in the bottom row regardless of the type of wood used. A player could use three different wood slabs, and it would still make a daylight sensor in Minecraft.

If a player needs to move things around, daylight sensors can be mined with any type of tool or without tools at all. However, it will only drop as a regular daylight sensor at despawn. If it’s inverted, it will still drop as a regular daylight sensor.

  • Break the block, leaving behind the trap door
  • Place the regular block one space back, and add the Redstone torch
  • Add a button/lever to the top of the regular block
  • Throw your Ender Pearl into the water by standing right above it
  • Any time the button or lever on top of the block is activated, you will be transported.

Add The Daylight Sensor Items To The Menu

In the crafting table, add the 3 nether quartz, 3 glass, and 3 wood slabs of your choice to the grid. In this tutorial, we’ll be using oak wood slabs.

You must add the items to the grid exactly as shown in the image below. In the 1st row place down 1 redstone torch in the 2nd box. In the 1st row place down the 3 glass. In the 2nd row place down the 3 nether quartz. And in the 3rd row place down the 3 wood slabs. This is the Minecraft daylight sensor recipe.

Using A Daylight Detector

Shown above are three different daylight detectors in use. Two are in daylight mode, and one in nighttime mode. The latter is not powering the Redstone lamp because it is daylight, not nighttime.

Both the daylight detectors in daylight mode are powering the lamps. To turn a daylight detector back and forth between nighttime and daylight mode, players must right-click them.

    There is no way to change the state of a daylight sensor without right clicking on it or using command blocks.

    If you want to keep the light always on you could use a redstone block or redstone torch, or you could use two daylight sensors with an OR gate if you want to turn off the lamp during the morning and evening.

    1.16.2 added one of my favorite new features: ender pearls are affected by bubble columns. That means you can very easily hold them in stasis indefinitely, and use a piston or trapdoor to activate them with a redstone signal.

    The simplest application of this is for exploration. With minimal setup, you can travel as far from your base as you want, and teleport back AS LONG AS YOUR BASE IS CHUNK LOADED. The easiest way to ensure chunks are loaded is to build your base on top of spawn.

    All you need is soul sand, water, redstone dust, a piston, a daylight detector, a bed, and an ender pearl.

    Dig a 1×1 hole at least 7 blocks deep with soul sand at the bottom and fill the hole from the bottom up with 7 water source blocks. You can’t just place one at the top and let it flow down, because the bubble column only exists in source blocks.

    Put a piston next to the hole, facing it.

    Put a daylight detector near the piston, leaving exactly 6 blocks between them and connect them with redstone dust.

    Right click the daylight detector to invert it, so it produces a signal at night.

    Now your setup is complete. All you need to do now is get an ender pearl and aim straight down into the bubble column as close to the center as possible. Sneaking helps you get as close to the edge without falling.

    Then throw it.

    Now you can explore as much as you want with virtually no danger. As long as you stay out of caves and away from pillager outposts.
