What Equipment Will We Need

Learn To Code Your Own Minecraft Mods!

I am so glad you asked this question!

We dont need anything state of the art BUT at a minimum you will need a FAST and RESPONSIVE desktop or laptop computer. You should not have to wait an age and a day for a webpage to load. You will also need a pair of headphones, a microphone and an external mouse.

Finally you will need a RELIABLE internet connection we suggest a minimum of 10mbps download and upload speed.

How Do I Get Minecraft Mods

There are probably thousands of websites that host Minecraft mods. One of the most popular sites is minecraftmods.com. It is important to note that the great majority of mods need forge. Forge is a program that allows users to install and run mods in Minecraft.

As a side note, before you start downloading and installing things on your computer, make sure that you have an antivirus installed and that it is up to date. Also, when browsing for mods always choose the ones that have good reviews.

Codeorg Minecraft Hour Of Code

Java and Python are both great languages to learn, but they are far from the only ones out there. If youre interested in learning JavaScript instead, Minecraft Hour of Code through Code.org might be exactly what youre looking for.

Hour of Code doesnt actually use the Minecraft game to teach coding. Instead, it is coding Minecraft characters using the Blockly editor created by Google and MIT. Blockly is a drag-and-drop JavaScript editor that allows a student to use pre-made blocks of code to solve different challenges. Each block uses real JavaScript code that the student can view to get a better picture of what is happening behind the scenes.

It is a gamified way of teaching coding that uses the Minecraft theme to great effect. And its a lot of fun!

You can find more gamified methods of coding education on our list of coding for kids free resources.

What Coding Languages Do You Teach

Our philosophy is to teach Code and Logic, not a specific coding language. There are, of course, thousands of different languages with some languages being better for some tasks than others. However, we want RocketHour students to understand the principles that underly all coding languages allowing them to develop into flexible, intelligent coders.

Of course, we must work with specific languages to teach these foundational principles. We have therefore spent thousands of hours selecting languages based on their ability to EDUCATE.

We work primarily with MITs Scratch, LiveCode and Python .

Teaches Fundamentals Of Computer Science

Learning to code is fun and easy with this Minecraft tutorial

Theres a lot to learn with minecraft the Java language, various computer science concepts such as conditionals, variables, randomization and more.

We looked for courses that didnt just just explain how to create a certain item, merely going through the coding procedure and syntax, but looked for courses that explain to kids the concepts behind the code, connect fun game goals with learning goals to improve and deepen learning.

Can Minecraft Teach My Kid To Code

Minecraft has proven to be a flexible platform for education. It has been used as a tool for teaching a myriad of concepts, so it makes sense to assume it would be useful for teaching coding to kids. And it is!

Minecraft does a great job of providing an environment to learn coding in by giving students both a place to virtually meet with their educators and by visually showing them the effects that coding can have. But it isnt as simple as launching the game and letting the kids learn. Instead, it works best as one of many tools used in a more complete coding curriculum.

As part of our interactive coding curriculum we teach our students how to create their very own games based off of Minecraft. Theyre able to learn programming in an exciting hands-on environment that does more than teach them the basic principles. It teaches them how to apply them. And unlike so many video-based programs, our coding classes for elementary, middle, and high school, are taught by live teachers so our students can get feedback on their projects in real-time.

The main thing is this: Minecraft on its own will not be able to teach a kid how to code. Rather, it is a great way to build their interest in coding and can be useful as an educational tool in a well-crafted curriculum.

Best Visual Coding Course for Young Kids

What We Dont Like

Tynker is one of the premiere providers of online coding courses for kids. They are well known for the diversity of their coding language courses, from text-based languages such as Python, Javascript, HTML/CSS, to visual block coding options for beginners and younger students.

Recognizing the usefulness and popularity of using Minecraft to teach kids coding, theyve begun offering a visual Minecraft coding course that we think can be a great coding option for younger kids.

Tynkers Minecraft coding uses a visual programming language, like Scratch, that lets kids code without having to worry about Java or C++ syntax. The idea is to prevent kids from becoming frustrated by the nitty gritty of typing commands and code and instead drag and drop literal blocks of commands and connect them together visually.

There are a variety of courses to choose from with lots of engaging projects, from making simple modifications to items to creating mythical creatures to coding multiplayer minecraft games for other kids to play.

While it may not teach written code, the visual coding environment is simple, engaging and surprisingly capable and allows younger kids to get in on Minecraft coding since it doesnt require as heavy reading and precise typing.

Is Minecraft Coding Easy For Kids To Understand

Coding languages often involve a lot of strings of words, numbers and letters, meaning that more complex coding involves a lot of typing. This can often seem daunting to children and to people who arent very confident with typing very quickly.

However, programs such as Minecraft: Education Edition offers a far more visual and less wordy way of learning to code as a beginner by using visual block coding. This involves individual blocks of pre-written code that can be dragged and dropped into the script, just like a puzzle piece.

These pre-written sections of code slot together to create fully working scripts, meaning that you dont have to worry about misspelling or mistyping the wrong code and not having your program work when you want it to.

This visual programming can then be used as a stepping stone to having you write out your own simple strings of code, which will soon become longer and longer and more complex as you grow more confident in your ability.

Additionally, Minecraft allows for coding to be implemented immediately so you can see exactly what you are doing to the game in real-time. This is far more useful than other games, which you would have to continually close and reopen repeatedly every time you made a change just to see the results.

Minecraft: Education Edition allows for the program and the game to be run simultaneously within the same program, allowing for players to hop between playing the game and coding a new modification very quickly.

Learning Programming Languages Easily With Minecraft

The programming concepts taught by Minecraft are a great resource for you to not only get interested in learning to code but also stay interested in it. There are a few languages that Minecraft uses such as Scratch, Java and you need to learn these to enhance your coding skills.

As mentioned in the earlier section, Minecraft uses block programming. Scratch is one of the popular visual programming languages. Its suitable if youre a beginner and getting started to learn to code. The visual interface of Scratch is helpful in learning to build various elements of the game.

Minecraft is built on Java a multipurpose programming language used for building interactive games and apps. You can build something as simple as a game of tic tac toe or as complex as a car racing game.

The entire game is built using Java code. The language is adept in building applications that require front-end client interaction. It means the players that are playing, ask the game to perform a particular action and the code allows the computer to understand that command.

This is the reason why Minecraft is considered to be a good educational tool besides being the most popular game across the world.
