How To Use The Map

You crafted an empty map and are ready for your next adventure. The problem is the map is blank and thats not helpful to you at all. But remember that unique Minecraft mechanic that allows you to create the map as you explore? Its time to fill in that map of yours.

To use the map, equip it from your inventory. Once you do, youll notice lines appear on that previously blank piece of yellowed paper. Your map is coming together right before your eyes.

Wander around and youll find that your map fills in the details of your surroundings. You can even see yourself on the map. Just look for the little white marker.

Once you use the map, it wont be labeled as an empty map anymore. Instead, the game assigns it a number so that you can differentiate between filled maps and empty ones.

Player Marker And Pointer

In Java Edition, every map contains a marker that marks the position of the player, and points in the same direction as the player.

In Bedrock Edition, a map can be crafted with or without this marker, and a map without a position marker can add one later by adding a compass to the map. When a map is crafted without a compass, it’s simply called an “empty map”, but when crafted with a compass, it’s called an “empty locator map”. The marker also turns red if the player enters the Nether with an Overworld map and show the player’s Overworld location relative to the Nether location. A map created in the End has a purple marker showing the player’s location. If an Overworld map is used in the End, a magenta dot appears on the player’s spawn point.

Maps are always aligned to a grid at all zoom levels. That means zooming out any different map in a specific area covered by that map always has the same center. As such, maps are aligned by map width minus 64. A level 3 map generated at spawn covers X and Z coordinates from -64 to 959. All maps generated in this area zoom out to the same coordinates, guaranteeing that they are always ‘aligned’ on a map wall. For a zoomed out map to cover a new area, it must start with a base map that is in that area.

At zoom level 0, a map created on the point has at the center of the map. At higher zoom levels of the same map, the coordinate is in the top left square of the map.

    Zooming A Map Breaks Clones

I made a map in SSP and zoomed it out three times, to make it a level 3 map. Then I made two clones of it, and they all correctly showed shared explored area. But when I then zoomed out one of them again to make it a level 4 map, all maps behaved as individual maps from then on. Both clones of the original map were also not connected to eachother anymore. Every map kept it’s own map data, and exploring new areas had only effect on the map I was holding, eventhough they were clones before. Does this mean zooming out breaks clones, or is this a bug ? Can I get around this problem, or do I have to avoid zooming out cloned maps for now? I wanted to add a note to the page, but I wasn’t sure about this. Thanks â Jack McKalling 15:34, 11 August 2014

    Part 1 Of 3: Creating A Map

  • 1Make sure that you have a crafting table and a furnace. You’ll need the crafting table to create the map and its components, while you’ll use the furnace in order to create parts for the compass that accompanies the map.
  • If you’re in creative mode, type map on search bar.
  • 2Gather resources. In order to create a map, you’ll need the following items:
  • Sugar Canes – You’ll need 9 of these. Sugar Canes are light-green stalks that usually grow near water.
  • Iron ore – You’ll need 4 of these. Iron ore resembles a grey block with orange flecks on it. Make sure to mine iron ore with at least a stone pickaxe.
  • Redstone – You’ll need one pile of Redstone. You can find Redstone starting at layer 16 and working down, so you’ll likely need to dig quite far down to find Redstone. It resembles grey rock with glowing red freckles.
  • Fuel – Anything that burns will do. You can gather 4 blocks of wood, or one block of something like charcoal or coal.
  • 3Open the furnace. Right-click , left-trigger , or tap the furnace to open it.
  • 4Smelt iron bars. Add your iron ore to the top box in the furnace interface, then add the fuel to the bottom box in the interface. The furnace will automatically begin running.
  • 5Move the iron bars into your inventory. Select the iron bars, then select an empty space in your inventory.
  • On mobile versions of Minecraft, tapping an item will move it straight into your inventory.
  • 6Open the crafting table. Select the crafting table to do so.
  • 10Move the paper into your inventory.

Locking makes your Map stay as it is. That means no matter how many changes you make in your Minecraft world, Locked Maps wont update it.

To lock a Map, put your Map into the first slot and put Glass Pane into the second slot.

    Notes:

    • You cant use a colored Glass Pane to lock a Map.
    • Locking Maps work on any type of Maps.

If you are zooming out, and take the zoomed out map out of the crafting table WITH a shift click, it will stay the same.Basically wasting 8 paper. Picking the map up with the cursor seems to be the solution.

How To Copy A Map In Minecraft

First, you’ll need to determine which version of Minecraft you have. Java maps will not load on Bedrock versions of the software and vice versa. Once you’ve verified your version, you can download maps from the websites listed below. Maps also come in one of two file formats: .zip or .mcworld.

    • .zip file: .zip files are used to share maps created in the Java edition of Minecraft. The .zip file contains the assets related to loading the map in-game. Bedrock editions of the game also formerly used .zip files. A great source for these maps is the Minecraft Maps website.
    • .mcworld file: The .mcworld extension stores all map-related assets in a single file. To install a .mcworld map, double-click it. You can find .mcworld maps on the MCPEDL fan site, along with skins, seeds, texture packs, and mods specifically for Minecraft.

Now that you’ve downloaded your new maps, it’s time to install them.

Older Minecraft maps, on the other hand, might use the traditional .zip format. To install these, you’ll have to unpack them and paste them into the minecraftWorlds folder. Here’s how:

  • Open the Files by Google app on your Android device.
  • Navigate to your Minecraft map .zip file.
  • Click on the .zip file and select Extract. You should now see a folder containing the Minecraft map.
  • Copy the Minecraft map folder.
  • Navigate to the root directory and then to games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds.
  • Paste the map folder, and you’re done!
  • Alternatively, you could also connect your Android phone to your computer via USB to move the map files from your computer to the minecraftWorlds folder.

    Orientation Of New Map

It appears that when a player creates a new drawn map, south is on top? East is to the left, West is to the right, and North is the bottom, as the character holds it. Is this correct? If this is the case, should this be noted on this page? In US, North is usually at the top of any RL map, not sure about maps in other countries.—AlfredCloutiertalk 13:31, 6 July 2015

North is up, according to the debug screen. It’s possible Console-edition maps work differently. — Orthotopetalk 15:02, 6 July 2015
Yes, you are correct. Thank you for clearing that up–my spatial sense was off. —AlfredCloutiertalk 17:11, 6 July 2015

Part 2 Of 3: Using The Map

  • 1Equip your map. Select it in the equip bar at the bottom of the screen to do so. The map will be blank when you first create it, but you can fill it by moving around the world while holding it.
  • The map will not fill itself unless you are holding it as your active item while moving through the world.
  • 2Bring up the map view. Press the right mouse button or the left trigger, or tap and hold the screen . You should see the map open.
  • On mobile, you can also tap Create Map if you see this option at the bottom of the screen.
  • It may take a few moments for the map to fill the first time you use it.
  • Your map will begin filling in the direction you are currently looking. North will always be at the top of the map.
  • 3Walk around while using the map. You’ll see the world begin to appear on your map from a top-down perspective. The first map you create is a 1:1 representation of the world, so each pixel on the map represents a single block in the world.
  • As you walk while using the map, you’ll see the edges of the map start to fill with data.
  • Your initial map will only fill when the space is taken up. Maps do not scroll to show more space, so you’ll need to expand your map to see more.
  • 4Find your player indicator. Your location will be noted by a white oval on the map.
  • If you constructed your map without a compass , there will be no indicator.XResearch source
