How To Create Railways

Minecraft Tutorial: How to Make Rail Tracks

With a rail in hand, right-click the ground to place it. If you make a mistake, just hit it with a pickaxe to pick it back up. Rails will automatically turn corners when you place a rail adjacent to another. Note, however, that you can’t turn a corner when the track is on a slope.

Placing a block of cobblestone or something similar at each end of the track will stop your cart from going off the rails. If your cart does go off the rails, just hit it with a pickaxe to put it back in your inventory.

You can place rails in a diagonal pattern to create a diagonal track. They will look like a squiggly line on the ground, but your minecart will act as if the railway is straight.

How Do You Use Rails Efficiently In Minecraft

One common, and according to many, the most efficient, distribution of powered rails is to place powered rail every 38 blocks on level ground. An easy way to place a lot of track using this count without needing to keep track of each rail is by dividing the rails into stacks of 37, as shown on the right.

How Many Powered Rails To Place

Passenger Rail

An occupied minecart will be accelerated to maximum speed by three powered rails in a row. On flat ground, the cart will be kept up to speed by placing a powered rail every 38 blocks along the route. If you don’t mind going slower and want to save on materials, powered rails can be placed further apart.

Cargo Rail

Although the Minecart With Chest looks like it should be good for building cargo trains to move stuff around, it should be noted that they only have the same momentum as an empty minecart, so you would need to place powered rails every 8 blocks. That’s a lot of gold!

Climbing Hills

To keep up top speed whilst climbing a hill, you’ll need one powered rail every two blocks ie. alternate powered and normal rails. If you don’t mind slowing down a bit, one powered rail every four blocks will do.

Add Items to make Rails In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make rails, place 6 iron ingots and 1 stick in the 3×3 crafting grid. When making rails, it is important that the iron ingots and the stick are placed in the exact pattern as the image below.

Best Practices For Laying Tracks

The performance of a rail line is affected by the way the track is placed. Turning next to a wall or having hills to climb adversely affect the speed of a cart, and so its distance traveled.

Some YouTube videos suggested that diagonal track might offer better performance than straight runs, this has not been proven to be the case. Another distance trial track was constructed with a length of 300 blocks. Carts with no rider travel the same distance as on the straight track, about 18 blocks before they stop, and a cart with a player riding can make it to the end of the track. The interaction with blocks next to the track seems to be a little stronger with carts on a diagonal track. With lampposts placed only every 10 blocks along the track an unmanned cart could cover only 12 blocks, and with a player riding just over 180 blocks, a significant reduction.

What the tests have confirmed is the increase in speed. On each curved track, a cart effectively moves 2 blocks, thus its maximum speed is 11.314 m/s, an improvement over the maximum of 8 m/s on a straight track.

If construction cost is no object one can of course use powered rails all the way to the top to get the best possible performance.

Carts with a rider, or chest carts, have more momentum and so climb higher than one that is unloaded. With a rider, a cart can climb at least 24 blocks before needed powered rails to go higher.

How To Use Rails And Minecarts

Rains and Minecarts are very handy for use while mining in Minecraft, but they can also be used as transportation. To make them useful you are going to need to learn more about powered tracks. I talk about them in my Instructable How to Mine in Minecraft, but I will cover them more here as well.

When using rails, you can use normal rails by themselves but you have to direct them like when you walk and they won’t go very fast unless you are going downhill

Common Trails of Redstone Rails

  • Power with a Redstone Block, RedstoneTorch, Redstone in combination with a Lever or Button or Restone Torch, or just a Lever or Button using a lever will turn the rail on and off, a button will turn it on temporarily and a Redstone Torch will leave it on
  • Rails connected together will power one another if they are the same i.e. a powered Powered Rail will activate any other Powered Rails it touches but will not power an Activator or Detector Rail
  • Powered Rails and Activator Rails will show up red when placed next to a Redstone power source a Detector Rail will show up red once activated by a Minecart and so will the rail it activates

Types Of Minecarts In Minecraft

Here are the 4 types of mine carts in minecraft:

1. Plain Minecart

The best thing about Plain minecarts is that, it can be rode by you, your animals, and enemy mobs.

Well, you can control the minecart easily by using the keys you use to go forward and backward. You can make Minecraft gameplay superfast.

You can go up sloped rails using the plain rails, but the progress will be slow.

Plain rails with player on top will travel at maximum speed for 38 blocks on flat ground whereas an empty plain minecart will only travel eight blocks. Place one powered rail every 38 blocks to maintain top speed.

2. Minecart with chest

You can use this cart by Right-clicking the minecart with a chest loaded up with tools, resources etc. for transportation.

Well, this cart is super useful when you are trying to dig deep in the ground and want to keep your inventory empty.

3. Minecart with hopper

Minecarts with hopper is another cool cart you can use in Minecraft. This kind of carts are quite useful for large mining operations.

The hoppers will pick up any blocks or items lying on the railway track. Keep in mind that, Hoppers can be switched on or off by passing over an activator rail attached with a redstone.

4. Minecart with TNT

Minecarts with TNT attached are basically used for faster mining operations.

An exploding minecart with TNT will never destroy any type of rails. Now that you have the basic knowledge about Rails and minecarts, it is time to craft the rail tracks.

How Do You Make Powered Rails Faster

Powered rails will only speed you up as you are on top of them. If you have many rails placed in a row the top speed you can reach is eight blocks a second. It seems the only way to make powered rails faster is to place more of them. There used to be ways to create minecart boosters, but it has since been patched.

How To Use Detector Rails

Detector rails are used to momentarily power redstone as the minecart passes over place them like any other rail. They can be used to open doors, power pistons, or with any other complex redstone contraptions you create. In the image above, the cart is about to power the piston connected to the detector rail with redstone dust.

How To Make Minecarts Faster

If youd like to create an automated railway system for mining then, you have to use powered rails.

Keep in mind that, powered rails needs a redstone item to generate as the minecart passes over, like a lever or a redstone torch.

Place a redstone torch beneath the block.

Any types of minecart for climbing a slope requires three powered rails to reach top speed.

Facts About Minecraft Railways

[Detail] Train Tracks : Minecraft
  • Minecraft players may only place different rails on a block only. However, floating rails can be found in an abandoned mine shaft.
  • In a T-intersection of railway you designed, the middle rail will always connect the South-East coordinate.
  • A dropped item on a rail will stop a minecart from moving forward or backward.
  • An iron pickaxe can be seen in the curved rail only, so dont forget to pick it up.

    How To Use Powered Rails

If you’d like to create an automated railway system essential for mining operations when you can’t be there to drive a minecart you have to use powered rails. Keep in mind that powered rails must be powered with a redstone item, like a lever or redstone torch.

A tip for powering sloped rails is to place a redstone torch beneath the block supporting the rail, as is shown in the picture above.

If you’d like a minecart to stop when it reaches the end of a powered track, you’ll want to place a dip at each end, as is shown above.

Different types if minecarts act differently on powered rails:

    • A plain minecart with you in it will travel at maximum speed for 38 blocks on flat ground after passing over three powered rails in a row. To maintain top speed, place one powered rail every 38 blocks. An empty plain minecart will only travel eight blocks at top speed after passing over three powered rails. If you’d like to save resources, you can space out your powered rails, but your minecarts will lose speed.

    • Any minecart climbing a slope requires three powered rails in a row to reach top speed, and a powered rail every two blocks to maintain maximum speed.

    • A minecart with a chest or hopper in it requires three powered rails in a row to reach top speed, and a powered rail every eight blocks to maintain maximum speed.

Riding A Minecart Through A Nether Portal

WHAT: I’d like to be able to have minecarts with entities in them such as the player, villagers, or sheep be able to go through a nether portal and preserve their direction and momentum on the other side.

WHY: We could have a rail network that travel between dimensions without having to get in and out of a minecart, or breaking a replacing the minecart in the case of mobs being transported. This way we could get to bases we have have in the nether without changing rail lines between dimensions. It would make it much easier to transport mobs large distances. For instance, we could bring mushrooms back to our base through the nether. When the player, mobs, projectiles, dropped items, or empty minecarts pass through the portal, they all go through to the other side, preserving their direction and momentum. Intuitively most players would assume that a minecart with an entity in it should follow the same logic. It can be frustrating for new players to figure out why their minecart won’t go through.

HOW: The code already exists in the game for entities passing through the portal to preserve their momentum and direction. The code for a minecart without a rider passing through the portal without a rider exists in the game as well. If the code for a minecart was modified to check to see if it had a rider and if so, both the minecart and rider were teleported to the other dimension, it could solve this problem.

The above video is a slight variation that of the first design, that uses lava instead along with pistons is available and does not rely on any glitches, thus is considered to be safe for use in the latest versions of Minecraft . When the player arrives in a minecart, the minecart gets broken by the lava and collected by the hoppers while the player is pushed out of the exit using a glass block connected to a sticky piston. While slightly more redstone intensive than Sethbling’s design , it does not have any problems associated with it and is thus recommended for anyone playing in 1.6+. If you are playing in Java Edition 1.5.2 or below , Sethbling’s design is definitely better.

How Many Types Of Rails Are There In Minecraft

There are four types of rails you will be using. Different rails perform different functions. You need to use four of these rails to create a complete railway system. Most often, the plain rails are found as loots and can be placed on flat grounds.

Here are the four Basic types of Rail in Minecraft:

    1. Plain rail: Plain rails are solid blocks and are the most common rails youll be using in Minecraft. Well, Plain rails can be placed on flat grounds or on slopes.

    2. Powered rail: Powered rail is one of the interesting rails because you need a redstone for placing this rail. Your minecart will move along the rail if a redstone is attached to it. If not then, it will stop your cart within one blocks distance. A powered rail stands one block upward to its adjacent rails. You can use this rail for much faster transport.

Go through the Minecraft Biomes post to see where you can put the powered rails. If you are unable to find the biomes, use the Biome Finder app in Minecraft.

    3. Detector rail: In Minecraft, Detector rails are generally used in redstone gadgets. When you move a minecart over a detector rail, it will activate redstone signals.

    4. Activator rail: These rails acts like simple rails when they are not connected to any redstone. Activators are quite useful when they are connected to a redstone.

If a minecart along with a player passes over this rail, it will knock the player off. It would be lit if a minecart filled with TNT is passed over the activator rail.

How To Make Powered Rails In Minecraft

To change the velocity of a minecart, powered rails are used. When powered with Redstone, they increase the speed while acting as a brake when turned off. If one end of the rail is blocked, turning on a powered rail lets a stopped minecart begin moving in the nonblocked direction. Effectively, players can then load and unload carts.

How To Make Powered Rail In Minecraft

There are several different types of rails in Minecraft, but the electric rail is the most important one. These types of tracks in Minecraft are the key to any complex track system because they can affect the speed of the minecart. Once placed and activated, they will open up a world full of possibilities. The power rail looks similar to the ordinary railroad tracks in the game, except that there are two yellow lines extending along the metal rails, and the red lines intersect inside.

All of these require considerable material input, which is a great waste of the players gold resources. The Minecraft recipe requires six gold ingots, one stick and one redstone dust. This combination creates six independent maneuvering track sections for players to locate and activate.

First, gold bars come from the smelting of gold ore collected with iron pickaxes or from a combination of gold nuggets. Gold ore is most commonly found at levels 0 to 32 in the main world of Minecraft, while gold ingots are generated in various boxes in the nether and main world dimensions. The other two materials, redstone dust and sticks, drop from the redstone ore mined with a combination of iron pickaxe, crafting table, and planks, respectively.
