As a prerequisite, you should make sure you have Java installed and up to date on the computer that will host the server so it can run .jar files.
Get The Latest Version Of Java
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server is making sure you have the latest version of Java installed. Minecraft requires Java to run the game and having the latest version will help us run our server without issues.
You can install the latest version of Java here. Once there, click the red Java Download button as you can see below:
Then, read and accept the terms by clicking the red Agree and Start Free Download button.
The Java setup run file should now be in the download folder of your computer. If you need help with finding the download folder, type in downloads into your computer search bar and open the Downloads folder.
Once in the downloads folder find the JavaSetup executable file and run this application. A popup window may appear asking if the application can make changes to your computer. Click to allow access, you may be asked to provide a password for these permissions.
Once the application loads click to install Java.
You may be asked to uninstall a previous Java version, do so as keeping an older version does not help with our server setup.
Once any previous versions are removed continue through the window prompts until Java is downloaded and up to date.
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server should now be complete. The following step we must take is downloading and setting up the actual Minecraft server folder.

Preparing To Install The Server
Setting Up A Simple Modded Minecraft Server
Just like you can easily inject Forge mod loader into a standalone Minecraft installation you can easily inject Forge mod loader into the Minecraft server.
You can reuse the same installer you used for Forge in the previous modding tutorial simply rerun it and adjust the settings as such:
Select Install server and point it at a fresh directory. You dont need to install a server and then install Forge, like you need to install Minecraft and then install Forge like we did in the client-side tutorial.
Note: If you jumped down to this section because you were so excited about mods on your server, well still encourage you to read the previous section as several of the steps are identical, and were not repeating them all in detail for this portion of the tutorial.
Give it a minute to download both the server and Forge files, then visit the installation folder. The next steps will look a whole lot like the vanilla Minecraft server setup.
Within the folder, run the forge.*.universal.jar file using the exact same command you used, based on your operating system from the vanilla installation portion of this tutorial.
The server will run and then halt, indicating as it did in the previous section that you need to accept the EULA. Open up the freshly created EULA.txt and edit the false to true just like last time.

Install Forge Server Accept Eula
In order to start hosting a server, you need these files. Reopen the Forge installer and select Install Server, and the location you want it to be installed.Now that its been installed, double click on forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2838-universal.jar to launch it. once you do that, the folders logs, mods, and eula.txt will appear in the folder.
Double click on the eula.txt to open it, and change the false to true. ctrl+s or click File then Save, then close the txt. Once that’s done, relaunch the .jar. You’ll see a bunch more files appear in the Server folder, and a window open up titled Minecraft server. Congrats! You now have a local modded Minecraft server! But we’re not here for that, we’re trying to create a server that anyone can connect to. Close the Minecraft server window.
Connecting To Your Server
Connect to your serverâs console or connect remotely via secure shell . If you are connecting remotely via SSH, use the following command to log in as the root user.
If this is your first time connecting to this server, you will be prompted to confirm you want to connect to a new, previously unknown host. Type yes,and you will be prompted for the root password. Once you enter it, you are logged in as root.
It is recommended to create a separate user account so that if your Minecraft server is compromised, the exploiter does not have access to the root user account. Use the following command to create a user named mcuser.
adduser mcuser
The following command is to set the password for our new user.
passwd mcuser
You will be prompted to enter and confirm the password.

Preparing To Create Your Server
Port Forward To Play Globally
Port forwarding is what is required to let your friends connect to your server if they are not on the same local connection. If you want to play on a server locally on the same connection this step is not required. It is important to note that port forwarding might cause security risks so make sure you follow the port forwarding steps carefully.
Every router is different when it comes to setting up port forwarding. A router is what is used to create a wireless internet connection. You need to follow the steps to reach your routers admin page as we will be port forwarding a specific port address that Minecraft will use. Go to the following link below and click on the list of all routers and find your router. Skip all ads and do not download any software on this website. Additional software is not needed for this.
When you are on your specific router page follow the steps on setting up a port forward entry. This will differ from router to router but the general steps in common with most routers will be the following.Create a static IP address

Just like plugins, mods are extremely popular amongst server owners. However, mods are a bit more complex than plugins as they can be client-side only, server-side only, or both, depending on the mod.
Client-side only means that the mod is to be installed on each players Minecraft client, as opposed to the Minecraft server. Some popular client-side only mods include Optifine, Shaders, and Damage Indicators. When client-side only mods are installed onto a server, this can actually cause the server to crash, not start at all, or not run as it should.
Server-side only means that the mod is intended for use on the Minecraft server only and should not be installed on the players Minecraft client. One of the most popular server-side mods out there, as an example, is Biomes O Plenty.
The rest of the modding world is full of mods that are required both server and client-side. If the mod is on the server, but not the client, you wont be able to connect to the server in question. Likewise, if the mod exists on the client but not the server, you might get mod rejections. The same error can appear if one or the other has the wrong mod version installed.
