Fine Tuning With Serverproperties

How to Install and Setup a Modded Minecraft Server with Forge in 2021 for 1.12 – 1.16 and 1.17!

Inside the server folder youll find a file named server.properties. If you open this file in a text editor youll find a simple configuration file that can be manually edited. While some of these settings are available via server/in-game commands, many of them are not.

Using simple true/false or numerical toggles its possible to allow players to fly during survival mode, turn off The Nether, adjust server timeout settings, and a host of other variables. While many of the settings are fairly self-explanatory, a few require a more in-depth understanding of the variable involved. Check out this detailed breakdown of the server.properties variables.

Armed with a server, modded or otherwise, you now no longer have to worry about making sure the right person is online at the right time in order to access your world .

The Basics Of Setting Up A Forge Modded Minecraft Server

Before we begin: It is notable that if you are playing a popular, publicly distributed pack, such as an FTB pack, RLcraft, or Skyfactory 4, often the authors of such packs have pre-assembled a server pack for their work, allowing you to sometimes skip ahead as far as step 7 in this process. Definitely check the site you got the pack from for such a thing, as it can save you a lot of bother. However, if you really do have to start from the beginning, it’s a couple step process:

  • Download the forge installer jar file for the minecraft version you want to run a server for. As of this writing, the official forge site is: .
  • Create an empty folder someplace convenient where you will be running the server from, and install forge’s server into that empty folder. You will need java installed to do this, which can be acquired from here: . You might get an error message saying that forge failed to download the necessary libraries, if this occurs, do not start over, just run the installer again, targetting the same folder.

  • Copy your mods and config folder from the client over to the server folder. scripts if you used crafttweaker to do recipes, local if that’s where you configured FTBU, so on, so forth, any folder that has files you edited to make the pack go, copy over.

  • Launch the forge server with a .bat file with JVM arguments to allocate ram.

  • java -Xmx4096M -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854-universal.jar noguipause

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, doing this requires changing your home network’s configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. If you wish to purchase a small private server for friends, check out Minecraft Realms. If you still wish to set up your own private server, do so at your own risk as we cannot offer support for home networks or privately made servers.

Here is a guide to help you create a server so your friends can join and play together!

As a prerequisite, you should make sure you have Java installed and up to date on the computer that will host the server so it can run .jar files.

  • Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file
  • After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it Minecraft Server.
  • Drag over or copy and paste the .jar file into the Minecraft Server folder.
  • While you have the file browser open, open command prompt from the start menu.
  • You can check if Java is installed in command prompt by typing without quotes java -version.
  • To start the server, you will need to change the directory to the location where you have the Minecraft Server folder and the .jar file located in it.
  • You can find the directory in Windows by simply clicking on the browser directory in file browser here. Copy this address to your clipboard.
  • This should look like cd C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Minecraft Server
  • Get The Latest Version Of Java

EASY! Setting Up a MODDED MINECRAFT Server | QUICK and SIMPLE!

The first step in setting up a Minecraft server is making sure you have the latest version of Java installed. Minecraft requires Java to run the game and having the latest version will help us run our server without issues.

You can install the latest version of Java here. Once there, click the red Java Download button as you can see below:

Then, read and accept the terms by clicking the red Agree and Start Free Download button.

The Java setup run file should now be in the download folder of your computer. If you need help with finding the download folder, type in downloads into your computer search bar and open the Downloads folder.

Once in the downloads folder find the JavaSetup executable file and run this application. A popup window may appear asking if the application can make changes to your computer. Click to allow access, you may be asked to provide a password for these permissions.

Once the application loads click to install Java.

You may be asked to uninstall a previous Java version, do so as keeping an older version does not help with our server setup.

Once any previous versions are removed continue through the window prompts until Java is downloaded and up to date.

The first step in setting up a Minecraft server should now be complete. The following step we must take is downloading and setting up the actual Minecraft server folder.

    Preparing To Install The Server

  • 1Assign a static IP address to your computer. This will ensure that the port you forward later will remain attached to your computer. To assign a static IP address, access your router’s page, then do the following:
  • Find your router’s list of connected items.
  • This will vary from router to router. If you can’t find a way to assign a static IP address, consult your router’s documentation for specific instructions.
  • Select your computer.
  • Change your computer’s number if necessary.
  • Click Save or Apply.
  • Wait for your router to finish rebooting if necessary.
  • 2Forward the Minecraft port for your router. Once your computer has a specific IP address assigned to it, you can proceed with forwarding the Minecraft port :
  • Find the “Port Forwarding” section and create a new rule if necessary.
  • Enter “Minecraft” as the description or title.
  • Enter your computer’s static IP address in the “IP” or “Address” section of the rule.
  • Select TCP & UDP from the “TCP” or “UDP” menu.
  • Enter in both port text boxes.
  • Ensure that the rule is enabled by checking its box or clicking the On button.
  • Save and apply your settings by clicking Save or Apply.
  • 3Create a new folder called “Minecraft Server” on your computer. This process will vary slightly depending on your computer’s operating system:
  • Windows Right-click the desktop, select New, click Folder, type in Minecraft Server
  • Mac Click the desktop, click File, click New Folder in the drop-down menu, type in Minecraft Server Return.
  • Setting Up A Simple Modded Minecraft Server

Just like you can easily inject Forge mod loader into a standalone Minecraft installation you can easily inject Forge mod loader into the Minecraft server.

You can reuse the same installer you used for Forge in the previous modding tutorial simply rerun it and adjust the settings as such:

Select Install server and point it at a fresh directory. You dont need to install a server and then install Forge, like you need to install Minecraft and then install Forge like we did in the client-side tutorial.

Note: If you jumped down to this section because you were so excited about mods on your server, well still encourage you to read the previous section as several of the steps are identical, and were not repeating them all in detail for this portion of the tutorial.

Give it a minute to download both the server and Forge files, then visit the installation folder. The next steps will look a whole lot like the vanilla Minecraft server setup.

Within the folder, run the forge.*.universal.jar file using the exact same command you used, based on your operating system from the vanilla installation portion of this tutorial.

The server will run and then halt, indicating as it did in the previous section that you need to accept the EULA. Open up the freshly created EULA.txt and edit the false to true just like last time.

Everything looks good. We even spawned near a village, which is always fun. Lets show these villagers how to party by spawning a portal to a magical dimension.

In order to start hosting a server, you need these files. Reopen the Forge installer and select Install Server, and the location you want it to be installed. Now that its been installed, double click on forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2838-universal.jar to launch it. once you do that, the folders logs, mods, and eula.txt will appear in the folder.

Double click on the eula.txt to open it, and change the false to true. ctrl+s or click File then Save, then close the txt. Once that’s done, relaunch the .jar. You’ll see a bunch more files appear in the Server folder, and a window open up titled Minecraft server. Congrats! You now have a local modded Minecraft server! But we’re not here for that, we’re trying to create a server that anyone can connect to. Close the Minecraft server window.

    Connecting To Your Server

Setting Up My Modded Minecraft Server

Connect to your serverâs console or connect remotely via secure shell . If you are connecting remotely via SSH, use the following command to log in as the root user.

If this is your first time connecting to this server, you will be prompted to confirm you want to connect to a new, previously unknown host. Type yes,and you will be prompted for the root password. Once you enter it, you are logged in as root.

It is recommended to create a separate user account so that if your Minecraft server is compromised, the exploiter does not have access to the root user account. Use the following command to create a user named mcuser.

    adduser mcuser

The following command is to set the password for our new user.

    passwd mcuser

You will be prompted to enter and confirm the password.

  • Port Forward To Play Globally

Port forwarding is what is required to let your friends connect to your server if they are not on the same local connection. If you want to play on a server locally on the same connection this step is not required. It is important to note that port forwarding might cause security risks so make sure you follow the port forwarding steps carefully.

Every router is different when it comes to setting up port forwarding. A router is what is used to create a wireless internet connection. You need to follow the steps to reach your routers admin page as we will be port forwarding a specific port address that Minecraft will use. Go to the following link below and click on the list of all routers and find your router. Skip all ads and do not download any software on this website. Additional software is not needed for this.

When you are on your specific router page follow the steps on setting up a port forward entry. This will differ from router to router but the general steps in common with most routers will be the following.Create a static IP address

Login to your router and navigate the port forwarding section

    Create a port forward entry

This website explains each step for your specific router in depth. When you get to the step of creating a port forward entry make sure you name it something that is recognizable such as Minecraft and the port number should be 25565. The port forward website also has a very helpful explanation about port forwarding for Minecraft here.

How Do I Install Forge Mods Or A Modpack On My Java Server

Just like plugins, mods are extremely popular amongst server owners. However, mods are a bit more complex than plugins as they can be client-side only, server-side only, or both, depending on the mod.

  • Client-side only means that the mod is to be installed on each players Minecraft client, as opposed to the Minecraft server. Some popular client-side only mods include Optifine, Shaders, and Damage Indicators. When client-side only mods are installed onto a server, this can actually cause the server to crash, not start at all, or not run as it should.

  • Server-side only means that the mod is intended for use on the Minecraft server only and should not be installed on the players Minecraft client. One of the most popular server-side mods out there, as an example, is Biomes O Plenty.

  • The rest of the modding world is full of mods that are required both server and client-side. If the mod is on the server, but not the client, you wont be able to connect to the server in question. Likewise, if the mod exists on the client but not the server, you might get mod rejections. The same error can appear if one or the other has the wrong mod version installed. This happens most often with modpacks.
