Microsoft And Codeorg Team Up To Bring Minecraft To Hour Of Code

Minecraft – Hour of Code: Intro

To the community of 100 million players around the world, Minecraft represents many things creativity, strategy, collaboration and survival, just to name a few. What many may not realize is that Minecraft has the power to transform learning on a global scale. By creating a virtual world and then advancing in it, students learn digital citizenship, empathy, social skills and even improve their literacy while getting real time feedback on their problem solving skills from the teacher. In fact, more than 7,000 teachers around the world are already using Minecraft in the classroom.

Building on this natural use of Minecraft in the classroom, we are excited to share today that together with Code.org, we are bringing a Minecraft-inspired coding tutorial to students and educators, created especially for Hour of Code, an annual, global campaign held during Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 7-13. Hour of Code features a variety of one-hour introductory learn-to-code experiences, with the goal of demystifying code and encouraging more students to learn the basics of computer science.

Created by Minecraft game designers, the tutorial includes characters and challenges inspired by the Minecraft game developed by Mojang and familiar to Minecraft players around the world.

Check it out today at , and learn more about Minecrafts use in education at .

What Does Codeorg Do

To achieve that goal, today Code.org creates cool computer science courses, sometimes partnering with other companies to make them. They train teachers to be able to bring those lessons into the classes room. Then, they partner with large school districts to help get every child access. Also, Code.org helps change government policies through their Code.org Advocacy Coalition. And they do marketing to help break the stereotypes around coding, and who can be a good coder, today.

One of the most fun campaigns Code.org originally ideated and runs every year is the annual Hour of Code campaign. The basic concept behind the program is that with just one-hour any kid anywhere can get started with coding and be proud of what they made. So far the innovative program has engaged more than 15% of all the students in the world!

Minecraft Has Inspired Students 85 Million Times On Codeorg

Its about time! Maine elementary school teacher and Code.org facilitator Mike Harvey laughs, recalling his reaction when Code.org partnered with Microsoft to launch the first Minecraft activity for the Hour of Code in 2015. An early adopter of Minecraft in the classroom, Mike thinks that it was a natural and logical outcome of what he called the symbiotic relationship between Code.org and Microsoft.

Code.org has had the opportunity to collaborate with the Microsoft team in building not one, not two, but three different Minecraft adventures for the Hour of Code. Taking a look at our most popular Hour of Code activities, we were thrilled to find that students around the world have participated more than 85 million times and introduced to some of the basic concepts of coding and computer science through one of these Minecraft activities.

And its no wonder. Minecraft has captured the imagination of people for almost a decade. A vast virtual world open to whatever a player can dream up, it has just enough structure in its uniform blocks and limited types to make it an ideal teaching and learning environment. In addition to computer science, students are using Minecraft in the classroom to learn just about anything, from algebra, to history, to chemistry.

On behalf of all the young coders, we thank Microsoft for their continued support.

How Did Codeorg Get Started

Code.org got started back in January of 2013 when twin brothers Hadi and Ali Partovi teamed up based on an idea Hadi had. The thought came to Hadi, while he was thinking about his own potential legacy in the wake of Steve Job’s passing in 2011. The goal was to make computer science more accessible for all kids. Initially, the brothers focused on creating a database of all the computer science classrooms in the United States. After publishing their website, they shared a video featuring Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey, and other programmers and entrepreneurs promoting computer science, that was really popular. From there, a lot of interested schools reached out to the Founder for help and the rest is history!
