Minecraft Revenue Over Time

Minecraft, But You Can Copy And Paste Any Block…

As mentioned earlier, Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, having sold over 200 million copies worldwide as of 2020. Its yearly revenue has been huge since 2012, but even now, its still bringing in the big bucks.

The game earned Mojang, the developer and owner of Minecraft at the time, nearly $240 million. This profitability was credited to the success of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition on Xbox Live Arcade and Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

Over 5 million copies of the game were sold on Xbox Live Arcade alone in the same year.

Profits for Mojang almost doubled in 2013 from the previous year thanks to Minecraft bringing in $322.4 million of revenue. At around the same time, the Xbox 360 edition had sold over 11 million copies, the PC version shifted over 14 million copies, and the PlayStation 3 version had sold more than 1 million copies.

2014 saw Minecraft change ownership to Microsoft in a $2.5 billion deal. Revenue in the same year was $165 million but increased to $350 million in the following year.

Minecraft earned the most amount of revenue in 2018, amassing $500 million in total $110 million from the mobile version of the game alone.

While Minecraft hasnt seen this level of profitability since then, its still earning a hefty sum each year. Microsoft reported their results for their fiscal Q3 in April 2021, with their personal computing division revenue being £13 billion up 13% for the first three months ending March 31st.

Minecraft Has Sold Over 200 Million Copies Over 126 Million Monthly Players

Minecraft continues to grow, as Mojang Studios celebrates the ways its game has brought people together.

Following a rebranding to Mojang Studios, the Microsoft-owned developer is celebrating over 200 million sales of Minecraft, with over 126 million players logging in monthly.

The milestone was celebrated during a difficult period for Mojang Studios due to the ongoing challenges present by COVID-19. Helen Chiang, Studio Head at Mojang Studios, explains in a Minecraft update that as soon as the pandemic started affecting its players, the studio switched to thinking about how to better support its players.

Minecraft Has Surpassed 176 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

Based on what we now know, this likely makes Minecraft the best-selling game ever.

By Logan Moore

To mark the 10-year anniversary of;Minecraft today, Microsoft and Mojang announced the latest sales numbers for the game and yeah, theyre about as staggering as youd expect.

Over the course of the past 10 years,;Minecraft has now sold over 176 million copies worldwide. Considering the game has been on literally every platform imaginable including mobile devices, last-generation hardware, and even the beloved PlayStation Vita, this isnt all that surprising spread out over a decade-long span of time. From what were aware of, the PC version alone has sold over 30 million of this total. This is a feat that no other games have ever really reached, from what were aware of.

Based on this new information,;Minecraft is technically the best-selling game of all-time based on numbers that we have available. The games biggest competition for this title would be that of;Tetris, but its uncertain just how many copies of;Tetris have been sold over the years from a single entry. While collectively across all entries we know that;Tetris has certainly sold more, its hard to know if just one installment in the puzzle series has sold more lifetime than that of;Minecraft. Unless those totals eventually are released,;Minecraft is the de facto champ.

So How Is Minecraft Right Now

Looking at the numbers, it’s safe to say that Minecraft is doing pretty well for itself. Last year in May, Mojang announced that Minecraft had sold over 200 million copies, and then made a second announcement saying that the sandbox had surpassed 131 million monthly active users. It’s by no means not a surprise, but it’s certainly impressive.

Mojang announced that Minecraft sales exceeded over 200 million, and then made a second announcement saying that the sandbox had surpassed 131 million monthly active users.

These successes were announced right in the middle of 2020, which turned out to be a pretty great year for Minecraft players. The block-building sandbox kicked off 2020 with the game’s biggest update to date: The Nether. The update gave Minecraft’s foreboding underbelly a hellish overhaul, adding four new biomes, lots of new creepy mobs, and more resource blocks, including a new ore even stronger than diamond. The update was received well, as players rose to the challenge of surviving the Nether and creative builders got to work constructing haunted mansions and ghoulish castles with the spooky new blocks.

With regular patches and Mojang hitting its stride with major updates, Minecraft is in pretty great shape as we continue into 2021.

Minecraft Has Officially Sold 200 Million Copies

Game News: Minecraft sells over 15 million copies in 2012 ...

For a while now, it was well known that Minecraft was one of the best selling games of all time. The open sandbox creation game surpassed 100 million copies sold back in 2016. Despite releasing all the way back in 2009, the game continues to sell incredibly well each month. Following the celebration of Mojang Studios 11th anniversary, Microsoft has now confirmed that the game has surpassed 200 million copies sold a milestone for the entire industry.

As reported by The Verge, Minecraft has now officially sold over 200 million copies. These figures come from Mojang Studios owner Microsoft, who bought the Swedish studio back in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

Even more surprising perhaps is the fact that the game continues to be played by a massive number of fans. Despite releasing back in 2009, most owners of Minecraft are still playing it to this day, with the game seeing a reported 126 million players each month.

200 million copies makes Minecraft by far the best selling paid video game of all time at least based on available data. Though a game such as Tetris has commonly been said to be the best selling game of all time, detailed figures are not available for the classic puzzler. Based on available data, Minecraft is far and away the best selling game of all time, with Grand Theft Auto V being a not-so-close second with 120 million copies sold.

Minecraft Is Still Number One In Physical Sales

10 whole years on from the games official launch, Minecraft for Switch has taken control of physical sales this week. Its had a 29% week-by-week sales increase and has clambered above 8 Deluxe, which only had a 16% increase.

This isnt just sales for the Nintendo Switch, either – this is overall game sales. As the market is pouring next-gen titles out the wazoo, its still Minecraft that takes the reins and guides the entire gaming industry. Not bad for a game that was once as indie as indies come.

It has now dominated Grand Theft Auto 5, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and even FIFA 21 for the top spot.

The Future Of Minecraft

Minecrafts future certainly doesnt look bleak when you take its ever-growing player base, popularity on Twitch, and overall profitability into consideration. If it continues down this path, it could very well last for another decade.

Even if initial players of Minecraft have grown up or moved onto other games, Minecraft still manages to bring in a new wave of players, as well as hold onto dedicated veteran players, such as popular Minecraft YouTuber, EthosLab, who has been regularly uploading content on the game for over 10 years.

Mods have always been popular in Minecraft and stop it from going stale, allowing more creativity and freedom in a game that already embodies both of those two things. As mentioned earlier, players have downloaded mods over 1 billion times, so the game still has a booming community.

These add-ons range from quality-of-life changes to the game like a revamped interface to downright bizarre, such as a No Cubes mod which, as you might have guessed, makes blocks and horizons round instead of cubic.

There are a huge number of mods available for Minecraft that refresh the experience. In fact, on CurseForge alone, there are over 80,000 mods, a number that continues to grow.

Alongside community-made content to keep the game fresh, Minecraft also receives official patches and updates on a regular basis, including the heavily-anticipated Caves and Cliffs update.

How Many Copies Has Minecraft Sold

Will Microsoft improve Minecraft?

Overall, as were sure you can guess, Minecraft has sold a nearly unfathomable sum of copies. It was reported by Statisa that by 2020, Minecraft had sold a grand total of 200 million copies.

The Pocket Edition of the game has also accumulated 93 million sales since it launched in 2012, and Minecraft Chinese Edition, a free version of the game, has amassed 400 million downloads since 2017. That makes for over 693 million copies of the active game in circulation. Phew.

The game was of course known as a widespread success, but perhaps not recognised to the tune of almost 700 million players. It looks like Minecraft has a bit of a chokehold on the gaming industry – and they dont seem to be loosening up any time soon.

The AR game which blends state-of-the-art Microsoft technology like Azure Spatial Anchors tracking and PlayFab integration to bring the game to life will include many of the features from the Vanilla Minecraft, as well as new ones Microsoft has chosen not to reveal just yet.
