Changing Game Modes With The Lan Trick
This technique might be old hat to some Minecraft players but its worth noting as a very hasty and simple technique you can use without any advanced editing or secondary programs required at all.
Here we are in a test survival world we created for this tutorial. You can see the hearts and hunger meter above the experience and item bar.
The world was flagged as survival when we made it and it will stay survival. However we can temporarily skirt those rules by opening the game to the LAN for network play .
Hit ESC to pull up the game menu and click Open to LAN.
In the LAN World menu the only important option for our purposes is to toggle Allow Cheats to On. Like the header implies, these are the settings for other players, and if you change the game mode here it only changes the game mode for incoming players to your LAN world. If you toggled the cheats on, however, it applies to all players in the game . Click Start LAN World when you have toggled the cheats on.
Back in the game, press the t key to bring up the ingame console box. Enter the command /gamemode c to change your game mode to creative.
Notice the hearts, hunger, and experience meter are gone leaving on the item bar. Despite the worlds survival mode flag were now in creative mode.

What About Minecraft Multiplayer Mode
Depending on your device, Minecraft can be played in multiplayer mode using game-to-game multiplayer, local split screen, LAN play, and servers. Most of the game modes above can be accessed in multiplayer.
This means that you can create a world in Minecraft then invite other players to join you in it. The benefit of this is that any device can be used to host a multiplayer Minecraft session.
While a dedicated server is certainly an advantage , a multiplayer game can be hosted on anything from an Android phone to a desktop PC, and beyond.
Almost any device can be set up as a Minecraft server. It might be a PC, or even something as affordable as a Raspberry Pi .
For a simple Minecraft multiplayer game on your local network, create a world and set it as Visible to LAN Players. Other players can then connect to the game and you can play alongside them.

Why Change Game Modes In Minecraft
The ability to change game modes might not seem useful at first, especially if youre someone that likes to aim for achievements. On the other hand, maybe you want to create a custom game type like a Capture the Flag game.
You could use Creative Mode to build the respective bases for your friends, and then switch the mode to Survival so that players can take part in the game. After a few test plays, you can swap back to Creative to make modifications if the game doesnt fit your vision.
The four different game modes can change your overall experience with Minecraft just as surely as a modpack might. Take the time to experiment with each and find your favorite game mode, but keep in mind that Hardcore is probably not the best starting point for a first-time player.

Game Mode For A Minecraft World
The directions here are for the UWP or Bedrock version of Minecraft but the same process will work on the Java version.
Open Minecraft and click the edit button next to a world. If you already have a world open, you can tap Escape and click the Settings button.
On the settings screen, open the Default Game Mode dropdown and select one of the modes. There is Survival where you have to manage hunger, you get attacked by mobs, you can drown, and you sustain fall damage. The resources that you need have to be mined. There is Creative which gives you unlimited resources, you dont have to worry about hunger or fall damage, and all mobs are passive. The third is Adventure and the biggest difference between this mode and Creative mode is that you cannot break blocks unless you have a tool thats allowed to break it. These tools are set up with commands.
All three modes can be set for a local game, or a server game but Adventure mode is more suited for special maps and structures. It allows map-makers or world-makers to keep players from destroying particular structures that are important in the world.
For all these modes, you can also change the difficulty level. The difficulty level matters in Survival and Adventure mode.
There are other differences between these modes. If you have a Minecraft world that youve been playing in for a long time, you might want to back it up before you change its mode.

This is a less-used option for Minecraft, mainly for creating worlds for others to play in. There is a limit on changing the map and blocks cannot be destroyed by hand.
Instead, they’re mined only using a suitable item with the pre-determined CanDestroy tag. Similarly, building is only possible if a block has the CanPlaceOn tag. Otherwise, Adventure mode is like Survival.

Ever wanted to survive in a map you built in Creative? Or wanted to “cheat” in your Survival world to upgrade your house? Whatever the reason, this wikiHow will teach you how to change game modes in the Console Edition and Java Edition of Minecraft.
Minecraft: Using Commands To Change Game Modes
Using Minecraft’s console commands, players can change game modes on the fly and for multiple different targets if they wish. The syntax for the required game mode command is slightly different depending on the platform being played on, but the base command structure is essentially the same.
The base syntax for the “game mode” command can be found below for each platform:
Minecraft: Java Edition
- /gamemode < gameMode>
- /gamemode < gameModeID.
Before using these commands, players must ensure that they have cheats enabled on their respective platforms or have operator privileges active for themselves on their server. Without these enabled, the commands will not process correctly in the chat window.
Once these have been enabled, however, inputting the commands is simple. For the argument < mode> or < gameMode> , players can insert the game mode they’d like to switch to, such as Creative, Adventure, Spectator, or Survival.
For < gameModeID> , Minecraft players can also input the number 0 for Survival Mode, 1 for Creative, and 2 for Adventure Mode.

Bear in mind that this will not affect the Minecraft world youve created before, only the new ones where you turned on the cheats.
Why Do I Want To Do This
When you create a new world you select your game mode. You can choose from creative, survival, and hardcore modes. Under normal circumstances this selection is fixed and a permanent flag is set within the world file.
Minecraft lends itself to creativity and changing playstyles, however, and you may find that the map you intended to make a creative map feels like it would be a perfect survival map or vice versa. Or perhaps you want to start in creative mode to build your home base and then switch to survival mode to take on the world from the comfort of your freshly built castle.
Whatever your motivation for changing the world type, its a pretty straight forward process. Lets look at two techniques, one temporary and one permanent, you can use to change game modes.
