Using Minecraft Color Codes

Minecraft Bedrock – How To Change Chat Text Color (Mobile/Xbox/PS4/Windows 10/Switch)

Minecraft will only recognize the color codes as such if the digit is preceded by the § symbol. Its an unusual symbol, to be sure, and not one that can easily be found on a standard keyboard. Heres how to type it out:

  • On a Windows US/UK English Keyboard: Alt + NUMPAD2, NUMPAD1
  • On a Windows ANSI Keyboard : Alt + NUMPAD0, NUMPAD1, NUMPAD6, NUMPAD7
  • On a Mac US English Keyboard: Option + 6 | Option + 5
  • On a MAC Keyboard : Option + 00a7
  • On a Linux with Compose Key activated: Compose, s, o

If you wish to copy-paste the character, you can do so on Bedrock Edition using the standard commands . However, do take note that some Minecraft text boxes cannot be pasted into .

Additional Formatting Codes Beyond Colors

Hiya. I was wondering what the type of code used for the server.properties file is for formatting codes, as I’m trying to figure out how to input characters such as the em dash and others into my multiplayer MOTD. Or, better yet, if you know how to do that specifically, even better. Thanks! —64.187.231.76 01:02, 5 September 2013

Can You Enter Custom Hex Codes

Why is that? Well, we need to take a look at how you would colour text in Java Edition, which uses JSON text.

Here is how you would colour those same two examples in Java Edition:

Now, notice the name for the colour green? Those are the colour names in the table! So in Java Edition, you give a colour by the name, not by code letter.

To type in a hex code, you can replace the colour name by the hex code, like this:

Now, in section sign formatting codes, there is only room for one letter to specify the parameter. How are you supposed to type an entire hex code?

With the current system, it wouldn’t be possible. But who knows, maybe someday there will be a system overhaul and this will be possible.

Currently, the article seems to use these symbols interchangeably. Can someone who’s familiar with it confirm which one is correct, or if both can be used equivalently in-game? — Orthotope 05:27, 26 June 2012

I think the guys who created this confused the two symbols. It should be the section sign . – Asterick6 20:55, 26 June 2012
You are correct, it should be the section sign. I just undid the changes of someone who changed the sections signs to ampersands, and changed the remaining ampersands to section signs as well. Hopefully whoever did that will leave it alone now. 83.87.133.123 16:34, 4 July 2012
I believe the reason some editors have made this mistake is because many bukkit servers run plugins that can change the “& ” to “§” without the user even knowing, making it very easy to become confused. — maxpowa 01:12, 15 July 2012

The section mark is correct, but the Ampersand is used in Bukkit. —10meisterbaelle 18:08, 1 April 2020
