A respawn anchor is an incredibly useful item in Minecraft that will set a respawn point for you in the Nether. This is useful, as the Nether is a treacherous place, so not having to travel all the way back to it where you die is great.

You can craft a Respawn Anchor by using nine blocks in your crafting table in the following layout.

Crying Obsidian
Crying Obsidian Crying Obsidian

You can get Crying Obsidian from a ruined portal. This is a damaged Nether Portal that will spawn on the map, in any biome, and can appear on the ground, underwater, or in caves. You can break off blocks of Crying Obsidian by using a Diamond Pickaxe.

To use the block, you will need to use it with glowing stone blocks to charge it. Each Glowstone block you use will give then anchor more charges, up to a maximum of 15 charges. Each time you respawn, a charge is consumed, and if you use all the charges, then the Respawn Anchor will be useless, and you will need to make another one.

Respawn Anchors need clear space around them to respawn the player, so a Respawn Anchor can become useless if buried or covered in lava. You can also find Respawn Anchors as you explore the nether, and they can only be harvested with a Diamon or Netherite Pickaxe.

How To Make Respawn Anchor In Minecraft 119

Players must collect three glowstone blocks and six obsidian blocks to make a respawn anchor. Both of these elements are indigenous to the Nether. After that, arrange them on a crafting table in the formation shown below.

  • Glowstone
  • Crying Obsidian

This is a light-emitting block found in branching structures in the Nether, hanging from ceilings and overhangs.

It is a luminous obsidian variant that can be used to make a respawn anchor and emits purple particles when placed. Only diamonds and netherite tools can be used to mine Crying Obsidian. It is relatively uncommon, as you would need to locate a Ruined Portal or a Bastion Remnant in the Nether. While the former is guaranteed to contain some Crying Obsidian, the latter is entirely dependent on chest drops.

Actually, you can obtain these ingredients for crafting a respawn anchor in the Overworld via a variety of means, including:How to craft respawn anchor in Minecraft

  • Glowstone can be obtained from trading with villagers or wandering traders, or crafted from glowstone dust dropped by witches.
  • Crying obsidian can be found in ruined portals or trading with piglins.

Set Respawn To The Anchor

It works the same way as a bed – players just need to click on the respawn anchor to set the location. However, it must have a charge at the time of the click. If successful, a confirmation message will appear. Multiple players can use the same anchor and each revival will cost one charge. If the charges are depleted, players will respawn at the world spawn point.

Similar to a bed, respawn anchors can also explode. If you try to use it in the overworld, the block will create a massive explosion with a level of 5, destroying surrounding blocks and creating fires.

Minecraft Respawn Anchor Explained

If you’re a Minecraft veteran, you’ll know that beds do not work in the Nether. In fact, they blow up if you try to use one. Introducing the Respawn Anchor. Mojang is trying to make the Nether more habitable for anyone embarking on lengthy Nether trips and as a result, you can use the Respawn Anchor to spawn at a set point in the Nether.

When you’ve got one , you need to charge it with Glowstone. One Glowstone block is equivalent to one respawn and you can add up to four blocks, meaning you can respawn four times before needing to replenish the Respawn Anchor. You do need to ensure the surrounding area is not obstructed however, otherwise you’ll see “You have no home bed or charged respawn anchor, or it was obstructed” when you die.

Interestingly, Hoglins will flee from Respawn Anchors, meaning you don’t run the risk of one being next to you when you respawn. Using a Respawn Anchor in the overworld will cause it to explode though, so don’t even test it out.

How To Craft A Minecraft Respawn Anchor

So, you want to make a Respawn Anchor? You’re going to need three Glowstone blocks and six Crying Obsidian. The recipe is pictured above three Crying Obsidian in the top row, three Glowstone in the middle row, with another three Crying Obsidian below it. But how do you get Crying Obsidian?

In essence, you need to find a Ruined Portal. This is one of the new structures in the game and can be found in either the Overworld or the Nether. You can read more about it on the Ruined Portal wiki page but essentially, they can spawn pretty much anywhere. They can be found in every biome in both dimensions and there’s also a 5% chance it’s a Giant Ruined Portal. They also always spawn with Netherrack at the base, even in the Overworld. You must have a Diamond Pickaxe to mine it, much like normal Obsidian.

There are a couple of other methods to obtain it though. Bastion Remnants, another new structure exclusive to the Nether, has a 12.2% chance of spawning a few pieces of Crying Obsidian in the chests. You’ll need to search an average of 8.2 chests to find it though, so it’s not too reliable.
