Changes In Bountiful Update

MINECRAFT – How to Make a Map Bigger! 1.15.2

As of Minecraft 1.8 the mapping system changed considerably. Overlapping maps are no longer possible to create at all. Each zoom level of maps has a grid that all maps now align to. The top left corner of each map now aligns to the coordinate +- *size. Where m and n are any integer numbers and size is the map size . The most notable change is that maps no longer zoom out from the center as in version 1.7 but snap to the grid.

Assuming one wants to make maps which cover the origin and surrounding area, 4 maps are required. Follow these steps:

  • Create 4 blank maps and put them into your inventory
  • Travel to coordinates initialize one map
  • Travel to coordinates initialize one map
  • Travel to coordinates initialize one map
  • Travel to coordinates initialize one map
  • Note: -50 and -80 are simply locations on either side of the -64 boundary.
  • Zoom these four maps out using the normal process
  • Regardless of the zoom level, maps generated from this initial set will always align properly.
  • This will create 4 perfectly aligned maps covering the origin with the least amount of traveling. The map numbers will cover the area clockwise from “top left” .

    How To Make A Map

Well, how to make it? To make a map is not difficult, we have to find and make the materials first, such as:

    • Sugar Canes
    • Compass

After you get the materials, all the time you make the map. For maps without pointers, you only need to place 9 papers on the manufacturing table while those that use pointers are only 8 papers and 1 compass.

We still cant use the map that you created earlier because it is still an empty map. For us to use it, you have to hold the blank map, and then the words for the map will appear, click on the text, then the blank map will automatically be filled with the terrain where we are and the map is already available.

Requirements For Crafting A Map In Minecraft

While you can find maps in treasure chests or buy them from a cartographer, it is best to just craft one yourself. To make a map in Java Edition, you will need a compass and 8 pieces of paper. Both items can be crafted by the raw materials you find around the world.

If you are playing Bedrock Edition, you can combine 9 pieces of paper into a basic map that doesn’t have location tracking. You can even start a game in bedrock with a map equipped by toggling on “Starting Map” in the World Preferences menu.

Now you have an “empty map,” which isn’t particularly helpful. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix.

Simply equip and “use” the map to instantly draw a picture of everything around you. The game will also now assign a number to the map so it won’t be called empty anymore.

As you walk around with the map up, more and more of your surroundings will be filled in. You can track yourself with the tiny white marker.

Of course, your “Minecraft” world is bigger than what’s shown on the map. Once you leave its range, either make a new map to keep tracking yourself, or zoom your original map out.

You can zoom out your map by combining it with eight more pieces of paper at a crafting table, or only one more piece of paper at a cartography table. This can be done up to four times, and each zoom level doubles the map’s current range.

    Using A Cartography Table

In some versions of Minecraft , you can also use a Cartography Table to create a map. First, create the table:

Once you’ve got that setup, just put in a single piece of paper into the bottom slot! That’s it, you’ve now created an Empty Map. Here’s some other stuff you can create:

    • Map + Paper = Expanded Cleared Map
    • Map + Empty Map = Cloned Map
    • Map + Glass Pane = Locked Map
    • Map + Compass = Locator Map
    • Empty Map + Compass = Empty Locator Map
    • Paper + Compass = Empty Locator Map

    What Are Explorer Maps

Explorer Maps are special types of maps which work differently to regular maps. Explorer Maps show an area where there is a rare structure type: either a Buried Treasure, a Woodland Mansion, or an Ocean Monument. The rare structure will always be marked somewhere on the map by an icon.

Explorer Maps cannot be crafted. To get one, you have to trade Emeralds and a Compass with a Cartography Villager .

Explorer Maps often show areas far away from the player, but you’ll always be able to see where you are in relation to the map by looking at the player marker. If you’re outside the boundaries of the map, your player marker will be small and appear somewhere on the map border. As you approach, the marker will get larger. Once you pass the map boundary, you’ll begin to explore and fill out the map, just like a normal map.

Upgrade The Map To Level 1

How To Make Your Map Bigger In Minecraft

To upgrade the size of you map, you need to upgrade your map from Level 0 to Level 1. To do this, add the Level 0 map and 8 more paper to the 3×3 crafting grid.

The newly crafted map will now be upgraded to a Level 1 map which is larger than the previous. When you open this map, it won’t be completely filled in.

You will need to travel around in the world to fill in the detail.

    How To Expand The Map

Did you know that you can expand your map up to four times? Each time you expand a map, you get a bigger map with more areas to fill as you explore the landscape.

To start from a Level 0 or a newly crafted and filled map, check out the process below:

  • Go to your crafting table and open the menu.
  • Place your current map in the middle box of the crafting grid.
  • Place eight pieces of paper in the empty boxes surrounding your map.

How To Make A Giant Map

Right click on a cartography table to open its UI. Here there are two squares on the left which are the inputs and the square on the right is the output.

The map name is only present in the Bedrock edition of Minecraft. You can rename the map to simplify what the maps purpose is. The cartography table can also make an existing map larger.

To make a larger map simply place an already opened map into one of the slots on the left and some paper in the slots as well. Clicking on the output will consume both items on the left and give you a more zoomed out map.

You can do this up to four times. If you would like to add a locator to the map so you can keep track of where the player is on the map you can do so at a cartography table. Add your existing map to the left slot and add a compass to it.

Now the map will show you where the player is on the map as well as where they are facing.

If you are playing on a multiplayer server, the map will also show you the locations of other players as long as they fit on the map. If they do not fit within the boundaries of the map, they will appear at the edges of the map with their own assigned color.

If you want to ensure no further changes to the map you have made you can do so at a cartographer table. Simply add the map you want to lock and add a glass pane to the slot on the left. Once a map is locked you cannot transform it into a locator map.

    Track Maps Relative Positions

It’s helpful to keep track of the relative positions of the maps. A useful method of displaying the map set is to craft 10 Item Frames and place them on a wall in a 3-by-3 square with the tenth atop or beside the square. Place the zoom-level 4 overview in the tenth item frame. Place the nine maps in their appropriate positions in the 3×3 square. A sign can be added which identifies the origin and perhaps the corner coordinates. You could also duplicate any of these which you wish to carry with you while fully exploring an area. Information added to one copy will be automatically updated to all other copies.

Set of maps in item frames before 1.8

In the illustration, the sign provides the map # of each of the maps shown. Map #127 is the center map. Map #185 is the map to the north, #189 to the right of that, and the numbering continues clockwise.

As another option, use a chest, and store the maps in slots in the chest that correspond with their in-world positions. If you use this trick, be careful to put them back in the right place once done with them.

You could also craft a Book & Quill in which you can write descriptions of what the map-set covers. This is a useful place to make notes of interesting spots found on those maps. That Book & Quill can be placed in an item frame next to the map set.

Another trick is to name maps on an anvil. You can name a map for its center or its position relative to other maps, i.e. at the origin of your mapping, one map east of the origin.
