What If You Dont Want To Host Your Server At Home

Hosting any kind of server from home means youre exposing your home network to the world.

If youd rather not take that risk, then you can use a hosting provider instead. Youll need to pay a monthly or annual fee, but you wont have to deal with the hassle of managing the server hardware.

A GoDaddy Virtual Private Server is a good fit if youre just getting started. Just keep in mind that youre sharing hardware with other users, so keep an eye on resource usage.

If you need a little more oomph and you want to hook up a lot of players, you might try a dedicated server instead.

Start Your Minecraft Server

java -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

To make sure everything is running correctly, stop your server with:

stop

Then edit the server.properties file and set:

enable-query=true

Save the server.properties file and restart your server. From there, enter your server IP address into the Minecraft Server Status Checker to see if its publicly accessible.

Writing A Script To Launch The Server

It’s definitely boring to have to remember the command-line options for your server every time you launch it. Luckily, we can write it down in a file and just run that instead.

On Windows

The windows version of a script is called a batch file. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.bat”, and then right click it to edit using notepad. Paste the following in:

Double click the file to start your server. You may get a “Class_Not_Found” and ServerGuiConcole error, just ignore these errorsand you should see your “Server Thread/INFO” dialog start the server.

The “pause” command is there to keep the window open so you can read what happened after the server stops.

On macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD

All these systems use a common scripting language called the “POSIX shell script” on the command line. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.sh” and write the following in:

#!/bin/shcd"$"exec java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar server.jar --nogui

Now save the file. Run chmod a+x start.sh to make it executable. You can now run the file by double-clicking or by running ./start.sh in the folder .

If you want to add a pausing part like the Windows example, remove the exec word, and add a line of read -n 1 -p “Waiting…” to the end. This is useful if you are running the script by double-clicking on the GUI.

Configuring The Minecraft Server

  • Configure the server by editing the server.properties file, the format for which is explained here. Be certain to edit the file with a text editor that does not add formatting , such as Windows Notepad. Additional configuration may not be necessary as many servers run fine from the default values.
  • To become or add an operator , type /op< targets> into the server console or gui. This adds the specified user’s username and UUID to the ops.json file. Operator status will not be changed if you change your username due to the use of UUID.
  • Administrators and operators may execute commands. In other words, operator privileges allow you to control certain aspects of the game .
  • ops.json contents:
  •

  • If your server.properties is configured to enable whitelist, you can add a user to the whitelist.json by typing /whitelist add < player> into the server console or gui. Due to the transition to the UUID system, it is not recommended to directly edit whitelist.json.
  • Run The Minecraft Bedrock Server

How to Setup Minecraft Server on Windows 10 (java)

Unlike a Java server, you dont have to install the Minecraft server before hosting it. So, once you have unzipped the server files, lets get started.

    On Ubuntu

Each Linux OS has its own terminalapp to run custom commands. Just make sure that your system is running at least Ubuntu 18 or equivalent. Then, use the following command to launch the server.

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server

If the command fails, try replacing the bedrock_server part of it with the unzipped folders name and then run it again. After successfully running the command, you can jump onto the server and start playing.

    On Windows

To make a Minecraft Bedrock server on Windows, you need to follow these steps:

    1. First, we need to exempt Minecraft from UWP loopback restrictions. It prevents the UWP apps from connecting to the local server. To do this, open the command prompt as an admin by right-clicking on it in the start menu or choosing the option directly from the sub-menu.

    2. Then, within the command prompt, paste the following command and hit enter.

    CheckNetIsolation.exe LoopbackExempt a p=S-1-15-2-1958404141-86561845-1752920682-3514627264-368642714-62675701-733520436

You can close the command prompt after executing the command.

    3. Next, open the unzipped server folder and double click or right-click and open the bedrock_server.exe file.

    5. Once the Firewall accepts the exception you made, the server will start running in the command prompt.

    Download The Minecraft Server Files

You can find the Minecraft server files on the official websites section. Its possible to retrieve older versions, as well, but not from the official website. If you want the latest developments, we recommend you always use the latest version from the official site.

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is. to download and start repairing.

Note that the server is a JAR file that wont work unless you have Java on your system.

Its worth mentioning that the JAR file will create various configuration files in the location you launch it. So, before you launch the server, make sure its in an appropriate location on your PC.

The best practice would be creating a dedicated folder wherever you feel like, moving the JAR file there, and launching it.

Can You Create A Free Server On Minecraft

If you wonder how to make a Minecraft server for free, there are a number of websites that provide free hosting for Minecraft however, these services often come with restrictions, such as a lack of support and the availability of paid add-ons.

Free Minecraft server hosting is an excellent choice if you are new to Minecraft servers or only want to play with a few friends online because most free server hosting has a maximum player restriction.

Before you join up for any free Minecraft server hosting, you should do some research to find out what type of customer care and extras, such DDoS protection and server backups, come with the hosting package.

    Minecrafts servers are all community-based

But the real reason why Minecraft thrived and still keeps at it is the community. As you probably know, Minecraft never had any official servers, everything was run by its community.

So there was no place where everything was readily available to you. You had to soldier on through tears and frustration to build the perfect world for you and your friends.

However, all of this couldnt be possible without servers, the backbone of every single Minecraft world ever built. With that in mind, lets see how you can build your own Minecraft server that your friends can join.

Since most of the servers are community-made, it would be a wise idea to protect your online privacy using a VPN. You can find a list of our best 5 VPNs for Minecraft on Windows and Mac.

Hard Disk Space And Broadband Requirements

Of course, you also need to store the Minecraft server installation as well as user and game world data on your server. The following approximate values can be used here:

    • 1 to 2 players: at least 2 gigabytes of free disk space
    • 3 to 5 players: at least 18 gigabytes of free disk space
    • 6 players or more: at least 35 gigabytes of free space

However, size is not the only factor you should pay attention to when it comes to storage units. Relying on SSD storage for your server can speed up the startup process. However, for a smooth gaming experience on a Minecraft server, classic HDD storage is perfectly suitable, too.

For more on the differences between the two major types of memory, see our article SSD vs. HDD: What are the differences?.

The required broadband capacities also result from the number of active players on the Minecraft server. In terms of memory, Minecraft isnt too demanding: Majongs recommendations from 5 Mbps for 1 to 2 players to 45 Mbps for 6 or more players – are not a problem if you rent the hardware and hosting for your Minecraft server. In case you have your own server at home, you will of course have to keep an eye on the key figures and order a larger broadband package if necessary.

We can all agree that Minecraft is an amazing game. It has come a long way since its initial release, and updates dont cease spawning. So whats the thing that makes Minecraft so great, even after so many years?

It might be that after a while, you get accustomed to thinking in squares. But no. Perhaps the fact that a rather simplistic survival game has evolved to the point where you can build fully-functional computers in it? Maybe.

Requirements To Make A Minecraft Server

To make a dedicated Minecraft Bedrock server, your system needs to fulfill the following official requirements:

    • Windows 10 version 1703 or later OR Ubuntu 18 or later
    • 64-bit Intel or AMD processor with 2 cores
    • 1 GB RAM

As Bedrock edition cant run Minecraft shaders, its server doesnt require much graphical power. So, as long as your GPU can handle the regular game, it can handle some extra players too. Additionally, focusing on the platforms, Minecraft only allows users on Ubuntu and Windows to host dedicated servers. Though, players on any device running Bedrock can join these servers.

    Operating Systems And Other Software

How To Join A Minecraft Server On Windows 10

To be able to create your own Minecraft server, youll need the Minecraft server software. The developer Mojang provides you with a free setup for this, which is only compatible with Minecraft: Java Edition. A current version of the Java Runtime Environment is also required.

Secondly, you will need an operating system to manage your server resources and install the Minecraft server software. In connection with the local home server, it has already been hinted that you can certainly get your own Minecraft world running on the standard user operating systems from Microsoft, such as Windows 10 or Windows 8. Installation on macOS is also possible, according to developer information. For an optimal setup, however, the classic server operating systems are recommended:

    • Windows Server 2019
    • Ubuntu
    • openSUSE

It is required that you are able to use Java via the command line. On macOS and Linux, this should be set up by default. In Windows, you often need to enable the option first via enable PATH environment variable.
