Why Do You Need To Migrate From Mojang To Microsoft Account

Minecraft has decided to pull the plug on legacy accounts for better protection in the form of overall account safety. Since the kind of account safety that Minecraft wants to achieve is not possible with legacy accounts, Minecraft has decided to make use of Microsoft accounts instead of building a new account login system from scratch.

The biggest added benefit to migrating your account is the option to enable two-factor authentication. We will roll out additional player safety features over time, Minecraft added.

For The Past Six Years Minecraft Players Have Been Able To Play Minecraft Without Having Any Microsoft Account As The Company Used To Hold The Ownership Of The Game

But now, in 2021, things will differ from that of the last few years. From 2021, Minecraft players will not play Minecraft if they wont have a Microsoft account, even if they have an original version of these enthralling game.

Previously, the game has existed in two separately developed versions: the Minecraft: Java Edition and the Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

Minecraft: Java edition used Mojang accounts, whereas Minecraft: Bedrock edition used Windows and Microsoft accounts. From the 2011 launch, the game has seen a huge surge in the number of players playing this game.

Now, after this recent change, the account will still be the same, and no crossplay will be provided, which means that you wont be able to play with your friends if they have different Minecraft versions.

    Minecraft Earth Microsoft Account

You may be a bit confused over whether you have to have a Minecraft Earth Microsoft account or not if the game isnt playable on a Microsoft-owned platform. Minecraft, Minecraft Earths bigger brother, though, is available on a number of platforms including Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. You need a Microsoft account on this console and mobile phone ports so you can cross-play with Minecraft players on PC, Xbox One, and other platforms too.

It might seem obvious, then, that youd need a Microsoft account in order to play Minecraft Earth. And youd be right. According to an official FAQ about the sandbox ARG, users will need to use their Microsoft account to play it. If you dont have one, you can register your own account here.

Thankfully, a Microsoft account is free to register and use. You wont have to fork over any cash to make one and, by extension, play it. The game is free-to-play, too, so you wont have to worry about using any cash if you just want to test it out to see if you like it.

Having a Microsoft account enables Minecraft Earth to track your progress, save your builds, and save your inventory, too. You dont have to start over from scratch every time you start it up, so theres nothing but benefits here.

Minecraft Java Edition Now Requires A Microsoft Account

It’s all about increasing security and ensuring all Minecraft games on PC are connected to the same account.

Mojang Studios, the game development studio that gave us Minecraft, has announced that going forward all of its games will require a Microsoft account to play. For now, that means anyone playing Minecraft Java Edition needs to start using a Microsoft account if they don’t already.

In a blog post, Mojang says it realizes change is inconvenient, especially when it potentially requires tens of millions of Minecraft Java Edition players to sign up for a Microsoft account. However, the the switch is apparently necessary and very important, mainly for security reasons.

As Mojang is owned by Microsoft, this announcement should come as no surprise to anyone. It’s also imperative that, even if you don’t want to make the change to a Microsoft account, you do so soon. Mojang makes it clear the switch in mandatory, and if you don’t do it, “in several months you wont be able to log in anymore which means you wont be able to play either.”

For instance, if you refuse to comply with this transformation, you can neither log in nor play Minecraft in the future. In the meantime, Minecraft will have detailed and clear instructions to share with players on how to migrate from Mojang to Microsoft account.

To enhance security and safety, Mojang, the makers of MineCraft, will require players to have a Microsoft account starting in early 2021. Correction: Microsoft was in touch this afternoon through a spokesperson to clarify that the movement of accounts is only for people who use the Java edition of MineCraft.

Minecraft Will Require A Microsoft Account From 2021 Onward

Minecraft users here? If you are using the Java version of Minecraft, then you will have to start using a Microsoft Account soon as Mojang announced this month that all versions of Minecraft will only work with Microsoft Accounts going forward.

Microsoft acquired Minecraft maker Mojang in 2014 for $2.5 billion. Up until now, users of the Minecraft Java version could use a Mojang account to access the game. Starting in 2021, that won’t be possible anymore as support for any account system other than Microsoft Account is dropped by Minecraft.

There are two main Minecraft versions: the Java edition and the so-called Bedrock edition . While accounts are migrated, cross-play between Java and Bedrock editions is still not supported after the migration.

Mojang cites security reasons and other benefits for enforcing the new account system on all Minecraft users. Microsoft Accounts do support additional security features such as two-factor authentication, something which Mojang accounts don’t. Other benefits mentioned in the announcement are that all Minecraft games — there are two currently Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons — are linked to the same account, improved parental controls, and chat and invitation blocking.

All users who have a Mojang account or a legacy Minecraft account from the years 2010 to 2012 will have to migrate to a Microsoft account to continue playing the Java edition of the game.

Migration consists of five easy steps according to Mojang:

    To Increase Account Security

Minecraft players will need a Microsoft account to play from early 2021.

As detailed in a blog post, Mojang accounts will need to be migrated to Microsoft, if they aren’t, then players will no longer be able to access Minecraft.

“Think of it as moving house when you outgrow one place, you move on to the next. It involves a logistic effort, but once youre settled in your new home, you realise youd do it ten times over just for that extra room,” said Mojang.

There are multiple reasons for the change, such as increased account security by utilising two-factor authentication. Moreover, there will be improved parental controls as well as the option to block chats and invitations.

Furthermore, all Minecraft games on PC will be linked to the same account.

    Moving forward

To help Minecraft players with the transition, Mojang Studios has set up a FAQ page to detail the steps in migrating accounts. Furthermore, the company will send emails and upload YouTube videos to also aid with the change.

This is not the first change that has been to Minecraft this year. Back in June, the sandbox title was moved to Microsoft’s Azure servers.

To date, Mojang’s game has sold 200 million copies worldwide.

Microsoft Says Starting Next Year All Minecraft Java Edition Users Will Have To Have A Microsoft Account To Play

To enhance security and safety, Mojang, the makers of MineCraft, will require players to have a Microsoft account starting in early 2021.

    | Topic: Microsoft

Correction: Microsoft was in touch this afternoon through a spokesperson to clarify that the movement of accounts is only for people who use the Java edition of MineCraft. There are different versions of MineCraft, and this new rule will only pertain to the Java version, Microsoft’s Xbox team said through a spokesperson.

The primary point of distinction is contained in the following item in the FAQ:

Who will have to migrate their Mojang account to a Microsoft account?

A: All players who use a Mojang account or a legacy Minecraft account to play Minecraft Java edition will need to migrate to a Microsoft account in order to continue playing Java edition.

Mojang, makers of the MineCraft video game, announced in a blog post that starting early next year, all users of the Java version of the game will have to get a Microsoft account in order to play.

For users of MineCraft Java edition, that means migrating off of their existing account with Mojang, the studio that was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 for $17.8 billion.

“Moving forward, all of our games will require a Microsoft account to play including Minecraft Java Edition,” reads a staff post on the MineCraft blog.

In a companion FAQ, Mojang stated that the shift is for the purpose of safety and security:

Minecraft Java Edition Will Require A Microsoft Account Starting Next Year

Mojang have decided that as of next year all of their games will require a Microsoft account to play, including Minecraft Java Edition. Don’t panic just yet, because while this does mean that you’ll need to log in with Microsoft to play the Java edition, it’s not being merged with the Windows 10 version of Minecraft. You’ll still be able to mod your game and use Java servers. Mojang simply say that one of the big reasons for the move is increasing account security.

So, early next year, Mojang will start instructing players on how to migrate their accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. They emphasise in their post that this is mandatory, and if you don’t make the transition, you won’t be able to log in and play at all.

It sounds kinda harsh, but it does seem to be for good reasons. Mojang immediately bust out the positives in reassurance, noting that Microsoft accounts will allow you to enable two-factor authentication, have access to better parental controls, and use chat and invitation blocking.

The account migration will mean all your Minecraft PC games will be linked under the same account, but importantly, they won’t be merging. Java will still be its own thing: you’ll still have your in-game Java username, mods, skins and the ability to play with your Java pals.

Six whole years after Microsoft acquired Mojang, Minecraft: Java Edition has remained distinct from the Windows 10 / Bedrock version. The former is still the best way to play Minecraft if you want to mod the game, and it’s still the only way to access pre-release ‘Snapshots’ . But things are finally about to change, with the announcement that come 2021, you’ll need a Microsoft account to play the Java Edition.

In its announcement, Mojang notes all the positive changes the new account system will usher in: two-factor authentication, chat and invitation blocking, and improved parental controls. Mojang also assures that all the benefits of Java won’t go away: mods and skins can still be created and used, and you’ll still be able to play with other Java version folk. That said, the account change won’t introduce online play between Java and Bedrock players.

Existing Java users will need to make the “mandatory” transition in early 2021. This will happen in batches, and once you’ve been transitioned you’ll receive a free cape. As for Java newcomers, starting some time this month they’ll be prompted to create a Microsoft account, rather than a Mojang one. The process doesn’t seem very complicated, and this FAQ addresses most aspects of the move.

Check out the announcement video below, which shows you what the free cape will look like.

Change Of The Username And Its Reason

Mojang also clears that you wont be asked to change the username while switching to Microsoft account. Still, if the username is used by someone else who uses the Microsoft account beforehand or if the username doesnt meet the Microsoft standards, Microsoft will ask you to change the username to reduce the risk.

Mojang claims that the additional security option was only offered to Microsoft, and thats why they took this decision rather than starting from scratch. But the question that strikes everyones mind is that if the security features were so much necessary in the first place, why did they take so long to arrive?
