Iron is the next tier of tools and weapons, specifically swords, in Minecraft after stone. It is relatively common, making it an adequate and preferred material for tools and weapons. Not only that, but iron is used in many crafting recipes later in-game. Without iron, you cannot progress to the next tiers. Here is a simple guide on how to find iron in Minecraft.
All New Ores In Minecraft 117
Here are all the new ores that have been added to the game in the latest Caves & Cliffs update:
1. Deepslate Ore
A new material called the Deepslate ore has been added to the game. Since the Deepslate ore is found in much deeper levels, they are a bit harder than other ores and they take a little longer to mine.
A Deepslate variant of all the existing and new ores in Minecraft 1.17 has been added. Hence you get a new variant of the ore for all the minerals. They are as follows:
- Deepslate Iron ore
- Deepslate Copper ore
2. Raw Copper
Copper is a completely new ore in Minecraft 1.17. It is used for a number of new recipes in the game such as the lightning rod and spyglass. So mining for copper gives you raw copper that can be further smelt to obtain copper ingots.
3. Raw Iron
Iron was available in Minecraft earlier as well, but there was no raw iron in it. Previously, on mining iron, players used to get iron ores as a block. But now you first get raw iron as a drop which can be further compressed to obtain compressed iron blocks or it can be smelt to obtain iron ingots.
4. Raw Gold
Just like iron, gold ore has always been available in Minecraft but the latest update brings the raw gold version which is what you get after mining gold. Smelting raw gold gives you gold ingots, whereas compressing it gives you compressed gold blocks. You can find gold easily in the Badlands biomes.
4. Amethyst Geode
Amethyst shards can be used to make spyglass and tinted glass.

Where To Find Copper In Minecraft
Copper is obtained by mining Copper Ore blocks. Each block of Copper Ore that you mine will drop 2 or 3 Raw Copper, which you can smelt into Copper Ingots in a Furnace.
Copper Ore blocks spawn in veins like Iron Ore, and they can spawn in any biome underground, no matter your Minecraft seed. Copper is most commonly found at Y-Level 47-48, but you can find them fairly frequently at pretty much any depth below sea level So don’t expect to have as much trouble finding Copper as you would finding Diamonds.
Copper Ore can also spawn in Deepslate at the bottom of the world, though this is rarer, and the block will become Deepslate Copper Ore. This will become more important when Deepslate becomes a larger part of world generation once the Minecraft 1.18 update releases. It can still be mined in the same way as regular Copper Ore blocks though.
Once you’ve found a vein of Copper Ore, you can mine each Copper block with any Pickaxe of Stone or higher quality. It’s a good idea to use a Fortune enchanted Pickaxe if you have one, as this will increase the amount of Raw Copper you get from each block.

How To Mine All The Ores In Minecraft
Just knowing where to find all the ores, or what to do with all of them isn’t enough to be a pro at mining. There are tips and tricks to maximize your hauls and fill entire storerooms with all kinds of ores and resources. Our guide to mining in Minecraft is considerably more in-depth if you need the full scoop, but we still have a few things up our sleeves in this guide.
First things first, your equipment. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A great pickaxe. Iron is the lowest grade pickaxe I would recommend since it’s easy to make, can mine every resource listed above in this guide, and has respectable speeds.
- Lots of torches. Most of the ores on this list are found underground, and the ones that can be found aboveground are still more numerous below the surface of the earth. Spoiler: caves are dark. Bring torches.
- Some wood. Wood is required for a lot of crafting, most notably including but not limited to, crafting tables, tools like pickaxes, and torches. All of this is necessary for mining, so it’s never a bad idea to have a stack of wood in your inventory.
I also highly suggest looking into getting the Fortune enchantment for your pickaxe. This fantastic enchantment can increase how much an ore block drops when it’s mined. You can get up to 4 diamonds with a single diamond ore block, for example. This is a late-game upgrade, but it’s incredibly useful to increase your yield and make mining much more efficient.

The latest Minecraft snapshot is here to reveal another round of changes coming in the Caves and Cliffs update. 21w14a makes a subtle, but important change: youll now get raw versions of iron, gold, and copper when you mine them. This will help prevent inventory clutter and make the bonus from the fortune enchantment more consistent from those ores.
Previously, iron, gold, and copper would all simply drop ore blocks when you mined them, but now youll get raw ore, just as with something like coal. You can smelt these raw ores just like the blocks, and you can still collect ore blocks by using silk touch, too.
This change is happening because of deepslate, the devs explain. Now that theres a different variant of stone as you dig deeper, there are also matching variants of all the ores. If ore mining had remained the same, youd be collecting two stacks of every ore type. This change means youll simply have a single stack of raw ore, to keep your inventory tidy.
This also means that fortune will now be much more consistent across all the ore types.

I’m aware of the otherquestions concerning efficient mining in minecraft, but they don’t tackle the maximum ores per hour that you can mine using a diamond pick and an iron pick.
So accounting for use of iron or diamond tools and the wear on the tools, what is the MAX end result per hour of each ore that you can achieve? I say max assuming that you spend 100% of your time breaking blocks with no running back and forth to bank chests. I’m interested in diamond, redstone, lapis, coal, gold, and iron, though the cobble you get back would be a nice bonus.

After some confusion over what I meant I think it’s important to clarify what I’m looking for.
There is the ore chart on the minecraft wiki that shows a roughly stable distribution of ore deposits between levels 12 and 16 on the game map. That’s a popular area to mine as you’re above most lava pools but still in the max average distribution range for diamonds.
Assuming you use the most efficient mining strategy for those six block levels to mine all ore blocks you see while mining, assuming a smooth average distribution of the ore, and assuming that there’s no dirt or gravel and only stone where those blocks would appear, what will be the end result of ore “profit” after tool use for both diamond tools and iron tools after one hour of mining, assuming you’re mining 100% of the time? If you prefer smoother numbers then 10 or even 100 hours is fine.

Where To Find All The Ores In Minecraft
There are a total of 8 different ores currently available in Minecraft, all with varying levels of rarity. These ores appear in veins of different sizes, and some of these ores can only be found in specific locations. Knowing where to look to find your ores and how to mine them efficiently is most of the battle.
Minecraft generates worlds by numbering each block, with the bottommost level of bedrock being labeled as block 0, and each subsequent block afterward raising that number by one. This includes bedrock, air, and basically everything in between. Knowing this, it becomes much easier to know where to go to find ores. Minecraft considers sea level to be at block 62, and clouds start generating at block 128. Most ores are found below sea level, and no ores will be found above cloud level.

Does anybody have any idea why Lapis, Emerald, And Nether Quartz have different textures than the rest of the ores? It seems weird they are … well, different.
